I'm thinking more along the lines of insurance companies getting a hold of data and charging more if you are going to be more susceptible to cancer, MS, etc. Or pharmaceutical companies targeting you with insulin ads because you are gonna get the beetus. Or as someone has already pointed out, passing along info to the police without a warrant. Most of the terms of service allow the company to keep the DNA on file, have lax cyber security, and don't disclose if they are passing it on to others. I wouldn't give a company like that my social security number, why would I give them my DNA?

Found a half sister on 23andme. Pretty great. Also, fun fact, in the 1980s doctors were actively discouraging parents from telling their kids they used donor sperm. My mom didn't listen though, preventing the trauma of me immediately discovering my dad wasnt who i thought he was on the internet

Or as someone has already pointed out, passing along info to the police without a warrant. It would be more beneficial to know those things than to not know those things collectively. If you care about insurance companies using data against you, trust me, they will do these with or without this information as much as they possibly can and this is is matter for regulation (which they at least try to do now) and not giving someone your dna on principle will literally do squat. Targeted ads are a possibility... but I dont care enough. If ads are more useful to me rather than random poo poo all the time, should I really be upset about this? Not to mention how very far fetched this is. And what is this about police? Lol, in what manner would that be used against you in a way that wouldn't already be used against you if you didnt give your dna to a genome sequencing company? Of course unless you mean getting away with actual crimes or some poo poo. The potential benefits far far outweigh the individual paranoia of targeted cat tail butt plug ads.

Yeah, it's just spit, but I often REALLY want to ask 23andMe how many kits they get back where someone filled the tube with some other bodily fluid. I'm sure some idiot has tried to bleed into it before. EDIT: Also, 0.2% is usually "noise," and 0.1% is basically always "noise."

I'm sure some idiot has tried to bleed into it before. I used to work at a competing company that didn't datamine your genome and the only thing that happened was someone getting mucus in there once in every few thousand kits. Eww. The company that makes those spit tubes makes 20$ a pop off them and is rolling in cash, so a lot of development is going into less expensive testing kits, but it turns out spit's pretty much the easiest non-invasive way to go, at least until there's some easy way to preserve cheek swap cells through UPS. The international tests were always funny because your DNA tube was probably in some dude's pocket as he drove a motorcycle between airports. FamilyTreeDNA's test kit is actually just a cheek swab. 23andMe has a cheek swab kit that they can send out upon request for special situations too. They refer to it as a no-spit kit, and it's for testing either the very young or the very old. Costs an additional $25 though. I got one to test my son, because he was like 5 months old at the time.

I'm curious of my ancestry, but idk about shelling 169 dollars for it. My parents are both Portuguese generations back so it might end up confirming what I already suspect, 99% percent Southern European or Iberian with maybe some surprise Jew, African or French thrown in.

I know there was supposed to be Sami there but Mongolian? Finn should be far higher. Dad's side is Siberian, Central Asian and Mongolian? I know his people, the Komi, are considered a Sami Ural tribe but I think this just lumps Komi into Siberian or Central Asian. So Asian Jew? Kinda knew that but was curious how deep it would go. Also surprised by the Mongolian on my mom's side or at least I think that is what I'm reading off the sites you guys listed. Far more Mongolian than I thought. Also far more Neanderthal than I will admit but I read that is normal for so much Asian and Mongolian. Also might be kicked out of the slavic thread now. Explains my constant dreams of pillaging and plundering on horseback. Also surprised I am 100% gypsy free. At least I can share this with family now. edit: now that I look over I swear this is some pro slav propaganda now as Mongolian and Finn are nothing alike despite the joke.
