Heeey now. I never said anything about old people. I just think 80's movies seem to be more interesting than current movies. Even early 90's movies like Edward's Scissorhands are far more entertaining than current films.

There are thousands and thousands of old movies. Only a few hundred are regularly played on TV. The worst drek gets filtered out.

We got crabs? We got crabs!

Nightcrawler is a good example of how a well made movie about two cameramen who follows two common breaking-and-entering thieves can be a thousand percent more exciting than a lazy movie about a dozen superheroes throwing CGI monsters into crumbling buildings for two hours.

What I'm saying is that superhero movies are crap and never exciting, and the glut of superhero movies is killing cinema. If you support the Marvel movieverse you are filth and you should stop going to movies.

It's not just you. All new hollywood movies consistently suck balls, predictable storyline, boring characters, generally made for the masses who want things spoon fed to them and don't actually want to think. It really grinds my gears that they spend millions on special effects and graphics but have a story that a 10 year old could write (Avatar is perhaps the biggest example of this). There are still good movies made, just few and far between.

Back in the 80s/90s the ratio of poo poo:decent movies was a lot more favourable to the latter.

This is so true. They are all without fail utter abominations of films with zero imagination put into them. It's sad because a few well thought out Marvel films could have genuinely been good. Instead they churn them out of a factory and people lap them up.

I wish they had less budget because that forces more imagination. Why their Netflix stuff so far has proven to be a hundred times more fun to watch than just the CGI fest.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B66feInucFY

Also after seeing what Game of Thrones did with practical effects for their giants, I can honestly say the very best CGI monsters look like crap compared and for a fraction of the budget. And also I think the best Marvel movie was Winter Soldier largely because the CGI was a secondary thing there and as you say, actual creativity was being used.

The big problem right now they need to loving stop is the Badguy->McGuffin->Big City Fight formula. Again the only ones that didn't quite go that way was Winter Soldier and the first Iron Man.

ED: Superhero films are this generation's Western. It'll never die as a genre but in the 50s you couldn't change the channel without finding two on at the same time, pretty much.

Burton has abused his sthick so much he could release Scissorhands today, if it had not come out in the 90s, and people would probably consider it a piece of poo poo.

There were bad movies back then too but no one remembers them. With that said outside of horror movies sequels were fairly rare.

Good movies from more recent times: There Will Be Blood, Nightcrawler, It Follows, Killer Joe, the Jackass movies, Borat, etc.
