It's quite possible to be a vegan without being obnoxious about it - a few years ago I moved in to a share house with a young couple and didn't realise they were vegans for about a week, until I offered to share some stew I'd made. You won't know someone's a vegan unless they tell you, so the only vegans you notice are the in-your-face type.

My experience in Japan was that nobody even knew the term for lactose or lactose intolerance (乳糖不耐症) but the supermarkets stocked plenty of lactose-free milk with labels like "milk for those with rumbling stomachs" (牛乳でお腹ゴロゴロする人へ). I guess it's not a big deal for them because generally Japanese adults don't consume milk in sufficient quantity to get the worst effects - even a completely intolerant adult should be able to stand a small cup of milk without cramping and diarrhea.

I asked a couple times but nobody I talked to had ever heard of lactose intolerance, they just thought having stomach trouble was what happens to everyone when consuming milk. Sure you fart a bunch but milk makes your boobs grow, so it's worth it!

A sudden hundred percent decrease in demand for milk? Cows only live like 20 years tops so as long as people stop drinking it over a period of time longer than that, whatever. Milk is great though and you can get raw milk super easy in China, so I'm not gonna stop drinking it at least. They can just sell it all to me I guess keep the cows busy and not dead.

Shadow0 posted:I remember my vegetarian friends struggled a lot in Japan. This happened a lot: It doesn't get interpreted as "cow"; the issue is misunderstanding of "a meat dish" versus "having meat in it". Like if you said in English "I think I want meat for dinner tonight" you wouldn't generally go and get a salad with a few bacon pieces in it. It has meat in it, but it's not "meat" if if you will. In context people are generally thinking that you have no idea at all what something is and are asking if it's a meat dish. If you can ask in Japanese specifically if there's any meat at all in something because you have moral objections to any consumption of meat *at all* they'll understand, and generally know, though since it's not a common thing to ask in Japan some waiters may not know offhand the specifics because they don't make food and it's not something they generally have in mind, unlike in other countries with more vegetarians.

The White Dragon posted:wow this sounds like it couldn't possibly go pear shaped funny he mentions it now. Inspired by recent events, I just finished reading a book called Deadliest Enemy: Our War Against Killer Germs by a former CDC guy. In it he describes an epidemic of debilitating diarrhea that afflicted a small community in rural Missouri. There was one guy who had it for something like 18 months, and he lost like 30 lb (as an old man) at first he was pooping so much. He couldn't go out and do anything. The CDC was never able to even determine what kind of infection it was, in fact they were never even able to confirm it WAS an infection. However the one thing everybody who got it had in common was that it turned out they were all surreptitiously buying raw milk from a single local dairy. When they shut down the illicit milk distributors the outbreak stopped. Just in case anyone was wondering why we pasteurize milk in the first place, there you go. Also the book was last revised in like 2018 and the author, Michael T. Osterholm, describes a epidemic planning scenario in which an air born virus appears and southern china before infecting the rest of the world and triggering mass ventilator shortages among other things. LOL, literally every professional saw coronavirus coming from a mile away. The only part he got wrong is that he thought the American President would be DIScouraging the public from trying weird and dangerous pseudoscientific cures, rather than promoting quack medicine from the Oval office.

Yeah, coronaviridae are well known for jumping out and killing people. Back when I was a real person and working in virology, in slow news months I'd just find someone to write up another "but when is the next one due?" piece. The unpredictability and potential severity meant that the topic never really got old. Just, politicians have this thing where they hate listening to doctors and scientists with integrity, because unless you get new evidence, it's difficult to negotiate with facts.

Dumb question, I asked my wife to buy “Pearl River” brand soy sauce @ giant Asian grocery (because my Chinese room mate 25 years ago swore by it) she came home with something indeed branded “Pearl river” but it is DARK DARK DARK, a little thick, and smells/tastes slightly smoky. Along with this, the soy flavor I’m used to is lacking, and it seems like I have to use a lot. So my stir fry & fried rice are incredibly dark appearance. Is smoked soy sauce a thing?

Probably, but what you got is dark soy sauce. Mostly used for coloring, usually you use a tiny bit of that along with regular light soy sauce. I like aged Kimlan soy sauce for a Chinese light soy.
