So I reinstalled Half Life 2 and I was looking for some mods that work with the current game engine. I saw Half Life 2 Update, which is apparently just the base game with revamped textures and new lighting features, plus bugfixes. Has anyone here played it and can attest to this?

Other than that I'm looking for either solid level design like Minerva Metastasis, or wacky stuff like Half Mind 2.

Have you played Mistake of Pythagoras? It's pretty good, Gordon Freeman fights numbers and shapes.

That reminds me about this really weird HL1 mod. I can't remember the name, but there was like... giant food? Snark M&M's. I think it was all in russian or something? I remember playing it through in ages of yore and being really confused, but honestly kind of endeared to it...

Fake Edit: Checked the back pages on moddb, and found the drat thing.

Yeah HL2: Update is great. It mostly just fixes things Valve broke over the years and somewhat improves the lightmaps, I don't think there's new textures or anything that major even. Probably the biggest change is the altered/more obvious fog effects in the Canals and Ravenholm, and the upgraded particles. There's basically no reason not to play it since it's currently the best version of the game, and also fixes some consistency issues, like only a handful of the maps having an HDR skybox in current HL2.

e: Oh yeah and there's a commentary mode but it's really boring, it's just basically semi-well known youtubers like Ross Scott reciting what sounds like the Half-Life 2 Wikipedia article.

I thought you might like the Plunger Gun for Fallout 4, which sits comfortably on the Awesome side of the scale; strap mines and grenades to toilet plungers, then stick them to people or walls.

I've been sitting here for 5 mins trying to think of a joke to make but I just realised the animators of Mass Effect already did it for me

Pair it with the plunger bra for theme.

Conceding on this one, considering we went from modding being always a hobby to maybe a potential career opportunity.

One of the earliest greater examples would be Counter Strike and Day of Defeat turning into valve products. That's still pretty loving crazy to me to this day when fileplanet straight up broke down because everybody wanted DoD 2.0

We went from people just doing models just because they wanted to and freely downloading it, whether it be from FPSbanana, or from the mod's proper forum like Specialists. Even Natural Selection had some crazy poo poo like the Alien total conversion mod. To say nothing of Team fortress classic's mod craze

A lot of games use similar techniques now and look lightyears better than anything available beforehand with the benefit of having drastically lower VRAM usage. Instead of using individual textures for every asset you can just load up a library of a bunch of different materials and reuse the same ones dozens of times over without obvious tiling.
