Pirate Radar posted:Ships without catapults have to be manually told to stop in order to crane the planes into the water (to be clear, having to stop is historical and realistic, I have no problem there) but also even that often doesn’t work because they forgot to test launching planes from ships without catapults. also cruisers WITH catapaults can't launch flotplanes

Apparently the explanation for this is that they bought the globe-map file from some resource and can’t edit the data without messing things up.

I had my brother in law, a GIS specialist, look at the CMANO map files and he noticed they came from an open source dataset from NASA. It's entirely likely these guys might be using the same pack. I'll have to dig into the map files and see if it can be tweaked.

A bit of poking around in the .dat files included with the demo suggests that starting in 1942 you’ll be able to have airships with radar if you want.

Panzeh posted:Do you know how many devastators flailed into Kido Butai and did nothing? The devastators were terrible planes, at least by 1942, and unlike the Swordfish at Trento, were often deployed in situations where very capable IJN naval fighters were trying to shoot them down; however, the real problem was with the plane as far as its lack of results sinking ships was the MK 13 torpedo. In fact, the early war version of the American submarine launched Mk 14 was terrible too. Both torpedoes ran too deep, their magnetic triggers didn’t work and at best caused early detonations, and their contact detonators so faulty they had an 80% dud rate and bounced harmlessly off the hulls of enemy ships. So really you cannot make a good comparison between the RN and her swordfish pilots and the American Devastators. On paper, while a poor plane by 1942 standards, the Devastator was a better and more capable aircraft and her crews well trained. Its just that they were used in high profile carrier battles where they were heavily interdicted by Japanese Zeros and had torpedos that either passed under their targets or bounced off the sides of their targets. Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far is a goddamn brutal game after getting used to Gateway to Caen, holy poo poo. All my pixel soldiers die so easily. It seems you really have to use smoke grenades constantly to advance into favourable positions. It's really loving cool and the campaign setup of branching outcomes has been perfect so far. I've played hundreds of hours of Total War games but this series might be even better. Any tips? My dudes are dying so fast :<

I've been having more success now that i throw smoke down in front of everything that might be a firing position. Those bridges are intact as hell and now there's three panzers on the other side of the bridge i didn't see before and british infantry squads don't have any integrated AT capability this game rules! fart_man_69 fucked around with this message at 04:45 on May 17, 2019 |

RTW2 seems uh, quite buggy. Land based air doesn't seem to work at all, the AI is even more about suicidally closing range with battle lines and still can't manage to maintain an orderly line which you'd think would be the most basic part of the game. Carriers at least seem to operate okay under AI control but it doesn't seem able to generate coherent strikes so it will pretty much get Midway'd every time. Finally scouting with planes is erm, very very unreliable because of the limited control the player has over it and bug with floatplanes. There was a screenshot of a war, which was "X and Y have gone to war, X lost the following ships, Y lost these. X won." I guess its not made it into release, but i may make it into a patch. I do love the new raider summary rather than clicking through 10 sub reports a turn. I also like trying to ad rader before its been researched and getting a message reading "Radar? what is that?" Not been able to try air ops yet. the weather is always against me!

I am utterly unsurprised that the main difference between RTW 1 and 2 is the introduction of a mechanic that is bugged and unfun even when it works.

If it’s the one I’m thinking of that was just somebody on the forums mocking up what that system would look like. I think the devs have said they don’t anticipate allowing AI nations to go to war.
