Did the kid have food in that bag? I'm no bearologist, but he probably should have emptied it out.

Dumping food for the bear trains the bear that humans provide food, meaning they will come after humans more, or go searching around human camps looking for food. If this happened in a US park at least, it means the bear would probably be killed.

Megillah Gorillah, you just failed your bearology exam. You're not a bearologist, and you never will be.

anatomi posted:The kid is handling it pretty good. I was taught to walk away slowly but surely, backwards if possible; maybe that's what the dad (?) is trying to encourage. The bear, unless hungry as hell, will bluff a charge or two before committing to anything serious (your death). In which case, keep calm and keep backing away to leave its territory. It's because he's dressed like Spiderman.

Milo and POTUS posted:The bears name is four and the kids name is E? not bad! also regarding bearchat, I was one of those people who believed Bears Can't Run Downhill until I looked it up due to that gif. Turns out bears run downhill just fuckin fine. I guess it's a good thing that despite growing up/spending a bunch of time in Bear Country, I've never been on the trail with an actual bear

I'm not sure if it was ever explained to me, though one thing I read when I was looking it up suggested the myth was because their front legs were shorter than their back legs, which somehow translated to "can't run downhill". I just thought it was that they were big and awkward and if they tried to run down a hill they'd stumble and end up as a bearvalanche.
