I've long had a theory that Iran has been bankrolling David Icke for a while - probably from some point in the mid-2000s, after his split from his second wife and the collapse of a lot of his business dealings likely put him in need of capital urgently.

His homebrewed TV station had a bunch of Press TV-connected personnel working with it, and he almost always goes light on/takes the side of the Iranian government, despite the fact that on the basis of his own theories they're just as much puppets of the Illuminati as any Western government (possibly more so), and he runs stories denouncing US aggression against Iran year-round even if nothing especially unusual is happening.

If you haven't seen it, I recommend Rod Serling's 1974/76/79 UFO documentary:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CJdUA8LQg0

It's nicely produced, and eerie in the way of all good Serling stuff.

Also I think it was recently claimed that some of the Holloman AFB footage was from the "real" incident, as a (say it with me now!), limited hang-out.

But yea its super easy to just make a claim and as long as its fits with someones world view, they'll buy it. If you can find a second hand copy, "The Devil's Web" by Patricia Pulling is a pretty decent first-hand presentation of what the Satanic Panic types tended to believe. Pulling's infamous as the Bothered About Dungeons & Dragons prime mover, but she believed in pretty much every other angle of the conspiracy theory and included it in her book (and in her entirely unqualified advisory role to various police departments, oops). I kind of think of her as the Satanic Panic version of David Icke; originates few conspiracy theories (if any), but amalgamates a whole bunch of pre-existing theories into one overarching worldview.

For similar reasons you probably want to look up "Michelle Remembers", second hand copies of which should be trivial to get because it sold like crazy back in its day and now I suspect a great many people are embarrassed about owning it. It is vile - the author basically directly admits to a whole host of breaches of professional ethics over the course of it, largely of the "do not bang your patients" variety - but it's the book which kicked off the whole Satanic Ritual Abuse craze, so if you're going to be doing Satanic Panic research you'll want to cover it.

Satanic Panic is something that will be endlessly facinated by, and it really is Qanon's grandfather. though it was a much more widely accepted belief than Q. I think that its one of the major reasons Evangelicals gained a lot of power in the 80s. They used this to force themselves into positions of power than used that to their advantage because everyone was worried they'd get fingered, not like classic Witch Trials.

Though again, my favorite people from it are the experts, especially the "former" satanists that just confirm every crazy belief these people have.

You can find tons of videos on youtube, but my favorite is Deception of a Generation which claims all the toys are cartoons of the 80s are Satanic because there's magic and levitation going on.

Notable for how they go out of the way to not actually depict the porn he's watching (obviously, because that'd make it hard for them to show it on lifetime) except for this one screenshot of a latex fetish website, because of course when the fetish is for people 100% covered in skintight rubber there's technically no nudity, but it still looks pretty tame aside from the costumes and you're left thinking "Jeez, mom, what are you afraid of? That your son and his future partners will end up smelling faintly of car tyres and talcum powder after a romantic evening?"

I did my thesis on the Satanic panic. Here's a play list of stuff I had for citations and presentations, but a lot of stuff keeps getting deleted:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxLMYB70S9DUM_LZ8eYaQFBsyOIbwQuxc

This is the best one, and was the highest rated "documentary" in tv history. Geraldo spends 2 hours interviewing people claiming to be Satanists, and has on a former FBI agent that claims there's a vast network of them operating in the shadows, he also claims a little girl's drawing of her Rainbow Brite oc is actually a drawing of the robes she wore when they made her murder babies.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKT4O0KCN1c

This is the 20/20 special mentioned earlier, in one shot you can see junk food packaging when they're interviewing kids, bribing kids to get them to say what the "therapist" wanted was common:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UQuwxBgpAg

This is another one that focuses on the real victims of the panic: in this case a family that ran a babysitting service and while the dad probably shouldn't have been around kids, he definitely wasn't raping them crucifixes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T6D-80U3FY
The case also made Janet Reno's career: https://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/...er-what-6364629

And here's a comedy special from the guy who kick started the whole thing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr9nkCZkhFA
Mike Warnke basically invented the "former Satanic high priest" subgenre of Evangelical scammers, and his book The Satan Seller was the first one to claim that there was a vast network of Satanists that secretly controlled the world. The book is hysterical and used copies are cheap. Somehow he was running the California chapter of the Church of Satan and supplying drugs to all of California while holding down a job at a burger joint and hanging out at the local college all day recruiting newbies. Oh, and Satanists are furious if you wake them up at 3am.

This channel has a bunch of documentaries from the era: (Edit, looks like the forum software wants to turn it into a video link, just type "Occult Demon Cassette" into youtube).

If you watch various talkshows from the era, you'll run into Zena LeVey and Michael Aquino a lot. This is an interview from a few years ago where Zena talks about growing up in the real Church of Satan and how she regrets defending them because by the 80s the edgy teens had moved on and all that was left was a bunch of manchildren, and by going on tv she accidentally revived it. Michael Aquino worked for the CIA so he pops up in a lot of conspiracies even today (and makes it hard to find good info about him).

In the Geraldo doc, he links Manson and Hitler to Satanism but doesn't elaborate. Not that it would be hard, a lot of edgelords who called themselves Satanists back then were really into Nazis and Manson.
I grew up in the rural South and it pretty much never died there. I was banned from reading Harry Potter at school or brining Pokemon merch (or anime in general, Japan isn't Christian so it must be demonic). They tried to expel a friend of mine in 8th grade because she got really into witches and loaned some dumb teen novel to the wrong person.
There's still people in jail over it because the prosecutors either played down the Satanic angle to get a conviction or their cases never got the publicity the West Memphis Three, or even Country Walk, did.
