no. most cars now have hard plastic panels on the bottom though to help mileage. I suppose some could be lined with noise insulating felt on the inside.

the really critical bit though is that in every other car the seams of those panels are set up so that the panel closer to the front of the car overlaps the start of the panel closer to the rear. that way if you hit something it just slides past instead of digging into the seam and ripping it apart. it is super basic design.

iirc, your warranty is voided if you drive through too much water

how much is too much? well, it's not explicitly spelled out, and it's not like he got out and measured the puddle depth anyway. so you know Tesla will just draw the line at "if it damaged your car, it was too much, claim denied"

i'm pretty sure there's already been tesla forum threads posted here where they chide each other of using any kind of automated/mechanical car wash, because there's several ways for them to break the cars.

ofc i wouldn't expect the paint to hold up too well either

sounds like they need to take a page out of the Apple service manual and start adhering those little moisture sensitive stickers to the cars so when you take your busted car to the genius bar they can deny you service because the dots are red

let's trim that down a bit

quote:

The environment or an act of God, including, but not limited to, ... fire, water, ... and other environmental conditions

surely they wouldn't apply that to deny claims from puddle damage, though, right? right?

wrong

quote:

Hello all,

Apparently Tesla thinks that driving through a puddle is beyond the capability of the Model S and is an "insurance issue."

What do you think?

I drove through a deep puddle last Wednesday. What I think happened is that one of the plastic panels on the underside of the car was loose and the water got between the panel and the underside of the car. Once the panel started to peel the force of the water pushed it downward and backward so that it flipped backwards and took the bumper off with it. I called Tesla immediately and they sent a truck to take it to the auto body. After dragging their feet for the last six days I just got word that they will "not cover the repairs" and I need to call my insurance.

I understand most Tesla drivers are in California and do not see the same road conditions we see in New England. However, if the car is going make it in this market and other similar markets like the Midwest it needs to be able to go through a puddle without sustaining thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Has anyone else had an issue with this? Any advice on how to deal with Tesla?

Thanks to all for any help!

It's illegal obviously. There are explicit papers to sign in case your car has extremely odd technical limitations.

For example a BMW E46 M3 CSL comes with semi slick tires and you sign an explicit waver that says BMW will not be responsible for anything that happens when you drive the car on a wet road.

Dodge Charger Demons have a similar waver.

To my knowledge tesla does not do this. Therefore they can not legally refuse warranty for normal road usage.
