Yeah, but you can call in resupply whenever you want, it's not peace walker where you were stuck with that many for the entire mission.

Urgh, I forgot about the degrading suppressors in this game - the only bad feature introduced in MGS3! Please tell me that there are some R&D options that negate this, so you go back to having MGS1+2 suppressors. :ohdear:

(Also, last night I found DD before stopping for the night. :3: I also abducted some A+ tier Spetsnaz commander I was meant to kill - he's currently in my brig. Hopefully I can convince him to join me, so I can have him aiding me in the field against his former allies)

There's a couple of weapons that are just innately silent, and also you can call in a supply drop that'll refill your suppressors. And some guns have better silencers on them, and you can eventually unlock weapon customization to use them on things other than the exact weapon your developed them on.

Hmm, OK that's interesting. So like, one of those is a welrod or something, I assume? That's interesting if so - I might need to get that ASAP. Since for the AR I don't mind a degrading suppressor as much, but I mean, if my silencer only lasts for a pistol mag, that's just gonna get on my nerves.
That's good to hear about the supply drops, though! So what, it'll just restock my ammo and give me a new suppressor? (I think I can only have one at a time, atm) Or do I need to manually go in and specify what I want dropped in?

You can upgrade your suppressor a few times to the point it’s either permanent or effectively permanent.

I like degrading suppressors and rarely deployed with the max level one. You already have so many stealth advantages, so it takes away the urge to just tranq everybody.

Yeah, I dunno, it just doesn't make any sense to me, really. I mean, Snake isn't using a pillow or a can stuffed with steel wool as a suppressor, after all!
...Although then again, maybe the DDs use a very cheap plastic suppressor, that doesn't stand up to the heat very well? :v: That might explain having to swap it out after firing-off a few rounds, heh

Suppressors that use wipes rather than baffles have to replace them routinely.

I thought that suppressors with decent baffles were fairly commonplace by the mid '80s, though? I could be wrong though - I'm hardly an expert.
Although actually, I suppose if the DDs are making their own anyway, they probably aren't using the most sophisticated tech available. So I guess that makes sense, in hindsight. (Especially since they're using captured frontline soldiers to make them, instead of bringing in people with experience manufacturing them! :v: )

They have some advantages. Wipes generally start out quieter than baffles (though this degrades a little with each shot fired) and the design, manufacture, and maintenance of a suppressor with wipes are simpler than one with baffles.

Now I'm reading about the history of silencers on Wikipedia and this sounds coooool

quote:

Silencers were regularly used by agents of the United States Office of Strategic Services, who favored the newly designed High Standard HDM .22 LR pistol during World War II. OSS Director William Joseph "Wild Bill" Donovan demonstrated the pistol for President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House. According to OSS research chief Stanley Lovell, Donovan, an old and trusted friend of the President, was waved into the Oval Office, where Roosevelt was dictating a letter. While Roosevelt finished his message, Donovan turned his back and fired ten shots into a sandbag he had brought with him, announced what he had done and handed the smoking gun to the astonished president.

in the FOB missions tab it says "PFs of equal grade". What determines "equal grade"? Most of the PFs in the listing have an espionage rank of around 60k, a score of around 10k, and a grade of one diamond while I'm around 14k rank, a score 118k, and grade of two diamonds. PF ranks appear to be all over the map and the grades vary from A+ all the way down to CCC- and poo poo.

I'm actually not into the multiplayer that much and just want to get high-rank research cheese weapons. Does it affect my "grade" for the purposes of matchmaking if I am winning weekly mock-battle league matches? I assume doing events counts somehow.

Hey, quick question. So, I pinched a jeep on a mission and drove it out of the mission area (since I don't have the fulton upgrade). I then got the 'mission complete' screen and some spray paint sounds.
So, what I'm wondering is, am I able to simply abandon the jeep and call in a new one the next time I come back to Afghanistan? (Also, what if it gets destroyed? Can I get a new one next mission, or will I have to capture another one?)

It's simply another vehicle in the game that happens to be painted your camo colors (customizable under one of the menus fyi, I like the dazzle stripes on the chopper). It's no different from requesting a vehicle drop or deploying with a vehicle at the start of a mission.

