Visiting there and living there are two different things. However this poo poo has got me considering moving back

Yesterday was a poo poo day, trying and failing to get a bunch of poo poo done around the house. Girlfriend's e36 has a no start issue and I can't diagnose why, the water main can't be turned off so I can't fix the taps in the shower, the internet is obviously shithouse, but is much worse than when she moved in and I broke one of the keys so now I have to replace a lock.

Today was much better, I took a deep breath, set up my turntable and then went and drove my nephew and his mum around buying stuff in preparation for his first birthday tomorrow. It's nice to have some family nearby after 15 or so years.

Depends where you live. If you go far south, sure. Snow, great skiing and all that jazz. Live in the middle and it's just windy and rainy and poo poo. Go further north and it's cold-ish and probably rainy and gray but at least you have a sweet active volcano to ski on if you so wish.

New Zealand is a great place to visit. However I have known a few people, including the wife, who lived there for a time and they mostly say it feels very isolated because... well it is. The second complaint is that your shopping options tend to be limited by what turned up on the ship that week but I think that is an exaggeration in my experience. I'm gonna keep this bike stock this year, next year it's getting a fork + handlebar upgrade so I can run a hydraulic front disc (ask me about my stopping distance). Then it's probably going to be time to disassemble everything, order new gaskets and forged internals and have a buddy build a cross-brace for it and order a beefier swingarm and better shocks.

NZ chat: Lived on the South Island for a half year, it was fantastic. It's a really mixed bag, though. If you don't like outdoors stuff and need an active social scene, it's not a great place. Lots of young people move away because of it. I found that if you stuck with whatever food was in season it brought down the cost of groceries significantly, so it helps not being a picky eater.

Winter was miserable. I've never felt so cold in my entire loving life. I'll gladly take -30C here on the prairies versus the few months of miserable single digit temps out there. The air is so moist it cuts right through you, nothing helps. The houses aren't loving insulated either and LOL at anyone having forced air heating. It was awful waking up to a house that was like 2C, but at least it made you look forward to going to work.

On the flip side, me and the other Canadian had the bike trails all to ourselves all winter pretty much. Also, bought an 80s JDM Corolla Saloon with the patented Clean Ace system for $800 and it was rad as gently caress.

I ordered a set of 4 BF Goodrich K02s for my Land Cruiser because gosh they are just the best looking tire for a 4x4 (it's really all about the white letters). And just like when I bought a set for the Rugger the cheapest place by a good amount is 4wheelparts.com since they match the price as everyone else (190 a tire in this case) but you get a $50 dollar discount on buying 4, and for me I get free delivery. You'd think Costco would have them beat but nope!
I don't understand it. I guess the downside is now I get a magazine from them filled with POISON JEEP RAGAGAAHGAHG stuff which is about as far away from what I like that is possible but how are they supposed to know what I'm putting these tires on?

I took yesterday off to fill out all of the onboarding paperwork for my new job (and because why not, what are they going to do - fire me?) and emailed my resignation around 1 PM once that was complete.

Walked into the office this morning, immediately noticed my laptop was missing from my desk. Manager was waiting, said he got my email and that the company "no longer requires your services, please pack your personal belongings and get out." Packed my poo poo and was frog-marched out the door. Manager did shake my hand and wish me luck in the future, so it wasn't all bad.

My thinking is since the company is circling the drain (they were horribly mismanaged for years and might go belly-up by the end of this year) they don't want to pay someone who's still learning for another two weeks. Or they're just being vindictive assholes. Either way I don't really care, after I found out their promises of "raises down the road" to make up for coming in under salary requirements on my job offer was a lie or at best would be deferred for several years it turned into a lifeboat job that I'm more than happy to get out of.

If you're fired and they didn't tell you during the day, when you get to work you just can't get in the building. Then security let's you into the lobby, and they bring you your poo poo in a box.

If you're fired during work, you just get your badge taken, marched out, and they mail you your poo poo.

Cue me being scared shitless last week one morning because my badge died. Thankfully it's just one of a bad batch that came through. But I was making GBS threads kittens until the security manager came out to me.

Never really gets below ~50 degrees in the winter and doesn't get above ~80 in the summer, which is pretty ideal for someone who lived in Seattle and Alaska for years. It does rain a lot tho. I didn't find this too bad on all my visits. Electronics/consumer goods are super expensive, but the food is great, except cheese. They don't understand what good cheese is and I have no idea why. The meat is amazing, some of the best beef/lamb/venison I have ever had was in NZ. One of the weirdest things being from the PNW, where deer are mostly a pest, is to see a paddock full of them. Just standing there, not jumping over the 3' tall fence.

It does get super isolated super fast once you leave big cities. I have driven for hours on "highways" down there and not seen a single other car or person. Except for the guy, walking with no car or bike in sight, who had "gently caress you all" tattooed across his forehead. At my company, if you are fired for cause, you get that sort of treatment (i.e. escorted out right now), but if you quit, it really depends on the person. Some will work right up to their final day based on their notice, while others will be thanked for their service and released that day, but paid through the end of their notice. ...seriously? They're going to let a personal vendetta from this guy be the deciding factor? I mean, I guess it would be awkward, but, man, that's unprofessional.

Well we're very good friends with the property manager and while she is technically his boss he does have hire approval. But I got a call from the regional manager and she wants me on board so I'll go over to one of the other properties for now. My "interview" with him was pretty uncomfortable, he clearly remembers me as being the reason behind his arrest.

But I also have an interview for a warehouse position for similar pay and another friend of mine has hit me with potential jobs at the local university.

Overtime pay at least, I hope?
Also, what is a "heading tech"?

Oh yeah, the money is great. Heading techs run the machines that are fed steel wire and turn them into bolts and screws using a two-strike single-die or a three-strike double-die process; depending on the machine and bolt size. The threads on the bolts & screws are put on in a seperate dept.
