Oh yeah it's finally time for that huh, he's ranked Ms56 so I suspect he's gonna do really well, I'm gonna predict 6-1.

Didn’t look that far down the banzuke but I’m a little surprised they didn’t give him an added F you penalty of dropping him to Sd1. But yeah, unless he doesn’t want to do it anymore and half-asses it, even a rusty Komsubi level dude should be able to sleepwalk through the next tourney or two.

Yeah, I feel bad for the guys whose division he's been relegated to. Unless he didn't take training seriously during his suspension, he should blow through the lower divisions since his demotion wasn't because his body fell apart or he wasn't able to hang n the top division.

I’d pay good money for an Abi/Hokuseiho matchup this tournament or next.

Terunofuji steamrolling through jonidan/sandanme/makushita was really funny. I love thinking about some like 17 year old kid in jonidan who's only been wrestling for like a year looking across the shikiri-sen at loving Terunofuji.

Sumo really should have some sort of "spot protection" for top rikishi, like a hard limit on how far you can be relegated because of injury/inactivity if you're a makuuichi wrestler. Just let the dudes climb from high Makushita or low Juryo or whatever.

For most of them, it might be the only time they get to fight an Ozeki level dude so it might be the highlight of their career even knowing they’re going to get destroyed.

there used to be until fairly recently (early 00's) a stipulation that allowed a rikishi to miss one basho due to injury without losing rank. the NSK felt guys were abusing it too much and ended it but id kinda like to see that return.

In case of injury I do think it's better to have some sort of rank protection, I was being mostly tongue in cheek about the Abi thing and actually agree.

Maybe some sort of independent/central medical governing body to prevent you from just going the doctor that happens to be president of your fanclub or something so they can wink wink you an absence slip. I don't really watch any other punchsports so I don't know if the drive to compete despite injury is there absent a similar ranking system so not sure there are any parallels we can draw anywhere to solve for this.

I'm actually wondering if there are many cases where someone would have had a better career if they could take a couple or more of bashos off to recover from injury without fear of getting demoted to a non-salaried division, or where people got demoted to Makushita or whatever because they kept running into nagging injuries. Terunofuji kinda had that problem and then decided to just tank until he was fully recovered.

I imagine Kisenosato looking at all the leeway Kakuryu got and just being all "oh man, hindsight.."

Kise absolutely would have been given leeway if he had gone the surgery route. I think he got too in his head about being the first Japanese yokozuna in two generations. If he had taken like 4 basho off and then started gambarizing everyone would have just been delighted. It also doesn't help that up until his injury he was an iron man like Ikioi or Tamawashi. Up until his big injury he'd never missed a bout in 15 years. Having just made yokozuna and wanting to put on a show, plus whatever pride he must have had in his no-absence record probably made it impossible for him to consider sitting out.

Part of the leeway Kak is getting might be coming from hindsight from the old men thinking “drat, we really hosed up Kise, let’s not do that again...”

But I also agree with Kenning that Kise was more of a case of internalized pressure and expectations.

My boy Tochinoshin's there. Imagine where he'd be now if he could have gotten that knee fixed, rather than have it dog him for years.

By the way speaking of injured boys coming back, Tomokaze is expected to participate in the upcoming basho, at the rank of Jonidan 55 (that's the second lowest division, of 6).

Ugh, I hate that after promising, entertaining young guys like Tomokaze and Ura have to sit out for a year or two, they then also have to grind away for an additional year or two before they're even back in the same division. Hopefully Tomokaze's healthy and up for the challenge.
