raging bullwinkle posted:Nice one! This looks really natural. Do you use any animation plugins/tools for Maya? Nope, no plugins. That's mostly determined by needing to sit at different computers at school. I'd have to install plugins on each one and that's impractical. Do you use plugins? (which ones!) I can't take full credit for the animation. It was about two hours including critique from my animation prof and he coached me into fixing things. I ran out of time and one of the last critiques I got was that she's "hitting a wall" when she settles. It's killing me now and I might find the file and add some overlapping sway. Your punch animation is beyond my level lol. I like it a lot, and how you can see the key pose at the beginning of the punch. Really helps establish the beginning and end of the very quick motion. The character has a very quick weight to it. Omi no Kami I forgot to mention that after compressing keys you should apply "snap" to the keys to make sure key poses happen on a distinct frame. Can be accomplished by highlighting the keys in the time slider and right-click -> snap you can adjust the fps by clicking the little running man icon at the right edge of the time slider bar http://i.imgur.com/82pxpZV.gifv

Elsa posted:Do you use plugins? (which ones!) I only use one (tweenMachine), but I suspect I should use more. http://justinsbarrett.com/tweenmachine/ It helps you create breakdowns. Like, if you have key poses on frames 1 and 10, and you want to make a breakdown pose on frame 7, but you want to favor the first pose by 70%, you just select frame 7 and drag the slider to -70 (obviously you'll still need to tweak the breakdown it created but it speeds things up a lot).

Thanks guys! I had a go at another punching animation after watching some youtube videos. I learned a trick where you invert the curve of the body to create a whipping sensation and it feels like it's working. It kind of looks like he's snatching something off somebody but I think there's def more energy than last time at least. http://i.imgur.com/E8Q0HDd.gifv raging bullwinkle fucked around with this message at 09:02 on Apr 22, 2017 |

Elsa posted:I think the right leg should come forward slower, as in a lunge. It looks like there's an invisible force propelling the right leg. Yeah, looking at it with fresh eyes it does seem too quick. It's a bit like he's on a planet with 2x gravity. I have a bad habit of watching an animation over and over until it looks normal. I think I need to take more breaks or something.

I made another YouTube tutorial. This time I did a full scene from scratch. The animation in it is pretty minimal, it's supposed to be more about doing all the different parts and bringing it all together to get a polished finished product. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6yLLm1CPRY

Btw, I found with 3d, if interpretation [linear or spline] is distracting, used stepped pose to pose first to hit your timing beats, get your best poses, etc. Keep adding poses and flesh things out, then do your hookups/overlapping animation afterward. That way you can go -> Key poses only -> get composition/timing sign off -> initial interpolation -> final interpolation/detailed animation. If you want brownie points for 3d Features/VFX/etc , do a 10 frame preroll/post roll of your gross motion [at a minimum] that way the simulation guys have something to work with if they need to pre-roll effects animation interaction with your character.

I learned that stepped method first, but when i finally started working in a studio I was told not to do it. They said most animators aren't good enough with timing and spacing to actually animate with stepped keys, and they misjudge how many frames they'll need in between those keys. They only allow people who have years of experience with 2d animation to do it. There's a way to blast in Maya with stepped keys on a playblast so you can still test our your strong poses and timing beats that way though.

You key main poses and watch how the program interpolates them. That gives you a sense of, when you a put a breakdown pose in, whether it will actually work or if things are just way too fast and no matter what the breakdown is (unless it's a smear) it won't work. A lot of newbies who aren't good at spacing misjudge how much they can move a character in a certain number of frames, and not letting them do stepped keys helps with that.

I see. So you avoid the "12-frame-yawn" problem.
|
# ? Jun 8, 2017 12:16 |

Yeah. It's not necessarily the greatest workflow, but when you have to hire a bunch of animators quickly, many of whom have never animated before (but are able to qualify for tax credits because of where they live) then you're forced to change workflow.
