SICK LOOT!
WOW! FINAL FANTASY! I'VE NEVER PLAYED FINAL FANTASY 5 BUT I WANT TO PLAY THIS RUN ANYWAY! WHAT AM I DOING?!

hi my names forums poster alcharagia and im here to tell you about the various types of jorbes you can obtain in this video game

Jobs in Final Fantasy 5 come in four batches: the Wind Crystal jobs, the Water Crystal jobs, the Fire Crystal jobs, and the Earth Crystal jobs. You obtain the Wind Crystal jobs after defeating Wing Raptor in the Wind Shrine, Water after defeating Garula in the Water Shrine, the first three Fire jobs after defeating Iron Claw in Karnak Castle, the second two after finding your Black Chocobo on Crescent Isle, and the collection completes itself with Earth after defeating the nefarious Dr. Archie Clapperclaw in Ronka Ruins.

Well, okay, there's also Freelancer and the GBA bonus jobs, but... you know what I mean.

I'M TOO DUMB TO UNDERSTAND ALL THESE NUMBERS! PLEASE TL;DR ME!!

Sure thing!

Name: Freelancer
Crystal: None
Available by: Use until a job you can actually use is obtained, Job Fair, Pure Chaos
Recommended: Versatility
Forbidden: Freeloading

Ahh, the humble Freelancer. Here's how your band of hobos start the game, and probably how they end it, too, if you're playing normally. Freelancer starts off absolutely worthless, but has two selectable command slots rather than the regular one, and while its stats start low, it inherits not only the stats of any job you've mastered, but also its passive abilities, such as Thief's Dash and Find Passages, Ninja's Dual Wield, Chemist's Pharmacology, and so on. It's also capable of equipping any armor in the game at all, which can have its uses. Being stuck with a Freelancer the whole game isn't great, but I'm sure you can make it work if you try.

Name: Knight
Crystal: Wind
Available in: Normal, Random, No750, Chaos, Pure Chaos, Classic
Recommended: Strength, Defense, Knight Swords, Protection
Forbidden: Versatility, Brave Blade

Congratulations! You have a tank! The most basic of tanks, Knight is astonishingly reliable the entire game. With a great pile of equipment, burliness, Two-Handed for greater damage output, and Cover to protect weaker party members, throwing a Knight in is almost guaranteed to give your survivability a real kick in the pants. 'Knight Swords' are a specific subset of Swords that only Knights can equip- they don't have a different icon if you're an idiot who plays SNES or, god forbid, PSX, but they exist. As far as killing things goes, though, Knights can't do anything but hit things, so they're extremely linearly-minded. You're going to have to get creative with more quadratic jobs to really kick it up, but that's not really Knight's fault; it's beefy and it hits hard and protects people who are weak. Oh, and it has Equip Shields and Shields rule, so there's that.

Eh? What's that? "What's the Brave Blade," you say? I'm glad you asked! Near the end of the game, in World 3, in the town of Moore (you'll have visited it before,) you unlock access to one of two weapons. The Chicken Knife is a Knife, so almost every class can equip it, and despite a 25% chance to proc Flee off of regular attacks, it gains more power the more fights you've run away from, and it uses a different damage calculation to all other Knives in the game to take into account your Agility as well, so its damage output is incredible. Combine it with abilities that alter your attack to skip the Flee proc, such as Mug or Dance, and the Chicken Knife can be a boon to drat near every team in the game.

Meanwhile, the Brave Blade can only be equipped by Knights, loses power for each fight you run away from, and uses the completely normal Sword damage calculation, so despite its higher raw Attack does less damage anyway, unless you two-hand it I guess, but you still have to never, ever run from a fight the entire drat game and it's still stuck to specifically Knights and not any of your other jobs that might need an offensive kick in the pants, so therefore:

Don't take the loving Brave Blade.

Name: White Mage
Crystal: Wind
Available in: Normal, Random, 750, Chaos, Pure Chaos, Classic
Recommended: Healing, Buffing, Defeating Shinryu
Forbidden: Attacking without Holy

Congratulations! By obtaining White Magic, you have ensured that once you obtain another job, you will never, ever, ever die. Kitted out with healing spells, buffs such as Blink, Protect, and Shell, and access to the wide and wacky world of Staves, White Mage is good at quite a lot, really. Plus, with Berserk and Blink on your side, Shinryu- one of the game's two superbosses- becomes vastly more manageable. The problem inherent is that White Mage doesn't obtain an attacking spell until Holy, a solid ways into World 3, and until then is so laughably terrible at attacking that if you're actually bothering and you had a choice in the matter, you are committing Wrong Action. It can't even use Rods! So, hope you get some offense early on or you're going to have a real slog. Also, I'm sorry about fighting Garula with White Mages, if it comes to that. The bright side is, Almagest ain't poo poo!

