When I saw that ESPN was making "The Two Bills," I assumed it was about Parcells and Walsh, because I'm pretty sure the entire NFL can be traced back to one or the other.

OK, here it is. Tried to find the shortest path for each, but I probably missed a few things. Many coaches fit into both trees.

quote:

Sean McDermott -----> Andy Reid -----> Mike Holmgren -----> Bill Walsh
Adam Gase -----> Josh McDaniels -----> Bill Belichick -----> Bill Parcells
Bill Belichick -----> Parcells
Todd Bowles -----> Parcells

John Harbaugh -----> Ray Rhodes -----> Walsh
Marvin Lewis -----> Brian Billick -----> Dennis Green -----> Walsh
Hue Jackson -----> Lewis -----> Billick -----> Green -----> Walsh
Mike Tomlin -----> Tony Dungy -----> Green -----> Walsh

Bill O'Brien -----> Belichick -----> Parcells
Frank Reich -----> Doug Pederson -----> Reid -----> Holmgren -----> Walsh
Doug Marrone -----> Sean Payton -----> Parcells
Mike Vrabel -----> O'Brien -----> Belichick -----> Parcells

Vance Joseph -----> Lewis -----> Billick -----> Green -----> Walsh
Andy Reid -----> Holmgren -----> Walsh
Anthony Lynn -----> Parcells
Jon Gruden -----> Holmgren -----> Walsh

Jason Garrett -----> Nick Saban -----> Belichick -----> Parcells
Pat Shurmur -----> Mike Zimmer -----> Parcells
Doug Pederson -----> Reid -----> Holmgren -----> Walsh
Jay Gruden -----> Jon Gruden -----> Holmgren -----> Walsh

Matt Nagy -----> Reid -----> Holmgren -----> Walsh
Matt Patricia -----> Belichick -----> Parcells
Mike McCarthy -----> Rhodes -----> Walsh
Mike Zimmer -----> Parcells

Dan Quinn -----> Steve Mariucci -----> Holmgren -----> Walsh
Ron Rivera -----> Reid -----> Holmgren -----> Walsh
Sean Payton -----> Parcells
Dirk Koetter -----> Jack Del Rio -----> Billick -----> Green -----> Walsh

Steve Wilks -----> Rivera -----> Reid -----> Holmgren -----> Walsh
Sean McVay -----> Jay Gruden -----> Jon Gruden -----> Holmgren -----> Walsh
Kyle Shanahan -----> Jon Gruden -----> Holmgren -----> Walsh
Pete Carroll -----> George Seifert -----> Walsh

You could do some interesting things with this if you busted out the programming.

Walsh (and Chuck Noll as well) are from Paul Brown's coaching tree

I could have sworn Gase was also QB coach at one point. Maybe under Fox when McCoy was OC the first time around?

Your mistake started with thinking ESPN cares about anything west of Texas/north of Los Angeles.

Yeah, lots of adjustments could be made. You could mandate that no coach be on the same tier as someone they worked for. You could look solely at offense for Walsh and defense for Parcells. I might have to look into this more.

I'd argue you should only be on a coach's tree if you directly worked under them while they were HC

Yeah, McCoy was OC/QB coach under McDaniels. When McDaniels left, McCoy became full time OC, and Gase took over as the QB coach. Then Gase became the OC when McCoy left for San Diego.

That puts Wade Phillips on Marty's tree, which doesn't seem right either.

well McDermott and Rivera seem weird to have on the Reid tree for the same reason but what are you gonna do, put them under Jim Johnson?

I think Cowher is solely a Marty tree person unless I'm missing something, was with him at the Browns and then followed to KC.

I guess Jack Del Rio got his start under Ditka but it seems a stretch to call him part of his tree.

Reid and his proteges (Nagy, Pederson, Harbaugh, Rivera, Shurmur, McDermott, and you could probably shoehorn Bowles in there) are practically coaching 1/4 of the league

e: Tomlin too I guess (under Gruden and/or Childress)

Gruden is on the Ray Rhodes coaching tree.

Gruden coached for Holmgren on the Packers too, unless you're saying he's part of both in which case yeah. Also Ray Rhodes is part of Holmgren's tree too of course.

I think I'd argue Gruden learned more from Holmgren and Rhodes more from Bill Walsh/George Seifert if we're trying to put them into a single tree.
