lovely players go to Syracuse and get drafted in the lottery so of course they will continue to go there. Hell, Fab Melo got drafted in the first even though everyone knew he'd be a bust. Hell, Boston knew he'd be a bust but they figured they had two first rounders so what the hell. Syracuse magic.

dokmo posted:Are we still talking about Drummond? The whole point is that he's totally raw, and forcing him this late in his career to pick up skills that are largely ineffective against today's NBA defenses is mind boggling. This isn't 2003 and nobody posts up anymore because it's hard to score on those plays even for seasoned post scorers. This is 2014, a pick and roll league, and here's a player who raw skills fit pick and rolls perfectly. I think good post play is still valuable if the refs aren't swallowing their whistles. But yeah if you have someone who doesn't already have some moves that can be incorporated in their post game then it's going to be very difficult for them to pick it up. And to answer Libertine, it's not that players can't have both of these skills. Pau Gasol very good post player and a very good screen/pick and roll player. The reasons why a lot of guys only have one of these skills is because one of them is really easy to learn. Anyone who can stand and walk and do a layup can learn the pick and roll in five or ten minutes. And if that person happens to be able stand, walk really fast, jump really loving high with lots of power and not only hit a layup but dunk, you have a guy who is an offensive monster in any basketball system. You need much more offensive refinement to learn a post game. It requires some shots you're really good at making, some countermoves for those shots you're also good at making, good footwork, smart passing and the ability to absorb a lot of punishment.

Post play is really, really tricky. You gotta be seriously basketball smart to be good at it. My #hotsportstake on Dwight is that he's a giant idiot and isn't smart enough to play well in the post.

Wasntt here a story about Dwight where he stalked some porn star to her house and when she told him to leave he pulled his dick out?

A couple of weeks ago I was asking about Schröder's lack of playing time in Atlanta, and now he's played himself into the rotation and there's a Lowe piece up on Grantland. http://grantland.com/the-triangle/could-dennis-schroder-evolve-into-atlantas-answer/

He sent a bunch of bible verses trying to Save Mary Carey from a sinful life of porn then he showed up at her boyfriends house, pulled her into the bathroom, and whipped out his dick. she refused his advances because she was dating N Sync's Chris Kirkpatrick and he was in the next room.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ lol found it “Dwight’s a cool guy. For a month, we like talked on the phone, and he was always trying to give me prayers to get me out of porn and give me Bible verses to read. So then, I was going to go visit him when I was in Orlando, but I went over to this other guy’s house instead, Chris Kirkpatrick from N’Sync. And then Dwight started calling, and calling, and calling me, because he knew I was with Chris Kirkpatrick, so eventually at 3 in the morning, Chris was like don’t answer Dwight’s calls. “I get a text from Dwight at 3 in the morning — I’m outside Chris’s house. I’m like oh my god, what do I do? I was like, I got Dwight here and I got Chris in the other room and I’m talking to them back and forth. So finally I had to just pull Dwight in the bathroom and tell him he needs to go home. I was like I’m really sorry, I really like you, but this isn’t the time or place. When I pull him in the bathroom, he pulls his pants down, I was like, whoa. Yeah, and so I ran and started screaming.”

dokmo posted:It's insane to take an awesome pick and roll threat like Drummond, who is unstoppable going downhill, and force him to grind it out against defenses that don't need to double the post anymore, particularly since he has never posted anyone up before, much less NBA sized defenders. I really think it's stealth tanking. Maybe Van Gundy is going senile. Drummond had a jump hook that worked really well for those cases when he was close but couldn't dunk. I don't know, it's awfully strange and counterproductive. On a positive note, Greg Monroe is going to the bench, and the three big lineup may be dead. And Smith is back to power forward. Greg Monroe Drummond lineups have been a lot more productive than Smith Drummond lineups, but I'll take it. Dejan Bimble fucked around with this message at 21:46 on Dec 5, 2014 |

Thanks to a link from that Zach Lowe article I recognize that Cole Aldrich, Samuel Dalembert, and Amar'e Stoudemire are indeed the best rim-protecting big man rotation in the league http://stats.nba.com/tracking/#!/team/defense/?sort=FGP_DEFEND_RIM&dir=-1 numbers may be boosted somewhat by uncontrollable fouling and teams not needing to make too many shots at the rim when they're getting open looks at three and easy offensive rebounds all night but still (3rd in the league in getting-drained-on-from-three, 5th in the league in allowing o-rebounds)

EvanTH posted:If Bizort is around can he tell me how Summer League God Kyle O'Quinn has been looking since return? He was ejected Flagrant 2 for a clean block on a lame dunk and I didn't get to see him play no more. Fined $15,000 for it I believe O'Quinn is kind of a hidden gem at this point. He has a decent enough jumper for a big, very good passer for his size, great rebounder, can block a shot or two. His biggest knock is that he's not very athletic but he's a smart player and very willing to work so I see him having a 10 year career easily. He'd be the starter if Vucevic wasn't playing like an all-star. So far this year he's had some really nice games since coming back and he's begun playing crunch time minutes. I'm legitimately worried that his secret might get out and some team will throw their full MLE at him and Orlando loses him. That flagrant 2 was complete bullshit, too. He blocked the shot through his hands, which wasn't his fault, and hit Blake in the face. He made a play for the ball so it shouldn't have been a flagrant at all, let alone a flagrant 2. The league is making themselves look silly to protect Blake and for their troubles, he shoots 10 20-footers a game. With Detroit and Van Gundy, he's making Jennings play out of character as well. That Detroit team was a bit of a lost cause to begin with so I kind of wonder if Van Gundy is using this season to develop some of the players that he thinks should have these skill sets. Just grind away and see if he can learn a skill, and go back to doing more PnR once the team has a chance to actually be relevant. If it works, sure, and he's a good enough athlete to do Hakeem moves, although he's not especially graceful. I don't really care since this team as constructed is apparently not good enough to do anything. Let them develop. Hopefully Towns or Mudiay will be great. Hopefully they can wring some trade value out of Smith and Monroe.

The NBA doesn't seem like the right setting for it, but now that you phrase it that way Van Gundy literally has a famous speech from a coaching seminar where he talks about exactly this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZ9jTOAMTtk I mean the speech is mainly targeted at coaching kids, but it's oddly specific to what's happening with Drummond.

The Van Gundy video makes some salient points. It's amazing how little basketball guys like Alex Poythress and Archie Goodwin were able to accomplish and still get (or will be) drafted. There is a non trivial amount of dudes who don't do anything productive until year 5 or 6 of their pro careers.