Name: Thief
Crystal: Wind
Available in: Normal, Random, No750, Chaos, Pure Chaos, Classic
Recommended: Convenience, Thievery
Forbidden: Damage (both Giving and Receiving,) Speed Trap

Congratulations! Thief is one of the most convenient jobs in the game; not only does it increase your running speed on the overworld, it also makes hidden passages clearly visible, gives you an instant run ability from the word 'go,' and Steal, naturally, grants you access to a ton of great equipment, whether earlier than you might expect or things you simply can't get otherwise (plus you don't have to deal with the Thief Knife in World 3, so that's rad.) Having a Thief can seriously bolster the capabilities of other jobs by grabbing stuff for it- if you have a Dancer, for instance, grab a Lamia's Tiara in the Ronka Ruins and you'll be singing Thief's praises for basically the entirety of World 2.

Unfortunately, note I said other jobs. Thief itself, despite its incredible speed in battle as well, is exclusively locked to Knives, isn't particularly strong, and is quite frail. It makes a great Chicken Knife user thanks to Mug, at least, but there are good swathes of the game where Thief in battle is useful for hurling items and basically nothing else. In a lot of cases, it's a nice addition, but unlike some other jobs, there is definitely a chance of coming up short. At least it's fast!

Name: Black Mage
Crystal: Wind
Available in: Normal, Random, 750, Chaos, Pure Chaos, Classic
Recommended: Elemental Damage, Rods, Reliability
Forbidden: Flare

IIIIII AM A loving WIZARD!!!!!

Congratulations! You're going to blow peoples' faces off by being a loving wizard! Black Mage is reliable, versatile, and strong pretty much the entire game; there are brief points when its offenses fall off, but these can always be saved by the use of Rods. Kitted out with a wide variety of standard elemental spells and some status ailments occasionally too, blasting peoples' faces off is fun and practical. Equipping an elemental Rod increases the damage of that spell, so a Flame Rod, for instance, boosts the damage of Fire spells. Of course, Black Mage also isn't particularly burly, and Flare is utterly worthless because of the aforementioned elemental boosting making the third-tier spells just flat out better than it, but poo poo, when a class's primary complaints are 'standard mage frailty' and 'its ultimate spell isn't strong enough,' do you really have much to complain about?

Name: Monk
Crystal: Wind
Available in: Normal, Random, No750, Chaos, Pure Chaos, Classic
Recommended: Vitality, Levels, Punching
Forbidden: Worlds 2 and 3

Congratulations! Your earlygame is on easy street! Kitted out with a bunch of worthless commands but also the power of Raw Fisting and the highest Vitality in the game, Monk's damage tolerance just through surviving hits is pretty solid. Barehanded-powered fists not only hit twice, but they scale up depending on your level, so they automatically get better the longer you play the game, and earlygame, are pretty solidly your Best Option (and they can crit, too!) What could go wrong?

Well, uh, what could go wrong is you get later in the game and the scaling makes their previously-burly fists slowly become wet noodles as levels slow and the scaling prevents them from keeping up. Being the one class in the game that doesn't have access to any of the endgame weapons, you have an unfortunate dearth of, well, damage. But at least you had an easy earlygame.

Unless you have Bard or Chemist, the two classes that can increase your party's levels in battle, in which case a lategame Monk becomes a hideous engine of two-fisted destruction that can output absurd numbers, so if you get Monk and Bard or Chemist, pat yourself on the back a bit and grab those pianos or a massive pile of Hero Cocktails.

Name: Blue Mage
Crystal: Wind
Available in: Normal, Random, 750, Chaos, Pure Chaos
Recommended: Math, Guides, Self-Sacrifice, Excalipoor
Forbidden: Fashion Sense

Congratulations! It's time to bust out a calculator! Blue Mage, naturally, obtains attacks by being hit by enemy abilities. Blue Magic is an absurdly versatile skillset, with skills such as Vampire (on the good GBA version, drains HP equal to the amount of HP you don't have,) Goblin Punch (a row-independent replacement for the Attack command that deals 8x damage if the enemy is the same level as you,) Mighty Guard (Protect, Shell, and Float to the entire party,) the entire assortment of Aero spells, White Wind (heals the entire party for the caster's current HP,) Death Claw (reduces an enemy to single-digit HP and inflicts Paralyze,) Transfusion (sacrifice the caster to Elixir another party member,) the list goes on. There's very little Blue Mage can't do, which is helped along by its ability to use both Swords and Rods, for melee or magical damage.

