What if there was a modern, properly computerised and networked (cybernetic as they call it) planned economy? Like, it would use a national level barcode tracking and stock checking system (computerised checkout tills) that would quickly read and predict and react, using artificial intelligence, to the network effect of aggregate individual wants? And the emergent properties of this network would cause everything to be picked up and moved about like an invisible person moving chess pieces.

It's a trope among some scifi authors (Kim Stanley Robinson, Iain M. Banks) that maybe a form of communism with modern networks could be Cool & Good. Otherwise I've seen very little said about it. At least it'd solve one of the main absurdities of capitalism in a technological society where the automation of menial things is, counter to all sense, a bad thing. (and thus our economic system wants us to be luddites). But maybe some band-aid like basic income would be more feasible.

If a networked AI with such capability existed it would be capitalist as gently caress. Tech needs money in the same way that humans need oxygen. The emergent behaviour would be worse than Wall St. in terms of concentrating wealth.

Well whoever owned the company who owned the patent to this machine would make a killing selling it to marketing and data aggregation companies, and a smaller fortune selling to retailers with large and numerous warehouses. The engineers who made it would receive a small bonus at the end of the year (if their stocks are vested).

I bet that some alien society that was already communist could make ppl be communist after a few generations of living in a perfect communist utopia. It'd take a whole lotta doin though, if you know what I mean. And the aliens would have to be sexy as hell.
