Shifty Pony posted:The compressor in the photo is seized and will not turn. When the clutch engaged something had to give and it looks like the clutch started slipping and making huge amounts of heat from friction. I am pretty impressed that the belt didn't slip. The person probably would have stopped driving it or at least turned off the ac if it had because belt slipping noises are just plain awful. I had something similar happen on an 88 Accord, except it gave a whole lot of smoke for about 30 seconds (and had zero power at all), then the compressor fuse popped. Anytime I sneezed in the general direction of the climate control panel it'd pop the fuse from then on (which also took out the fan and all HVAC controls), until I snipped the wire to the clutch. I'm loving amazed the clutch in that photo didn't do the same.

Seat Safety Switch posted:Yeah, if you're out walking here and it's below -10 you can A. hear Fords approaching from a mile away because their power steering is howling and B. hear any car that's over 5 years old because the belt is making the sound of a baby seal getting stabbed in the eye. Ford power steering pump whine is the first car noise that car guys learn to identify. It's like a babies bottle.

It reminds of my uncle when he'd come visit. He drove an 80's something f250 and your could hear the whine from blocks away. When he crashed the truck and got a Grenada, nothing changed.

That sounds awfully loud to be it. Is it bad that because I've been driving my Ranger so much, I got so used to PS pump whine that when I fired up my GMC it took me 30 seconds to remember that on a Chevy, the same sound means the fluid is low?

My '01 F250 has it a bit, but you usually can't hear it over the 7.3 unless you turn the wheel while stationary or hit the brakes hard I want to flush the whole hydroboost system but that project is waiting for some future date.

I asked, "So, how'd she take it when you told her she needed a new engine?" "Oh, not well. Not well at all "