Of course, probably the Blue Mage's most notable trait is its math powers. Enemies do in fact have levels in this video game, and the Blue Mage loves that; its spells Level 2 Old, Level 3 Flare, Level 4 Graviga, and Level 5 Death (!!) automatically, without missing, ignoring all resistances, hit any enemy whose level is divisible by its stated number, so in other words, a Blue Mage can instantly kill any enemy whose level is divisible by 5. Since the Old status decreases an enemy's level over time, and they also come with Dark Spark, which halves an enemy's level, committing Action Math can cause you to do some ridiculous poo poo. (Fun fact if you have Chemist: Level caps out at 255!)

The weakness inherent here is 'needing to know how to get the Blue Magic spells' and 'needing to know an enemy's level,' naturally, so you're probably gonna need a guide for those things, at least, but Blue Mage is some serious poo poo, yo.

Name: Red Mage
Crystal: Water
Available in: Normal, Random, 750, Chaos, Pure Chaos, Classic
Recommended: Grinding, Dualcast
Forbidden: Objets d'Art

So, Red Mage is... well, it's... not the best thing ever? Its access to both White and Black magic cap out at level 3, meaning you'll never get anything better than Cura, but at least you have Raise and Protect. It has the golden grail of Dualcast, which allows you to cast two spells in a single action, but that puppy costs 999 JP, so you're going to need to spend quite a while in Galuf's basement hurling Gold Needles at Odin's art collection to get there. Even with Dualcast, of course, once you get it you're just hurling two second-tier Black Magic spells in a turn instead of one, so... that's... you know, it's something. It does have solid weapon selection (and Rods,) though, and can Dualcast Raise or multi-targeted Cura, which is certainly something. It's not the best, but it could easily be worse, and has pretty solid utility because of its wide weapon selection (busting staves over Exdeath's head, for instance.)

The real cash here, though, is if you get Red Mage and another class that has a magic ability, since equipping Dualcast to, say, a Black Mage means you can Dualcast any Black Magic spell. Wanna hurl two Firagas in a single turn? Go ahead! Blast off with two Holies? Hit eight times with Meteor? Two Syldras?! You got it, pops! Go get 'em! 999 JP, but you've got the power to keep my fire burning!

Name: Time Mage
Crystal: Water
Available in: Normal, Random, 750, Chaos, Pure Chaos
Recommended: Haste, Meteor, Teleport, Float
Forbidden: Reliable Damage, Non-broken Rods

Congratulations! You are now immune to basically all Earth-elemental attacks, can cast Haste, get Meteor come endgame, and most importantly, you can teleport out of dungeons you've completed and don't have to run out of them again. Time Magic is as buff-y as it ever is, allowing you to take control of that ATB bar and wrangle it to work how it loving ought ta. Also, you get Equip Rods for that sweet, sweet rod-breaking action, and you get Quick lategame, which allows you to kill literally anything in the game in your actual, literal sleep, so that's cool.

Oh, yeah, by the way, if you use an elemental Rod you have equipped like an item in your item menu, you break it and cast a third-tier Black Magic spell. You might wanna know that, because Time Mage has gently caress all offensive presence otherwise until you get Comet, a spell that deals entirely randomized damage, in World 2. Break yourself some loving rods, you little poo poo! Snap them all over your knee! You have Equip Rods! Use it! Every rod must die!

Name: Mystic Knight
Crystal: Water
Available in: Normal, Random, No750, Chaos, Pure Chaos
Recommended: Status Ailments, Elemental Weaknesses, Swords
Forbidden: Seal Guardians, Exdeath

So let's talk about Mystic Knight.

Mystic Knight works by applying Sword Magic to your regular attacks. This is largely Black Magic, but the few White Magic status ailments can also be applied. If an elemental weakness is struck, the attack ignores defense and deals extra damage, the higher-tier the Sword Magic the more extra damage. If an enemy can be applied with a status ailment at all, then the attack inflicts it. This ignores status accuracy checks; if it hits, it just does the status, up to and including the instant-kill Break status, which one of the four parts of the final boss can be inflicted with. The few remaining Sword Magics apply effects to your attacks- Drain and Osmose sword heal your HP or MP for the damage you deal, unsurprisingly, and Flare adds a flat attack bonus and makes your attacks ignore Defense.