If circumstances permit, you should fulton it to your base when you're done with it, since you can deploy a vehicle out of your stockpile at the start of a mission. Vehicle/emplacement stockpiles also count towards your PF grade (which earns you PF points, which are one of the only ways to get top-ranked S++ soldiers, or instant supplies of materials/rare plants/etc). Or you can also sell vehicles/emplacements out of your stockpile for some quick GMP if you need (though it's a bad long-term move since you'll be swimming in GMP eventually). So the incentive is to fulton it.

If it gets destroyed or you need to abandon it, or you don't have the cargo fulton/wormhole fulton yet (you need a Transportation Specialist) then oh well, there will be plenty more. If you play it for a couple weeks and just fulton every vehicle you see, you should be rolling in basic vehicles like trucks/jeeps, have a decent supply of armored vehicles, and the only vehicles that I felt were semi-rare were walker gears (in part because I really didn't enjoy many of the missions walkers were in). Same for MGs and mortars... AA guns are a little rarer.

farming PF points to buy high-ranking soldiers, although of course any vehicles help with that, not just walkers

FOB invasion support deployments require specific types of vehicles and some of them will require walkers specifically. Also a few of the combat deployments I think.

or just sell them for GMP (although like I said that's not really ideal since vehicles do things for you that GMP can't and by the time you've progressed a little bit you will be swimming in GMP).

few more notes on saving money:

It is always cash-positive to fulton extract anything (and then sell it if applicable) if you have enough fultons to spare. Not hugely so for some of the animals or emplacements but at least by a little bit. Calling in a resupply costs you the same as when you deploy in the first place (including plants/minerals) so if you're short on fultons then it may not be worth calling a resupply just to get more fultons. Once you get a couple levels in fultons though, you can call a loadout change box, and swap from Level 5 down to Level 4 which will refill all your fultons, then next time you call for a level 5 fulton and it's full again. Much cheaper than calling a full resupply.

Note that this means the infinity bandana is by far the best item for free-roaming and just farming everything in sight, since you will never have to resupply ammo/fultons. You can use a really high-tier expensive loadout and only pay the cost once instead of every time you resupply. Even in late-game I feel icky about some of the loadouts that take thousands of diamonds or poo poo to deploy, but as long as you're not paying it once every couple minutes it's not too bad to just use it and go clear half of a play area.

You also pay the resupply cost (including plants/minerals) every time you return to mother base, so if you are really short on cash (or using an expensive high-tier loadout) you can un-equip almost all of your items, go wash up, then re-equip them before the mission.

Also, "return to ACC" has a similar mechanism. Calling the chopper costs a fixed amount of money (depending on how you have customized it). "Return to ACC" doesn't cost you anything. If you're hard up for cash, use "return to ACC".

It very heavily depends on the gun and the bullet it's firing. I'm not a gun person but from what I understand what makes a gunshot loud is the muzzle blast, action sound, and the bullet breaking the sound barrier. A silencer suppresses the first one by modifying the sound with baffles inside of the silencer itself which slow and cool the propellant down so that the energy is dispersed slower and over a longer period, ie, it's quieter.

That being said, "quieter" is still loud. A low caliber gun like a .22 revolver is still something like 160 decibels when firing, and a silencer only reduces that by something like 30 decibels or less.

An exceptionally quiet gun, the Welrod, makes something like 73 decibels. I'm not sure if it fires subsonic rounds or not, someone else could probably tell you. I'm not sure if there's quieter guns, but at the very least it's the quietest one that I know of.

For comparison, a jet engine is something like 155 decibels. A hair dryer or blender is around 85.

In summary: The story was probably apocryphal. :v:

Even still they're quite loud. It's more that it changes gunfire from something that is unmistakably gunfire from a mile away in anything short of of a major rainstorm, to something you might not pick out of ambient noise at a few hundred yards, and something less immediately recognizable as gunfire if you do hear it.

Supersonic ammo will always still be immediately obvious to anyone who knows what gunfire sounds like, because the supersonic crack of the bullet is still exactly the same. It is, however, harder to tell exactly where it came from, because normally if someone is shooting toward you, you hear the bullet's sonic boom, and that alerts your brain in time to hear the muzzle report and really hone in on where it came from.

The biggest benefit of suppressors is to the person using the firearm and everyone around them. It's a lot less obnoxious.
