All I want is a list of Cyberware but everywhere is melting down about the game being the very best game ever or the very worst game ever instead of a probably 7-8/10 game and I just want to know what metal bits I can put in my body argh

Almost done (all quests cleared but very last one) and man, I really dug this game. Janky as hell, fine, but I mostly avoided the glitches, and the story and action and characters and aesthetics were all amazing. I don't play a lot of games, certainly nothing as high end as this, and it's just very satisfying. Looking for my ~endgame fashion~ before I pull the trigger.

Just finished it and did the secret ending. Fit absolutely perfectly my conception of V. Sick of all the politics and uncertainty, going in and cutting the Gordian Knot, crippling Arasaka and taking mikoshi on my own terms. And then the last twist... I left my body behind. Let Johnny take it. I spent the entire game getting cybered up, fully investing in hacking and whatnot and generally going full netrunner. I actually got as far as lying in the well, telling Johnny I wanted my body back before getting up and sprinting into the light while he called on me to stop. The denoument scene was super nice, and reminded me that as I was getting Johnny's memories and mannerisms, he was getting mine too. The character in the final scene ended up as a weird sort of gestalt of our two personalities. Cyberpunk as gently caress. Loved it, loved it.

Easily one of my top games, ever.

Look man, I’d never fault anyone for being critical of this game. There is a lot to be critical of. I am often critical of it myself. But it has also spawned a staggering amount of just absolutely awful poo poo posting since day one, and it’s insufferable every time a wave of people who probably haven’t even played it or played it for an hour feel the need to pop into every CP2077 discussion on the forums, to dramatically doom post whenever they get the chance. I guess the thing I don’t understand is why some people seem so emotionally invested in hating it and telling everyone that likes it that they are dumb for enjoying a video game. It’s not insightful or funny or interesting, it’s just obnoxious.

Yep, I'm in this boat. I really liked the game (certainly my GOTY 2021, ha!) but I understand other people not digging it even if they get it running. There's an enormous amount of heart put into the game, and I think that despite whatever irreparable flaws the game has it's a game that has something to say and displays it in a very aesthetically pleasing package.

Axe-man posted:

I think a lot of that has to do with the kind of hard fact that even the "legends" of night city never really changed anything or made a real impact. AI like Alt is out of your league, and Johnny even with a nuke only managed to crack the shell of Alt's prison. The reality is that V is always small time, and even when he takes over afterlife, they still have to do the space job, because in the end, the only thing they really allowed is for the god emperor to not be born and allow arasoka's son plan to ruin the company by being a lovely leader come to fruition. To me this is why the arasoka ending is so crushing, cause it reveals that all the other endings, accomplished so every little other than freeing the engrams, which they didn't know what to do with anyway, it was just a way to monetize an old man's attempt to live forever.

That's why I love the give Johnny your body and go with Alt ending. I did the 'Johnny and V suicide mission' and loved it because it is a drat legendary way to go down - a SUCCESSFUL assault on Arasaka in which (as far as the world knows) you are totally unharmed at the end, lose none of your friends, and then Alt brings you beyond the Blackwall for an uncertain future. I asked her what it would be like and whether she'd just, like, absorb me and destroy me and she effectively said that she'd just bring me over and then it would be up to me to survive. She said she'd done so successfully because she was a hot-poo poo netrunner... and at that point, having penetrated one of the highest security facilities in the world and destroyed its defenders by basically staring at them and pointing at them until they went insane and killed themselves, I think my chances are pretty good.

Of all the endings, that's the one that made me feel like I made a big difference to the world.

edit: Also yeah re: length of the game, I was more than satisfied with the size of it. Hell, cutting half the busywork missions wouldn't have lost much, but like people have said before even those are basically mini little Deus Ex gameplay bites, and I'm totally cool with that.

Honestly, I really liked and empathized with V, but DLC with a new character would actually be pretty cool. Night City itself is the coolest character

Speaking of individually fun gameplay experiences, my most recent playthrough I got the hover legs from Fingers (before dumpstering him) and a decent smart shotgun, and running up to a whole group of baddies, jumping into the air, then hanging there and unerringly blasting them into piles of arms and legs is very satisfying.

I'm basically assuming there's going to be Perk rebalance down the line, whether by modding or officially, because yeah Commando is silly. It wouldn't kill them to just... remove half the perks? There's a chunk of them that really change the gameplay and are rad, and a lot of others that are like 'increase damage while holding a body'

edit: Speaking of mods I'm pretty psyched by the model swap ones. They're not cleanly done or anything but it really opens up character design options

On my first playthrough I told Johnny to gently caress right of at almost every opportunity, so when he wanted me to light a cig halfway through the game I of course didn't.

On my second I've been a lot more sympathetic to him. Now the option to light a cig doesn't even come up. V starts smoking all on her own. It's a nice little touch and suddenly it makes so much more sense that 3 out of 4 endings are just a variation of shooting up Arasaka HQ like a madman. It's not really V behind the wheel anymore at that point.

So interestingly I had a very different experience with the smoking: I was sympathetic and avoided smoking every time it came up as an option, even when he puts one in your/his mouth I just didn't light it. In the ending I gave up my body to him and when he gave the guitar to that kid he was like "hey don't smoke it's bad for you" which I thought was a cool touch.

Throwing knives are so strange because it's like... okay, it makes sense that you throw a knife and it's gone. That's sensible. But not being able to pick them up afterwards is really dumb. Hell, it should give you a simple crafting recipe for them (or you should have one by default) to make it a viable gameplay method. I still used them a lot because they're REALLY strong and they look cool, but it seems like with just a little more effort they could have been useful.

It's way funnier to kill them on purpose - Regina is like 'oof I wish you didn't kill them' and V is like 'sorry bro it was touch and go for a second there' after you machine gun them to prone and crush their heads with a hammer.

Very curious what her dialogue is if you kill all of them; I wonder if she picks up that it maybe wasn't an accident!

I still think the best ending is not romancing anyone, making friends with everyone, then going with Alt and leaving your body behind. I played as a netrunner and felt myself getting less and less attached to my body as I was able to affect more and more of the world as a hacker.

By the end, going into mikoshi and the revelation that you were ALREADY an Engram and that the original "you" was dead at that point anyhow, going the next step and joining some AI gestalt with Alt seemed like a sensible story beat. Johnny at that point was trying to convince me that he should go instead but I was like "body's yours man, live a good life"

Bittersweet, but I felt like V transcended the whole Night City trap while leaving things better than when they started. Even better there's probably no record of their impact on Arasaka despite the destruction of Mikoshi and the crippling of their operation in night city; it feels like an inversion of V's dreams, instead of ending up a legend and burning out, becoming a ghost that just fades away. I left the game feeling like it was a totally happy ending, very cyberpunky.