Mystic Knight is the single best status applier in the game and can instant-kill one fourth of the final boss, along with being able to drain health with its attacks, exploit elemental weaknesses so hard that third-tier Sword Magics straight up insta-kill from hitting a weakness, and then also if somehow that doesn't work they can just ignore Defense, too.

Mystic Knight is loving stupid. Congrats on your Mystic Knight. (...have fun with late World 2, though.)

Name: Summoner
Crystal: Water
Available in: Normal, Random, 750, Chaos, Pure Chaos
Recommended: Sidequests, Air Knives, Gaia Gear
Forbidden: Mana

...what do you mean I have to explain what it does?

Summoner might seem better than every other class in the game, but I assure you: it is. Its one "flaw" is the expensive cost of its spells, but ohhh nooo, you might run out in the five battles between save points. What Summoner offers, on the other hand, is unparalleled multi-target damage from the word go, starting with its elemental summons and ending with Syldra, who outdamages Bahamut with an Air Knife and can plaster the entire game into little pieces, the best defensive kit in the entire game with Golem and Carbuncle, and- look, you won the loving game. Summoner means you won the loving game. Okay? You win. Just take the crown and go home.

Name: Berserker
Crystal: Water
Available in: Normal, Random, No750, Chaos, Pure Chaos, BERSERKER RISK
Recommended: Chaos
Forbidden: Sandworm

So, Berserkers are the slowest class in the game, their exclusive weapon class has an accuracy penalty, and you can't control them; for all of their turns they just attack, targeting randomly. They aren't the worst class in the game, but wowie zowie, this puppy's rough. Unless you get multiple because of BERSERKER RISK, in which case you knew what you were getting into.

They do have their upsides, it's worth noting. Death Sickles, a weapon you can obtain off of Harvesters on Crescent Isle that only these goobers can equip, are very powerful for that point and can proc Death, which can really help against some tough bosses, especially the mother loving Seal Guardians. They're decently burly, and strong, and Axes do ignore most of an enemy's Defense stat, and if you have a magic-wielding class, the Rune Axe in World 3 does some bonkers damage with that Magic stat. But, uh.

Well, you know...

Name: Mime
Crystal: Water (World 3)
Available by: Job Fair, Pure Chaos
Recommended: Mimicry
Forbidden: Originality

Technically it's a Water Crystal job, but you only get Mime from a sidequest late in the game, hence its being cordoned off. Mime's a quirky one- it has three open slots, inherits stats and passives like Freelancer, and its unique command is Mimic, which copies the last move used in the battle. It has an eclectic, but wide choice of equipment. Obviously, given that, you can probably tell Mime has the potential to be really, really loving bonkers; but the downside is that unless you use mods, you won't be getting it for most of the game, and you'll be stuck with a Freelancer in your party. Still, though, it's a great job that's only improved by good teammates. Also the boss fight to get it is hilarious.

Name: Beastmaster
Crystal: Fire (Group 1)
Available in: Normal, Random, No750, Chaos, Pure Chaos
Recommended: Guides, Kornago Gourd, Bears
Forbidden: Your time

Hi, I heard you wanted a job that's theoretically really good but is a gigantic pain in the rear end to use? Beastmaster's primary claim to fame is the Catch command; by targeting monsters below a certain percentage of health, 12.5% normally and 50% with the Kornago Gourd accessory, you can catch it, and then Release it later. Each monster in the game has a unique Release, and some of them are real loving powerful; it's possible to blow off 39,996 of World 2 Exdeath's HP in four actions by releasing a quartet of Yellow Dragons on him.

The problem, naturally, lies in the fact that preparing these bomb-rear end moves can be a gigantic pain in your rear end and can sometimes take longer than actually just fighting the drat boss normally, especially before you get the Kornago Gourd. On their own, Beastmasters have Whips, which do have their uses, but aren't really that great on a regular basis aside from being backrow-OK, and stats that are solidly in the range of 'meh.' Really utilizing a Beastmaster to their full potential is, as I said earlier, a gigantic pain in the rear end. So... uh, good luck.

Oh, but it's really good for beating Omega! And getting Blue Magic! Good on you if you get Beastmaster with Blue Mage!

Name: Ninja
Crystal: Fire (Group 1)
Available in: Normal, Random, No750, Chaos, Pure Chaos
Recommended: Dual-Wielding, Speed, Real Ultimate Power
Forbidden: Vendor Trash

As we all know, Ninjas have Real Ultimate Power. This translates in FF5 to, uh, having loving Everything. Two weapons, increased pre-emptive strike rate, the ability to Blink themselves and a guaranteed escape command, two weapons, Throw makes all that vendor trash useful along with giving you Shuriken and scrolls, two weapons, good stats, unique equipment choices, and uh, did I mention the two weapons part? Ninja is really loving good. It's really loving good the entire game. There is no point in the game where a Ninja will not kick rear end. Congratulations.

