Can we stop pretending second-hand smoke is an issue when smoking is banned indoors everywhere? People used to sit in smoke-filled rooms for hours on end, breathing in stale smoke. That's gross, and pretty obviously bad for you. If you think somebody walking down the street past you with a cigarette is giving you cancer you're just a moron and/or hypochondriac (e: or someone who is looking for something to feel morally superior about). I bet you conspicuously cough when you see a smoker 30 feet downwind of you. If you live somewhere where smoking isn't banned indoors, sorry about that; I hope you can make it out of Eastern Europe someday. Guess we better ban cigarettes, then. After all, a parent's alcohol use has never harmed their children. Obviously smoking is bad for you and nobody should ever, ever do it (especially around kids), but the point about the stupidity and futility of prohibition stands. Sorry if it's stinky. People ITT are making the argument that because cigarettes are such a horrible burden on them as non-smokers, it's worth counteracting the CW on banning drugs. Their argument is as based in emotion as mine (which is pretty clearly highly emotional, as other smokers have stated above). Mellow Seas fucked around with this message at 03:20 on Feb 25, 2014 |

Don't a lot of devout Muslims invoke God in a shitton of sentences that a westerner never would? So a sentence like that could sound absurd translated, but if you appreciate the more idiomatic meaning, which is just kind of a general regular affirmation of God's existence and power, it could be pretty normal battlefield chatter. In fact, I would guess the intended meaning was little different from "God drat it, they shot down our rocket." It could also very easily be stdh.txt

"48÷2(9+3)" isn't 288 or 2, it's just loving bad notation. It is literally impossible to say what the "correct" answer is. It's like trying to deduce meaning from the sentence "I hat through potato". Once you start using parentheses you have to use them to FULLY clarify the meaning. You can't just stop halfway, arbitrarily decide one interpretation is correct and laugh at anyone who gets it "wrong". And, as was mentioned above, nobody doing math seriously would ever use a division sign. Your friend doesn't understand math. That's fine, most people don't. e: Basically the thing is, yeah, ok, the order of operations is "FOIL", factor, over, increase, less, (that was how I was taught it in 9th grade). So if you use the idea that multiplication "comes before" division, sure, it's 2. But multiplication and division are the SAME THING. 48÷24 is just 48*(1/24). The idea of division and multiplication or addition and subtraction being in any way different from each other is a shorthand that was made up to make learning rudimentary functions easier for children. Maybe it would be better to teach fractions and negative numbers before division or subtraction. Mellow Seas fucked around with this message at 00:29 on Aug 2, 2014 |

If you live in a civilized place then you can't legally make the federal minimum wage. You can still get paid poo poo, though. I don't accept that rioting/looting is always bad. Yes, it's morally wrong in the abstract, but so is killing, and almost nobody is about to condemn war veterans for committing that sin. Black people rioted throughout the 1960s, all across the country. It wasn't all nice church-going folks in their Sunday best peacefully marching and getting the dogs set on them, like MLK-quoting historical revisionists would like you to believe. Black people hosed some poo poo up. When they stopped, poo poo stopped getting better for them, and started getting worse. If these riots weren't going on nobody (except goons and social justice-minded people) would even be talking about the Brown shooting, and there would have been far less coverage of police brutality and murder that has occurred since it happened. When I hear "stop rioting", I hear "just shut up and pretend everything's fine; let the system keep going the way it is." Nobody is being injured, and property is replaceable. Black lives are not. "The system" has proven itself to be very, very good at ignoring and quelling peaceful protest. It doesn't really know what the gently caress to do right now, does it? That Gaffigan bit, as he performs it, is light hearted and implicitly self-deprecating. The message of it is "try not to judge people." I have no idea where they got a picture of Gaffigan looking angry, but I would guess that he was probably doing an angry "character" in a story, as personifying the thoughts of others with silly voices is like, his main schtick.
