Diomedia | Takayuki Inagaki | Takayuki Inagaki | Comedy, Seinen, Slice of Life | Manga | Jul 6, 2018
This is a story of a nerdy bookworm girl on her way to school, and yes, that's the entire premise, as she's not getting to school any time soon. Taking her "usual" route to school, it becomes an increasingly unusual adventure, and all the more ridiculous as it carries on. It takes an unpleasant sentiment many can empathize with, the feeling of tardiness, and brings humor to it—making it a hilarious situation to look back upon.

I do like the design of the pink haired girl with the glasses, but otherwise the PVs don't really sell the show as anything standout. Didn't catch the mirai short though, maybe that does something special.

It's not super memorable since Cant already forgot I streamed it as filler on an off-week in idolw@tch, and I only remember the barest plot details of what happened in it. But there's room for TV expansion into more developed characters.

A bunch of half-baked first impressions and thoughts, feel free to skip and/or take with a grain of salt.

Aguu: no idea if it’ll be good or not, but intrigued at least.
Angolmois: Not my kind of subject matter, but the art style is clean, wouldn’t be surprised if it was halfway decent.
Asobi: Could be an interesting comedy, definitely has some Grade A faces in the PV trailer. Will keep an eye on it.
Back Street Girls: The premise is skeevy as heck, but I’m unaware as to the actual content of the show proper. Will probably wait to hear what others have to say about it first before checking it out, but I imagine it’ll probably keep that tone throughout.
Banana Fish: Apparently the manga is really well regarded? Looks interesting, will probably check it out.
Chio: While the production for this has been troubled, the PV looks really interesting, so I’ll likely check out an ep or two at least.
Chuukan: Something to put on my backlog until I get around to watching Kaiji s1 and 2 :v: But it’ll probably be fun for those with an itch for more Kaiji.
FLCL Progressive and Alternative: No idea if these will wind up being as good as the first season, but at the very least they’re still interesting and I’m definitely enjoying the ride so far.
Free!: Not for me.
Gintama: More Gintama!
Grand Blue: Another case where I’ve heard good things about the manga. Hopefully the anime can do it justice. Will keep an eye on what people have to say about it.
Hanebado!: Not sure how the CG will turn out, but this looks like it could have promise. Will check out an ep or two.
Happy Sugar Life: Dark subject matter can be tricky to handle, and I don’t really have confidence that this can handle it well.
harukana: looks pretty, could be fun. Might watch an ep or two.
cell at work: could be fun, will check out an ep at least.
high score girl: Novel idea at least, even if the execution doesn’t wind up being all that good. Might check out an ep or two.
hyakuren: looks to be painfully generic and uninspired isekai drivel.
Isekai Maou: Not expecting much out of this one either, and based on the premise and some key art, could be pretty creepy, but at least this one has an actual identity and the visuals are nice enough.
island: Premise has potential, but the PV and the visuals don’t look all that appealing to me. Will be listening to the general consensus on this one.
dropkick: Could by a bunch of fun, will check out an ep or two.
Kyoto: a new mystery anime, could be good depending on the source material. Will keep an eye on it.
Vermillion: Doesn’t interest me
Marvel: Really doesn’t interest me.
Muhyo: I’m surprised this is getting an anime all of a sudden. I don’t know if it’ll be as good as the manga, but worth keeping an eye on at least.
Ongaku Shojo: No strong opinions on It based on the PV or the description..
Will have to see an ep or two to tell if it’ll be fun or not. The Pink Haired girl with the glasses has a cool design, though.
Overlord III: Not a fan of Overlord, so I have nothing to really say about this. Many people will like it though.
Phantom: What if Persona 5 was about Vampires? Jokes aside, this could be fun, will listen to what people think about the first couple of eps.
Planet With: No idea what it’s really about, but Satoshi Mizukami is a great writer, and has been supposedly working on this project for over 4 years, so I have confidence in whatever he’s producing here.
Satsuriku: No clue if it’ll be good or not.
Senjuushi: Gunboys the Anime. A couple of cool designs in here, though I’m not expecting a substantial plot or anything.
Shichisei: Interesting premise, and I do like Lerche as a Studio….will check out an ep or two of this.
attack on titian s3: see Overlord III
Shinya!: Another classic revival! Will this one be good? Who knows! Will check out an episode or two at least, since I like the artstyle.
shoujo kageki: A new idol/musical anime, though this one looks to have staged fight choreography integrated into the musical numbers, which gives it a unique edge. The show also has a good sense of style, especially with the flourishes like the sparkles off of the capes. Will check out an ep or two for sure.
Sunoharasou: This looks like bland fanservice at best, creepy fanservice at worst. Will avoid.
Sirus: This looks like it’ll be a solid action series, though I probably won’t watch it myself :sweatdrop:
Tsukumogami: Interesting premise, no idea if it’ll be good or not. Will hear what others think before checking it out.
Yume Oukoku: This doesn’t look very well produced…and the character designs are rather bland too :sigh:
Yuragi-sou: Classic Xebec fanservice anime. Will this be good? I don’t know!
Zoids: Not interested.
Ani ni Tsukeru 2: Hoping this is just as good as season 1, was a real surprise when it came out last year. I think only me and Davincie watched it…
Yama no Susume season 3: Will be one of the best anime of the season, undoubtedly.