You can avoid pits and terrain damage.

Name: Ranger
Crystal: Fire (Group 2)
Available in: Normal, Random, No750, Chaos, Pure Chaos
Recommended: Rapid Fire
Forbidden: Front Row

Rapid Fire deals four physical attacks that have half regular damage, but ignore defense and cannot miss.

Oh, but also Bows are really useful and have a great complement of weapons and utility (great access to Blind, for one thing,) Aim means you will Never Miss, Animals can come in handy for Nightingale... Rapid Fire deals four physical attacks that have half regular damage, but ignore defense and cannot miss.

They're good forest friends, Brent.

Name: Bard
Crystal: Fire (Group 2)
Available in: Normal, Random, 750, Chaos, Pure Chaos
Recommended: Romeo's Ballad
Forbidden: Undead

Now here's an interesting one. Bards have low magic power, a (mostly) completely poo poo weapon class, and are frail as hell. They are also capable of stunlocking Omega.

Sing is a small, but deceptively powerful skillset. The stat buff Songs increase your party's stat in question for each ATB tick the Bard spends singing, Romeo's Ballad and Alluring Air are all-target Stop and Confuse with no MP cost, Requiem obliterates undead enemies, and nobody's going to complain about all-target Regen, I wouldn't think. Bard is great for stunlocking random encounters, buffing your party into the stratosphere for long fights, making Monks absolutely loving ridiculous, and turning the Great Sea Trench from a pain in the rear end to an amazingly good grinding location. Oh, and their ultimate weapon does 8x damage to dragons. Handle with care, but Bards have a lot of utility and potential.

Name: Dragoon
Crystal: Earth
Available in: Normal, Random, No750, Chaos, Pure Chaos
Recommended: Jumping
Forbidden: Grades higher than a C

Dragoon isn't terrible. It's... it's okay, y'know? It's okay. Spears can be nice every now and again, they're reasonably burly, Jump can avoid some things... they're... they're okay. It's not like there's anything particularly wrong with them. It's- they're okay. Not fast, not, like, exceptional, they're... they're okay.

Name: Dancer
Crystal: Earth
Available in: Normal, Random, 750, Chaos, Pure Chaos
Recommended: Ribbons, Sword Dance, Rainbow Dress
Forbidden: Surviving a hit, Consistency

The objectively best fashion in the game, so clearly it's the best class.

Anyway, so Dancers are the only class that can equip Ribbons, and their Dance Command has a 25% chance of dealing quadruple damage with Sword Dance, or otherwise it just does Drain or Osmose, which is nice. They have unique, strong equipment that confers status immunities and increases Sword Dance's chances to 50%, which gives you a pretty solid boost; and you can get one before the Earth Crystal, even, if you have a Thief!

On the other hand, you're still rolling dice each time you use Dance, and, uh...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ko0J8Ft_bxg

But Sword Dance with the Chicken Knife is really loving strong!!

Name: Samurai
Crystal: Earth
Available in: Normal, Random, No750, Chaos, Pure Chaos
Recommended: Katanas, HONOR
Forbidden: Gil

Congratulations! You're poor! A melee class par excellence, Samurai have exclusive access to Katanas, a group of weapons with great critical hit chance, as well as an innate 25% evasion against physical attacks (stack with Elven Mantle and Aegis Shield for hilarity,) strong stats, and the multi-target instant-kill skill Iainuki, which works bafflingly often.

Oh, and they can hurl money at enemies to inflict mass multi-target damage. Zeninage deals incredible level-based damage to all enemies by expending your hard-earned cash, and can wipe several encounters clean off the map in one or two uses. It's consistent, powerful, and incredibly useful, buuuut you're going to be running around with a gaping hole in your wallet if you overuse it. (The question of whether you need money for anything else is a separate issue.) It's not the best job in the same, but Samurai is one of the best results you can get for a melee class and has a fantastic kit. Count yourself lucky, and God bless us, every one.

