A new content question:

Where do you get the key for Gough's door? I've been all the way to the end and didn't find it. I read it was in the building before the abyss, is that the building with the weird chain miniboss or the building before that one with all the monkeys? Also is it possible to get gough's armor?

It's in the building with all the monkey enemies, search around for a doorway you probably missed. Also I've read it's possible to get Gough's Armor by killing him.

I can't find it. Is this the building with the spell you cut from a rope and a red titanite chunk in a chest you have to jump to get?

Edit:  I checked my inventory and I had it all along whoops.

You dropped the tower kite shield you started with for the knight shield? This is why it was mentioned as a sign of a bad player, you replaced your starting shield with one that's inferior in every way.

Man serpent greatsword has good base damage and is imo the best strength weapon and it needs 24, go farm one if you've opened sen's. You could also go the easy way and buy a reinforced club from the undead merchant. Since you have such low faith divine weapons won't do a ton of damage anyway, but you'll be able to two-shot the skeletons with either.

The snake men drop a greatsword that requires 24 strength and it's one of the better strength weapons in the game. You can farm the two just inside the fortress, and it won't take long if you use a ring you can find in it.

1) It goes against all logic I thought this game adhered to that it turns out you can block his attacks completely to no ill effect but massive stamina drain

I don't know what logic you're talking about because this is how blocking works against everything if your shield/endurance is good enough.

(2) An orange message outside his room said "Weakness: Parrying". I figured it was trolling me into getting killed, but does it turn out that you can actually not only block his attacks, but parry them? The guy is wielding swords the size of a small house for pete's sake.

You can parry or partially parry almost every attack in the game, although there's no point in doing it unless you can riposte.

Sounds like the people you're having trouble summoning are the ones with the wrong ports. I have no problem being summoned but I've noticed that sometimes when the host tries to summon a second it can take like 4 tries.

I have a question about damage scaling. Right now I rushed the Zweihander, and am planning on getting my str/dex stats up to that level while also maxing out int (at the cost of vit/end, just because I don't need it as much anymore). My question is this:

Will my 50int sorcerer get more damage out of setup A or B?

A: +15 Zweihander, enchanted with crystal magic weapon and a badass catalyst,

or B: a +5 Enchanted Zweihander?

Alternatively, since it's still early, I thought about going with a dex/int build instead and using ricard's rapier. Same situation, is one setup better than the other?

With high stats, +15 and a buff will always be better than anything else. With 27 str, 10 dex, and 50 int, two handed the +5 enchanted will have 715(266/449) attack and the +15 with buff will have 844(528/316). The more you put into str and dex the more the regular weapon will outshine the enchanted one. That said the zweihander is a pretty crappy weapon for +15 because of its mediocre, split scaling, with those same stats a +15 man-serpent greatsword only does 7 less damage and swings way faster.

Probably the best way to go is to use an enchanted weapon for regular enemies and buff a +15 one for bosses.

TastyAvocado
Dec 9, 2009
Yeah ricard's rapier is only really good if you use it with a monstrous buff, preferably the upgraded darkmoon blade. In that case it does the highest dps in the game I suspect (I saw a video of a guy doing this on like NG+++ and hitting bosses for 6000+ per combo). I tried using it with the 15 int Oolacile catalyst/great magic weapon I like to go with but it wasn't very impressive.

Personally I like the man-serpent a lot because it's a monster even without the buff, and only needs 27 str to get the most out of the scaling if you're two handing it.

For your example, according to the wiki, +15 Murakumo is 282 physical damage. The +5 lightning Murakumo is 310 physical damage and 316 lightning. This means that if you have low enough dex that the 282+whatever is less than 310+316 then the lightning will do more damage (before resistances).

EthanSteele posted:

The nerf to lightning was, as far as I am aware, a nerf to the raw numbers and nothing else. Apparently the Claymore +5 lightning was 283+288 where as now it is 257+257. +15 Claymore is 257 physical damage with C scaling, so unless you have enough Strength and Dex to make up 257 lightning damage then the lightning Claymore does more damage than the +15 (before resistances).

You say this as if it matters, but how much damage something does before resistances doesn't matter at all. You can't look at just the numbers, pure damage type weapons will outdamage elemental weapons even if they have lower damage totals.

For example, against a royal giant in AL, a 535 damage lightning claymore hit for 176, and a murakamo with a just slightly lower 532 damage hit for a significantly higher 256. Even a 598 damage fire gargoyle halberd hits for less at 239. A BSS with only 377 damage hit for almost as much as the 535 damage claymore at 162.

As a 50 faith character (and not being very familiar with the dark souls upgrade system), I was wondering how this all applies to faith/occult weapons. Is a +15 claymore significantly better than a +5 occult or +10 divine one when i have 16 str and 50 faith?

No, with those stats the occult/divine weapon will be much better. The +15 weapons come ahead when you're using a good scaling weapon (which the claymore isn't) and have near 40 in the appropriate stat. For example a +15 man-serpent greatsword at 40 strength will be better than an occult/divine claymore at 50 faith.

If you don't mind the slow attack speed, it's the best ultra greatsword for a strength build, and it's arguably the best of the very slow weapons.

I wouldn't be too excited to see its strong attacks though since they're pretty much the worst in the game, the only competitors are the black knight sword/greatsword I'd say.

It's basically terrible. At 24 strength, 18 dex, 40 int and 40 faith it does an extremely underwhelming 571 split damage (sadly, the same damage the old lightning claymore did with a requirement of 16 str 10 dex). If you go up to level 150+ and have 40 in every stat it does ok damage but still less than the actually good choices that you could have by working by level 50.

Barudak posted:

It would be a good weapon if you could ever hope to get to around SL 200 ish which is where its scaling finally surpasses other options.

It doesn't even surpass them though, it's still not as good. At 40 in every stat the greatsword is at 658 split damage, but at only 40 str and 40 int, a man serpent greatsword with CMW blows it away at 816. Even with 99 in every stat it still does less!

Someone else with a stopwatch or somethign should do some testing, but I just compared the pc to the 360 version and I'm pretty sure they nerfed the grass crest shield's stamina regen. Whereas it used to be equivalent to grass/power within it now seems noticeably worse. I haven't seen anyone else mention this.

Edit: Also, if you take off the lingering dragoncrest ring after casting you do NOT gain its benefits.