The premise didn't sell me on it, but I'm glad I checked out the PV. There are a ton of great faces and unusual humor present here, and i wouldn't be surprised if it winds up being a top notch comedy.

As always, thank you for the quality OP!

Not much this season sounds interesting. Will keep going with MHA and probably check out the FLCLs, PA Works vampire thing, and Grand Blue. (I don't think that last one will translate well from manga to anime, but I hope I'm wrong.)

The manga is super trashy, so don't expect it to be handled with too much sensitivity, at any rate. It's one of those stories about a bunch of hosed up people doing hosed up things to each other where the main appeal is seeing just how far things can escalate before everything blows up spectacularly.

Back Street Girls: It's idols, but with the minds of middle-aged Yakuza dudes who can not handle the rigors of being cute idols or having to act like young girls in public.

The operation is used mostly for sight gags, like them having their original faces when their souls die a little.

Chio-chan: Chock full of videogame references (even references PUBG), absurdity, and most of the cast being complete, selfish assholes. Not an exaggeration. Nearly every named character is a trash person, and it's great.

Dropkick: Hyper-violent (to Jashin) comedy, with some slice of life. Jashin is also an rear end in a top hat and tends to bring the violence upon herself.

A lot of maybes this time, and not a lot of must-watches.

  • I've read Chio-chan and Grand Blue, and both seem like the sort of mangas that would benefit from a good anime adaptation.
  • I also read Happy Sugar Life a long time ago, but I've forgotten most of it. I think I remember liking it though, so I'll at least check it out.
  • Back Street Girls has a really dumb but potentially entertaining concept. Then again, Magical Girl Ore did a similar thing, and it sucked.
  • For sport shows, Hanebado! and Harukana Receive both look promising. Harukana Receive has the better character design though.
  • Asobi Asobase is a complete wildcard, I marked it as a "maybe" based solely on the faces in the PV. Art doesn't look great, faces aside.
  • Another wildcard, Shoujo Kageki looks like a pretty good idol-esque SOL show. The concept for the shows is interesting, if nothing else.
  • I never watched the original FLCL, but the trailers for the new seasons made me think that maybe I should, and then watch the new season?
  • The same goes for Yama no Susume and (somewhat begrudgingly) Attack on Titan.
  • On the OVA side, the BB&B OVA is a day one watch.

I only got around to it a year or so back, and it's well worth checking out, especially if you can go in mostly blind to embrace the madness.

It's an OVA from the glory days of OVAs, six episodes of creative animation with a great soundtrack. Not everyone's speed, but it's a fast watch, especially once it gets moving.

So it really is Planet "With", not "Wish" huh...

Anyway a few chapters of its manga have come out ahead of the anime, and so far they are very good with good dosages of Mizukami's comedic timing and impactful action. Remains to be seen obviously if it will be on the level of Spirit Circle or Biscuit Hammer by the end but I'm very positive on it so far.

...and also it's the only series of that list that really stands out for me :( The new Hosoda movie and the Non Non Biyori movie are in the mix but obviously their Blu-ray releases are an eternity away.

Was that being debated? Just curious since the katakana readings for the two are completely different.

I haven't checked out the manga yet but I want this to do well and be great just so it might lead to a Biscuit Hammer anime one day.

Yeah, it and Hugtto and other longrunners usually don't get mentioned in the continuing series section since it'd require me to do even more research. Speaking of which, you guys and gals should probably check out Hugtto Precure, it's been consistently amazing and one of the best animes of the year so far-it just has so much heart and sincerity put into it and its themes and messages that a lot of other shows can't compare to.

oh poo poo i missed that one in the list

i am looking forward to Grand Blue very much, one of the best parts of the manga is the comedic timing and highly detailed reactions ("titan face"), so i desperately hope they don't gently caress up either of those two things since the PV seemed to wash out some of the detailing. manga example:

Disagree; after just a few chapters of Chio I knew a ton of value could be added by adding motion, and knowing an anime was coming I just stopped reading. I mean it's effectively the entire premise of the comedy. The huge red flag is the production and execution. The source material is strong enough even with static images, and given a dash more confidence in competence this should have been a slam dunk adaptation, yet all expectations are tempered.