Name: Chemist
Crystal: Earth
Available in: Normal, Random, 750, Chaos, Pure Chaos
Recommended: Drugs
Forbidden: Turtles

Last on our list is the theoretically most powerful job in the game. Chemist doesn't just get double-strength healing items and the self-buffing Drink command, oh no; the real cash money here is Mix, which can mix two consumables together for any number of effects, some of which are some real powerful poo poo. Level buffs, incredible healing, HP draining par excellence, granting your party members elemental absorptions or Heavy flags or whatnot, ramming the 9999 HP cap with the speed of a freight train, about the only thing it can't do is help you catch a Skull Eater. :v: Enemy defenses are more like a suggestion when you run a Chemist. The downside is having to study your drugs, but once you become a true drug lord, this whole town's a pussy just waiting to get hosed.

OH BOY! MY TEAM SUCKS! I CAN'T WAIT TO DIE TO SANDWORM BECAUSE OF MY BERSERKERS!

However, with 2016 basically being a conga line of nothing but Water Crystal Red Mages and Mystic Knights, I became very, very intimately aware of just how bad MK weapon selection is and just how bad Red Mage's stats are.

They're barely better than beginning-of-game freelancers. Once you're past Big Bridge, the utility of Protect and Raise (and status spells) is just about all they have going for them unless they can piggyback another class's stats from a command. They can't even break 2k damage with rodsnapping until maybe the Rift.

Ready to Poyozo Dance all over your face.
Once more, for those joining us for the first time, I present my

List of Abilities You Want to Give Your Berserker

As we all know, the Berserker is uncontrollable in battle, meaning that most active commands are useless for it. So what do you fill that extra ability slot with when you're setting up your job? Well, there are a number of options that may surprise you, but let's just go down the list, job by job.

Knight: Two-Handed and Equip Swords are the main draw here. Most axes in the game are flagged to be compatible with Two-Handed, which can really pump up your damage numbers. On the other hand, if you want your Berserkers to actually land hits with some consistency, Equip Swords gives them access to a better weapon class and also bumps up their Strength by a few points, just to let them hit even harder. A Berserker with Equip Swords is one of those rare niche cases where you might want to actually consider grabbing the Brave Blade, assuming you don't have other classes that can easily use the Chicken Knife. So in the end it comes down to do you want the potential for huge burst of damage on occasion? Give them Two-Handed. Do you want consistent damage output? Give them Equip Swords.

Monk: Basically, either HP+30% or Bare Handed. As far as HP+30% is concerned, you actually probably don't need it; Berserkers have the second highest Stamina stat in the game, meaning that their HP numbers are actually almost on par with Monks, who beat them in the Stamina department by a single measly point. The practical upswing to this is that unlike Monks, who are stuck in light armor and thus need that extra buffer of HP to survive more than two hits, Berserkers can wear real armor and shields that will allow them to tank hits without immediately folding like wet cardboard. So while extra HP can be nice, it's not really necessary.

Bare Handed on the other hand is always useful for Berserkers, both early and late game. Early game, you can just have your Berserkers punch poo poo to avoid having to put up with the accuracy penalty of axes/hammers or the weaker damage of daggers, with the added bonus of possibly scoring critical hits. However, it's important to note that just because Bare Handed gives you the option to use your fists, you're not required to do so. So later in the game, once you've got some of the better axes and hammers and the damage from fists starts to drop off because of the poor scaling, Bare Handed is still useful because it bumps your Strength up to the same score as a Monk would have.

Counter is a trap. Avoid Counter. The reason being that the Berserk status you're constantly locked into prevents Counter from going off.

Thief: Artful Dodger is really your only option here, mostly due to the fact that all the other passives are redundant by virtue of already having a thief in your party. Artful Dodger doesn't really do anything except give your Berserker the same Agility score as a Thief, which is arguably more useful in the versions where the ATB for Berserkers isn't buggy, but there are still plenty of better options out there.

White Mage: Surprisingly, you want to give your Berserker !White 6. Even though you can't cast spells in battle, giving your Berserker this ability boosts their Magic stat to be on par with a White Mage's, which in turn increases the amount of MP you have available, and also affects your damage output for two late game axes, the Rune Axe and the Gaia Hammer. As an added bonus, you can still have your Berserker use their healing spells outside of battle to top off your party if you feel like you need to, thus conserving your real White Mage's MP for actual combat situations.

Black Mage: You want !Black 6 for the same reasons as !White 6, minus the whole "can heal the party outside of battle" part of it.

Blue Mage: Either !Blue for the same reason as the other two mages, or Learning, just so that you have an extra body on hand to help learn Blue Magic spells.

Summoner: You want !Summon 5 for the same reasons as !Black 6.

Time Mage: Did you guess "!Time 6" for this one? Give yourself a gold star. Though Equip Rods is also there as a comedy option if you're bored.

