My opinion is that the demographic we call "conservativism" or the right has been self-selecting for a mix of sociopathy and sadism for quite some time, and this demographic has learned that the civics-class language of "political belief" lets them bring that sociopathy & sadism anywhere they want, and have it treated with a level of respectability that looks surreal from the outside. People talk like Trump made the GOP into something it previously wasn't, but I remember the decades prior, when they were cloyingly suggesting that if it weren't for the MSM and/or liberal politicians, they'd be doing the stuff Trump just bluntly declares. The pre-Trump "conservatives" being the demo that gave us the Turner Diaries and Limbaugh reading lists of dead AIDS victims over a laugh track.
