I think the one exception really is Tia. Granted, Maxim, Guy and Selan are the only ones who have that mysterious "practically came out of the womb swinging a sword" quality about them, but the other characters are exceptional in whatever field they're in.

Tia's just an ordinary girl who until recently ran an item shop and can use some magic.

It's not really explored very deeply, but I think a huge part of Tia's character is hidden in the fact she really is ludicrously out of her depth pretty much constantly.

The whole "phantom tree" thing makes a little more sense when you realize that when Japan uses the usual equivalent, it's typically to suggest something is of a mythical, unsurpassed quality as opposed to being spectral. Elusive, but in a more legendary sense. The phantom fish dialogue tries (and fails) to play around with that a bit, but then this just straight up seems weird until you realize it's meant to be the kind of tree they tell tales about, assumedly because its lumber is so perfect for shipbuilding.

Also, kid me never could comprehend why Torrents weren't water-elemental. Then again, kid me never realized that those gorems were made of mad, as opposed to being angry. I still have no idea what "La Fleshia" is supposed to actually be, however. Saying it out loud it finally clicked, and ow that is the worst romanization job of "rafflesia" ever.

Nope. Maxim gets plot-mandated stuff at the very end of the game that can't come with him into the Ancient Cave. Anything that he can wield, either Guy and Dekar can use, or Selan can use.

I've found that the only time you don't sell equipment is when it's starter equipment that you can't get anywhere else since you never know when you might need it for some crafting thing.

As for healing items: In most JRPGs, MP is a much more precious resource than HP, but you should also not be afraid of replenishing it if you need to, since most games nowdays are balanced with the idea that you burn through your restoratives consistently and don't do silly things like grind for levels or make life harder by not using any magic, ever.

Regarding the Iris reveal: God drat I never noticed how shamelessly the game forced this dungeon on you. Might as well have had big flashing neon letters in the mirror spelling out "THIS IS IMPORTANT" at the end there. Now on to the not-so-positive aspects of this game. The translation's spotty, of course, especially with the monster names, but that's to be expected for the era. If SNES games weren't getting the Woolsey treatment, many of them ended up sounding very dull or awkward when localized into English. It's hard to say that the game's a special case there, but coming from a modern perspective, it is still very distracting.

It doesn't help that Natsume were the ones who translated the game. They're kind of... historically bad, even up to the modern age. Utter flubs, untranslated lines, and introducing programming errors/glitches that weren't originally there (Submarine Shrine, anyone?) are/were par for the course for them even in the 3DS era. There's a reason the Harvest Moon fanbase all jumped ship once Natsume lost the localization rights to the Bokujo Monogatari series (even if they still use the 'Harvest Moon' name on their own original pieces of poo poo games now)

In other words, Lufia 2's handling was poo poo-tier even amongst :effort: SNES translations.
