This season won't live up to last season, but its not supposed to. It doesn't help that everyone wants another gothic cosmic horror (which was largely left up to the audience to interpret anyway) but instead we're getting a west coast potboiler. fyodor posted:i love all the nuance and subtlety of this show Season 1 was just as trashy, except with a Louisiana bayou flavor. edit: True Detective, and the writer Nic Pizzolatto are cheap and sleazy by nature. I didn't think Vaughn did a bad job, at least not bad enough that he stood out. The plot so far is garbage and has nothing that would invest a viewer like season 1 had. I think its going to suffer from having too many "main" characters.

I liked the first episode. Farrell's character seems compelling enough if human train wrecks are your thing. It's a pretty tall order to live up to season 1 and I don't expect this to but it still will probably be better than 99% of what's on TV.

The story and characters could end up being good we havent really seen enough to say for sure but im not liking the new director so far. Someone else mentioned it already but that weird action movie-esque shot at the end with the dead guy and 3 cop characters was loving silly and cheap feeling.

The cinematography of the last 20 minutes was pretty slick. When Vaughn and Farrell are in the bar, when CHP was barreling down the highway under the stars, and when all the characters are eyeing each other around the dead body. It doesn't have the punch of season 1 episode 1, but it also doesn't have McConaughey, Harrelson, and Fukunaga's admittedly stellar direction. It won't live up to season 1, and everyone will hate it for it.
