Quote of the morning, "In my time in the Senate, there have been more than a few rocks tossed my direction from Democrats and Republicans. And yet in my entire time there, I haven’t reciprocated — you have never heard me speak ill of any senator, Republican or Democrat. And I don’t intend to start." ~ Ted Cruz, on his non-existent attempt to primary multiple of his Republican colleagues in the Senate that totally didn't happen.

DemeaninDemon posted:So the OKCupid gender identity list but for shitheel businesses? Basically yes. Get those signs up in the windows of businesses and have people out taking photos of those signs. These people need to be shamed nationally and since nobody will come out and say for certain whether this law discriminates (obviously it does) then this confirms it. It won't sway hardline conservatives, but I think a lot of people would look on it differently if it was framed a certain way.

Probably unconstitutional, but when the law you're amending is also unconstitutional who the gently caress cares, maximum trolling.

A friend of mine said he'd read an article/essay that was recently in the New Yorker or Atlantic or something about a campaign to rebrand Christianity as pro-capitalism in midcentury American churches. He couldn't remember where it was but I wanted to read it. Does anyone know what I'm taking about?

Well there was a fairly huge effort to nail down God as being a true supporter of the USA and only the USA, which is why the Pledge was changed during the Cold War. Ultimately the claim "Jesus was the first Socialist/Communist" is untrue, but it is absolutely true of the founder of the church Saint Peter.

Ghost of Reagan Past posted:Ooh, next time one gets proposed, they should propose amendments to require it to be claimed pre-emptively. The law just doesn't apply if you don't claim a religious freedom exemption...also, the list of businesses claiming an exemption gets published on an easy-to-search website. Yeah exactly. If they are going to claim something on religious grounds, then it should be made public so that others do not interfere with their decisions. It's about respect with other members of the community. We wouldn't want anyone saying they didn't know about someone's freedom and then subsequently discriminating against that freedom do we? Make it loud and clear so that everyone knows what someone's religious inclinations are so that everyone can accommodate their beliefs. It's the good Christian thing to do!

Sums up nicely with a bastardization of the camel through the needle metaphor. Basically it says the eye of the needle was a small gate or mountain pass that the camel just had to bow (before God) in order to pass on through.

Well yeah I'm familiar with the way it is now but this was apparently some article/book review that cited research that argued that TPTB spending a lot of money on a concerted campaign was what caused modern American Protestantism to forget all that "love your neighbor" stuff. It sounded interesting and similar to the largely effective and well-documented campaign in the 70s-80s to install pro-capital claptrap in the academy.

Edit: TCF bank; it all makes sense now.