Red Mage: Same deal as the other mage classes, give yourself !Red 3 to boost your Magic stat. In theory, you could also achieve the same results with !Dualcast, but in practice if you were to do that, I'm pretty sure everyone else in this thread would personally track you down and slap you upside the head for it.

On that note, if you happen to roll into multiple Mage jobs alongside your Berserker, here's how you'll want to prioritize which ability to give him: !Summon > !Black > !White > !Time > !Blue > Equip Harps > !Red. Yes, Red Mages actually have worse Magic stats than Bards.

Mystic Knight: I suppose you could give your Berserker !Spellblade 6 if all else fails; you're not going to get a huge increase to the Magic stat, but it's better than nothing. You don't really benefit from the Strength boost, since as a Berserker you have a natively higher strength to begin with. Magic Shell's not really worth bothering with - if the enemy can knock you down to low enough health for it to trigger, something has gone horribly wrong somewhere and you're probably about to die anyway.

Bard: You want Equip Harps for three four reasons:

1. It boosts your Agility, so you're not slow as poo poo anymore.
2. It boosts your Magic, which powers up the Rune Axe and Gaia Hammer.
3. You can give your Berserker the Apollo Harp and let them shred dragons with it.
4.

Ranger: Equip Bows is pretty good. It helps you by giving your Agility a boost, and also gives you the option to shove your Berserker in the back row with a Bow instead of an Axe, making them even harder to kill. It should be noted that bows tend to have accuracy issues similar to axes, so there's honestly no reason not to do this if you have the bows to spare and you don't need anything a given axe might offer you in return.

On a related note, Rangers themselves can actually make pretty good use of Equip Axes before you pick up !Rapid Fire to replace it. It'll boost their Strength to be on par with a Berseker's, and their innate !Aim command makes axes' poor accuracy a non-issue.

Beastmaster: Equip Whips is a solid choice. They don't have much to offer in the way of attack power, but they'll let you sit in the back row and potentially paralyze enemies you hit with them. Also, most whips tend to deal bonus damage to certain kinds of enemies, and there's plenty of them to go around so you won't really be stepping on your Beastmaster's toes when it comes to endgame weapon selection. It also gives you a slight boost to your Agility, but it's not as big a deal as it is for Artful Dodger, Equip Bows or Equip Harps.

Ninja: Dual Wield. Like with Thieves, the other passive offered by a Ninja is redundant, since you'll already have a Ninja providing it for you. You'll take a slight hit to your durability, since you're giving up the protection of a shield for another weapon, but your damage numbers will generally make up for it, since you won't be taking hits from dead enemies.

Geomancer: This class has nothing to offer you; the passives skills it teaches are redundant since you'll already have a Geomancer in your party. And that hippie poo poo !Gaia won't pass along the Geomancer's Magic stat, unlike real magic commands. I mean, gently caress, even the goddamn Red Mage gives you a boost to your Magic stat, and when a loving Red Mage outclasses you at something, you know things are pretty goddamn dire.

As for the Geomancer itself, it's another class that can get some good mileage out of Equip Axes, because it still has a beefy innate Magic stat, so it can put out some decent damage with the Rune Axe or Gaia Hammer.

Samurai: Can't decide between the consistency of Equip Swords or burst potential of Two-Handed? Consider Equip Katanas! Like normal swords, they have a consistent damage formula and aren't hampered by the same accuracy penalty axes suffer from. But they also have innate chances to crit, meaning you can still suddenly explode a random enemy's face out of nowhere on a lucky swing! It's the best of both worlds!

Alternately, Shirahadori/Blade Grasp makes for a fine defensive passive if you feel like you need to worry about enemy physical attacks. Giving a Berserker the Aegis Shield, the Main Gauche, an Elf Mantle and Shirahadori on top of their already insanely high HP totals and high defense scores from heavy armor makes them insanely difficult to kill with physical hits... and since you've got the Aegis Shield on there, you're also avoiding nasty enemy spells 33% of the time.

Dragoon: Equip Spears is... eh, it's fine. It's fine, really. I mean, it's more consistent than Axes, and there are a few that have elemental properties that can hit weaknesses, or deal extra damage against dragons, I guess. I mean, ideally you'll have better options than this, but if you don't, it's fine. Equip Spears is fine.

