This video was recommended to me on youtube not so long ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxRB4sdbIcw Zdzislaw Beksinski's art makes way more sense now. Still freaky as poo poo, and I had no idea he also did photography. Also Nexpo came back and did a great deep dive and explanation of Local 58 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdVRyOX6S4A That real sleep one really fucks with my head if I follow the instructions, and he explains why. twistedmentat has a new favorite as of 02:02 on Apr 1, 2020 |

Just as everyone is getting used to T Rex with Feathers, they've decided that no, they didn't have them. Because larger animals would have feathers to keep themselves warm, and Rex's lived in warmer climates. Plus there have not been any indication of feathers in an rex skin imprints.

ToxicSlurpee posted:Usually the nastiest, killiest viruses don't evolve in whatever it is they're killing. This is why things like swine flu are so nasty; human flu doesn't want to kill you for exactly that reason so it usually doesn't unless you're dealing with some other issue. Mostly you'll just have a lovely few days or a week or two and then you'll be fine. Same with swine flu for pigs; it doesn't do much other than make them miserable for a while and then they're fine. I'm currently a long way behind reading some old threads and my new hobby is finding quotes that are scarily relevant. Have a warning from the past!

I'd say that's why corona has become so widespread. It really is not very dangerous to a healthy person, and it takes a while for symptoms to appear (if they do at all). Compare to something like ebola, which is far too deadly for its own good.

I fear anything that can kick your rear end more than the flu, which kills a fair number of people every year, ye gads. But yeah, a lot of REALLY bad diseases tend to be self-limiting. Someone who is just oozing all of their blood out is both very visibly unwell and probably not long for this world, so transmission opportunities are reduced. The nightmare scenario for a world-ending disease is something like 'has extremely long incubation period, highly contagious during incubation, causes irrepairable long-term damage, immune response doesn't confer immunity for any real length of time, doesn't respond to any medications', and Covid-19 is certainly trying its damnedest to meet the metrics even if, I think, it ultimately won't.

There's also the scenario that the vector for delivery is not human contact but through water or animal/insects, so like dysentery and bubonic plague. Though both of those are pretty easily delt with today because we understand how those spread. Though i think in the world we live in, if a waterborn illness appeared in a major metropolitan area, it would probably kill millions because the people in charge of fixing it would not want to spend the money and then chuds would demand its against their freedom to not drink water with a bacteria in it that makes your insides come out of your butt.

Plus only poors drink unfiltered tap water so who is going to pay to fix it? Not a totally hypothetical situation, btw. I lived in a small town of about 7,000 people that had a problem for years where during the spring run off the water supply would become contaminated with Beaver Fever. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giardiasis Upgrading the water treatment plant so it could prevent our pipes from filling with parasites would cost a million dollars. The town couldn't afford it and the province didn't care, so well-off folks drank bottled water and everybody else boiled it. We'd be under a boil water order for weeks at a time. And let me tell you, boiling 2 litres of water to make a jug of hot kool-aid was not a fun time. I think they finally did fixed it somehow, after more than 10 years of lovely springs. Of course Giardiasis doesn't kill people. It makes you have a real bad few weeks, but it won't kill you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJWksPWDKOc This is a very long video that uses experimental music to stimulate the descent into dementia. The music represents memories, and how they become utterly, irreparably tangled and confused as the mind loses it's grasp on reality. Maybe it's just me, but I find that idea terrifying. If you want the full effect, start from the beginning. Stage 4, a little over 2 hours in, is where it really gets hosed up.
