When I right click on a large image file (200mb-2gb tiffs) it can take up to 20sec for the pop up menu to appear in windows explorer (win7). The files are on the network over 1G. I can't figure out whats causing it. I have thumbnails turned off. Left clicking on them does not cause any hourglass delays, only right click.

Go to where the physical hard drives are, and do the same operation. If during the 20second to pop up you hear the hard drives spinning up, it's because the heads were parked and there may be some aggressive power saving going on. 20seconds is a_lot though, so it is possible it could be something else (e.g. a program in your right click that is trying to ascertain file details).

Sounds like you might have a shell extension that's trying to do something with the file, that loads in the context menu. Use Autoruns to poke around and see what third party extensions are running.

They probably have the drives spinning down when they are idle.

Does anyone have any tips on making network drives maintain a connection? I have one setup on my WHS box that disconnects randomly, causing various automatic things to fail. I know UNC paths are vastly preferable, but I'd rather stick with the mapped drive for now.

TWo utility program questions: 1. I need some good personal organization software. Something that lets me keep track of a todo list, calender, etc... I'd prefer one that isn't super intrusive, and doesn't take up a ton of computer resources. I remember Rainlendar being the best one when I used it like 5 years ago. Does it still hold that title or are there better ones? 2. I haven't kept up with torrent programs in years, but I've heard utorrent has gotten pretty bloaty/awful these days. What is the new favorite?

Yeah, the 'bloat' concerns are a bit overstated. However, they announced a month ago that future versions will have ads, so DEFINITELY don't upgrade blindly. I'm still on uTorrent myself, but I do intend to check out Tixati at some point in the near future. I'm told it's got every number-crunchy and spergy management feature one may want, and nothing more. NihilCredo fucked around with this message at 02:53 on Sep 30, 2012 |

RTM has a really killer iPhone app. Pretty solid before the big recent update, super great after it. Would pay if they made me, I'm still not sure what upgrading to subscription would grant me that they didn't give me already in free.

I'm liking Deluge as my new lightweight Torrent client. Might not suit everyone's tastes, but it does everything I need it for. Question: Is there any way to make UAC ignore Java updates? It's seriously loving annoying and I can't think of a reason (for my purposes anyway) why I wouldn't want Java updates to just... happen. Especially on my parents computer for which I'm an admin.

It's not perfect and there's still a lot of manual work involved, but it gets the job done.

So somebody has been messing with my crap at work and even stole my headphone I left by accident. I want to find out who it is, I know it is non-prime (night) shift. My work computer has a webcam integrated in it. Is there any free motion detection webcam software? Basically start recording if it detects any motion. This rear end in a top hat messes with with my desk and my nearby coworkers all the time, items will be out of place etc and other small items get stolen. Plan is to lock the computer and have it running in the background.

Does anything in there look like it might be the culprit for right clicks in explorer taking so long on large files? The only thing is that I might not get the OK to turn off AV stuff. There's no way to profile the time each of these is taking is there?

On Windows 7 (x64), is there a way or program to let me watch USB data transfer activity similar to watching the network usage graph in Task Manager's Network tab? I would really like a way to know if/how much data is moving over a USB port when, say, iTunes syncs (just an example).

The solution was to disable some NVidia startup item that didn't offer any other functionality than cramming more stuff in the contextmenu that I never used anyway. As I don't know what checks are built into that functionality, very theoretically I could see that possibly being related to your problem. I don't see anything else that's obviously problematic in that list anyway. You could definitely try to disable one or both NVidia startup items. You'd have to look up which ones are essential for normal functionality these days though, because I don't remember and that stuff sometimes changes.

Is there any reason to regularly defrag a hard drive. Like, once a week? That seems excessive to me, but somebody asked me to schedule it on the computer I'm setting up for him to run weekly, and I'd like some feedback before I tell him that's insane.