Dancer: The misleadingly named Equip Ribbons actually gives you the ability to equip the four Dancer-specific pieces of gear in the game - the Ribbon, the Man-eater dagger, the Rainbow Dress and Red Shoes. Of the four, the Ribbon and Man-Eater are really the only ones worth considering. Ribbons give you +5 to all stats (mostly you just care about the Strength) and immunity to a host of debilitating status effects. The Man-Eater, despite being a dagger, is coded to deal damage as a spear, and also effectively crits any enemy that's humanoid. You have better options for armor and accessories than the Rainbow Dress and the Red Shoes, both of which basically only offer you Confusion immunity (Berserkers are innately immune to Confuse due to permanent Berserk status) and an increased chance of getting Sword Dance when using !Dance (which Berserkers can only do randomly if you give them the Dancing Dagger).

Chemist: Since you can't use Items in combat as a Berserker, you don't get any benefit from Pharmacology. That said, it doesn't really matter because you have a loving Chemist in your party, which means you have access to !Mix, and have basically already won the game, so what you choose to give your Berserker is immaterial at that point.

I did not remember that Fire jobs are split up. I have a question about that: Do you query Gilgabot for fire job on getting the first set, or after getting the second set? I imagine it is on the first set, and if the chosen job is in the second set to just procede as normal until you get it.

Yeah, general rule of thumb is to Tweet for your fire job after Karnak Castle explodes. If you get Ranger or Bard, you're stuck waiting until you get to the Black Chocobo to use them (unless you're using cheats or hacks to unlock all jobs automatically from the start).

This can, how we say, be A Problem if your draw is something like Thief - Berserker - Ranger. It makes surviving Byblos quite unpleasant.

Thief - Berserker - Group 2 Fire Job's not that bad, because you can at least keep up the healing by having your Thieves toss out hi-potions (you did remember to farm hi-potions in the fire ship before the castle blew up, right?) while your Berserkers attempt to smash Byblos's face in.

Monk - Berserker - Group 2 Fire Job on the other hand... :negative:

I had Monk/Berserker at Byblos last season and it wasn't TOO bad. Did a bit of grinding and then just waited until I had a run of good luck with charging up and getting some crits (I think I just killed the berserker). Four knights at Byblos was way more annoying iirc.

Yeah, you can go into the ship still, at least as far as the front part; I forget if you can get to the room you fought LiquidFlame in again but you can absolutely get to the Defeater farming room.

How will getting a non-Galuf Freelancer from Pure Chaos interact with Fifth Job, which disallows using anything from Galuf's job? Since the Freelancer automatically gets the stat boosts from mastering a job, do you just avoid mastering Galuf's job?

You will never convince me that there is a better secondary ability for Berserker than Equip Harps. Sure, there are bigger boosts to Magic or to Agility but nothing else in the game that boosts both, and Berserkers really need the boost to both to get the most out of that Rune Axe & Gaia Hammer. Also a Berserker with the Apollo Harp is basically Shinryu's worst nightmare.

Sounds like the safe bet, though naturally it's kind of unavoidable if your Earth Crystal/Galuf job is something super quick to master like Geomancer or Dancer.

Keep in mind that Equip Rod also lets you equip staves. If you've got someone who doesn't have utility past being an itembot (say, a thief with nothing to steal) then you can slap the Healing Staff on them and save potions. (It also lets you use the Sage Staff for a source of Raise if you don't have a White Mage.)

If you define "worst" as "boring", sure. Freelancers even without secondary abilities are strong. Triple Crown strong, I don't know.

Don't they get literally zero abilities, though? The game just becomes "Hold A until you win".

It's Berserker with better targeting, at that point, only you can be confused. And since you don't master anything, don't its' stats stay fairly middling to low?

Any weapons and armor is nice but 4 Death Sickles is kind of a poor comparison to actually being able to hit weaknesses at full damage, or heal.

You also get rods. Full armor and weapons is a hell of a thing. You're going to have to think about some battles, and properly prepare for them, without a lot of room for error. It's not that hard but certainly not Hold A To Win easy, unless your A is on a pile of rods.

The Show Me How Its Done Challenge

Before the 20th of June, complete a run with the following jobs:
Wind: Knight
Water: Mystic Knight
Fire: Ranger
Earth: Dragoon

And I'll donate based on bosses defeated:
$5 per Exdeath (Dragonatrix, derra, FreeKillB, berenzen)
$10 per Shinryu (berenzen)
$10 per Omega (berenzen)
Max 10 defeats per boss

Running Total: $40

:toxx: me.

The Virgin Tree v. The Chad Butz

This was fun, quite nice for a no750 party. Doing a Brave Blade run was dumb, I know, but I don't get Knight very often. I will probably go back for Shinryu if I feel like grinding a few more levels first, Omega is more questionable.
