Nate RFB posted:Dogi is in Celceta, albeit only a cameo during one of Adol's memories. He mentions he has to run off somewhere and will meet back up with Adol in a bit. Hmm, you're right, I just went back and watched them, he also mentions them escorting Doctor Flair from Ys1/2. The connection is alot more tenuous than in the original games though, and the other stuff I mentioned is way more questionable than the Dogi thing. Of note also is that Napishtim and Celceta both have some foreshadowing to what the Ys V remake might entail. That game is about the origin of alchemical magic and the darklings from Celceta and Napishtim have alchemical fairies.

Sol Galba isn't really a lesser Galbalan, the game just called him "the white Galbalan" in his subtitle. edit: Plus if you play the games in timeline order than you have a game where the name Galbalan is thrown in your face as if its a known element, then you get to Oath and they treat Galbalan like this unique entity that you've never encountered before. I suppose this is just ripples from the Napishtim retcons though, and I might be overthinking it. Falcom just does a really cool job of connecting everything and I'm trying to make sense of it in my head. Zaggitz fucked around with this message at 02:49 on Aug 12, 2014 |

Origins if you haven't played it yet. Otherwise, if your only option is PC, Oath, and if you have a Vita, Memories of Celceta then Oath.

Man I don't care how Adol feels about it. Stop making me out to be this weird ultra nerd. I just got confused about the game that takes place before the original Galbalan having a bunch of goddamn Galbalans in it. It's an inconsistent retcon, damnit. But whatever I'm done talking about this. Especially since Toddy was tweeting about me like 3 hours before calling me out on here, which is extremely creepy and weird.

So I'm a couple of hours into TitS, and if I already thing Joshua is a passive aggressive rear end, is the rest of this game going to be painful? Edit: Played a little more, and not only does he seem to be unable to have a conversation with Estelle without demeaning her, but we watched him try to slaughter those defenseless cat things just loving because. Despite this, we've had an NPC go on about how nice he is and the protagonist tell him to stop saying he's a heartless dick because she knows it's not true after living with him for five years. Maybe they shouldn't have skipped the entire time period in which he did anything nice if they wanted anyone to like him. This game isn't for me, is it? You can't tell the difference between light-hearted teasing and being an rear end in a top hat? I'd say that the first few hours show Estelle at her most dumb/ditzy, and Joshua at his most grumpy. It does gets better. Honestly, Estelle can be more than a little grating in that early section, so I don't blame Joshua for his exasperation. It was done to tell the player all the important things in the world that they need to know, and they decided to do it by giving Estelle a sieve-brain. Joshua isn't wrong that when it comes to monsters, the Bracer's job is usually to exterminate them. You seem to have missed the point of the "exterminate the critters" scene, which is that Joshua recognizes that he sometimes lacks compassion in his pursuit of a purely practical solution. It wasn't about "wow, Joshua is a total rear end in a top hat". Stabbey_the_Clown fucked around with this message at 04:48 on Aug 13, 2014 |

Play about an hour and a half of Celceta last night, which I assume is also a lot like Ys Seven? I was okay with the more formal RPG elements like the full switchable party, spammable skills, and quest system; they made this game feel a lot like one of Namco's Tales Of games without the obnoxious JRPG issue of having to stop progress in a field to load up a battle. I really miss the minor platforming elements from Origin and Felghana, though. e: dodge rolling everywhere is the best mode of transportation. Man, as much as I liked TitS, I never found that people became more tolerable. By the end of the game, I had the following list of people who I wanted to punch in the face for being jerks: 1) Everyone except Tita People are just constantly such condescending assholes to Estelle, despite the fact that she meets every challenge thrown at her. Josette, Kloe and Tita (all girls, probably not coincidentally) are about the only people that actually respect Estelle, rather than being 'impressed that the klutzy airhead didn't screw it up', or however all the mentor figures said it. Obviously it wasn't that bad all the time, but that's the overarching theme I remember. I'm still going to buy SC the day it comes out, I just wish the writing were less obnoxious. Also (endgame spoiler) less pseudo-incest.

To be fair, Estelle usually gives as good as she gets. I remember that the most often occurance of her being insulted ends with her insulting the person who did so.

Seriously, I just don't get it. Estelle gets some poo poo for being kind of a dumbass, but, well, she is kind of a dumbass, and it's not like literally every conversation is about that. The only one who's seriously mean-spirited about it is Agate, and Agate is an rear end in a top hat that basically nobody takes seriously.

It's anime, don't expect too much from the characters. Just enjoy the grind. Carpe Fulgar Translations, goons of Recettear and Fortune Summoners fame, are helping with the translation of SC so the dialogue will have to be better through creative liberties if nothing else. I am getting less crashes now since I turned the resolution up and turned HD fonts back on. Maybe it's just luck. Luckily the things that cause it to crash for me always happen right after it does an autosave on page 0 of the save files. Useful!

Also Olivier has such an op orbment line. It didn't hit me how good it was until I was trying to get a decent setup on Kloe, who has 3 water locks as opposed to 1 mirage lock. And then you have stuff like Zane who had more spells than my dedicated casters because of the stats spread I gave him but they were all the really lovely low tier ones.

Well, there is a significant amount of creepiness associated with hitting on step-siblings full stop from a societal perspective, in-built biological drives aside. Yeah there is no actual incest involved but there is a significant squick reaction invoked in many people. In a similar way that relationships/marriages between cousins invoke that same reaction in certain places but are seen as perfectly acceptable in others. I just looked this up on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin_marriage) and marrying first cousins is allowed in most of the world with the US (where is depends on state laws it seems) and China being the notable exceptions. They are still drat uncommon overall though. Anyway, for me Tales in the Sky was mostly full of heartwarming and it is kinda disconcerting how other people read so much meanness into it. Stop making me see my nice and fuzzy fantasy world in a grim light.

Funnily enough, the creepiness has to be reserved for everyone BUT Estelle and Joshua who keeps pairing them up. Eventually I decided that the only one who was fooled was Estelle herself. I was also a bit uncertain about the apparent Estelle-Joshua romance angle at first myself, but I think the game handled it pretty well. It's not an instant thing, there's a fairly slow buildup, with doubt, uncertainty, and self-examination.
