While the Buu saga is my favorite, thanks to the titular villain, it really suffers from the post Freeza single antagonist setup, meaning that there is just a single villain for out heroes to fight. Without any henchman, really nobody but the main hero (read Goku) gets everything to do. I mean , let's not kid ourselves, with shounen it always comes down to main baddie vs main hero, but if said baddie has at least a couple of henchman, the rest of the cast gets something to do besides sideline cheering.

Lumberjack Bonanza posted:It's still not worse than Goku. "Well looking back, I probably could have beaten Buu when I first fought him in Super Saiyan 3, but I wanted to give you all a turn!" To be fair, he never saw or felt Buu while angry (when his eyes open and steam comes out). He just saw the fat, goofy one. When angry, Fat Buu was probably somewhere near Super or something since he easily handled anyone around him (normally, he just let himself be beaten up or danced around and stuff); Super was basically him just always angry. In other words, Goku's opinion was hugely non-knowledgable in the Buu saga because he was KOed when the most important stuff happened, and didn't even know how SSJ3 worked.

On the other hand, this poo poo was so serious the god of gods was begging for help and Buu had already taken out cities. Hell, he even convinces Buu to slip off the leash and go do what he wants. Yeah, he wasn't really that informed, but it was more his inherent Goku-ness that lead to horrible decision making.

Fat Buu was just Super Buu without being childish, goofy and honestly fairly docile.

Did Goku say something different in the anime or is there another spot where he says he could have won? In the Viz Manga(which had some weird localization) after Goku returns to the tower after showing off SSJ3, Piccolo asks Goku "Couldn't you have beaten Boo if you'd fought with all you had at Level 3? Why didn't you?" To which Goku responds "I dunno, Boo's mighty strong...I don't think I could've", before going into the spiel about the the kids being the ones to have a try.

In retrospect, I can't say I ever really liked Goku. I just never really could get into the guy's mindset compared to everyone around him. (Even Vegeta, who is an archetype I'm usually not fond of.) I think I like the Buu saga the least not because it's silly but because a big chunk of it is spent on Goku and Mini-Goku.

Goku isn't very likeable through a lot of DBZ, but he's a lot better in Dragonball.

At the end of the anime, when they're fighting Kid Buu, Goku admits he totally could have handled this the first time he fought him, but now they might be hosed.

It's Vegetto. Vegeta + Kakarotto. Vegeta has precedent in the body and thus would refer to his counterpart by his "real" name that he's used to calling him. Esroc fucked around with this message at 02:39 on Sep 17, 2014 |
