That's the wrong thing to do unless you're in desperation mode. Dumping food for the bear trains the bear that humans provide food, meaning they will come after humans more, or go searching around human camps looking for food. If this happened in a US park at least, it means the bear would probably be killed.

Just make a vid on tik tok and cross post to insta and you'll have dozens of kids dead within days. After the last "pee your pants in quarantine" challenge I've completely lost faith in humanity anyway

That wouldn't be the most unusual thing I've seen in SF.

The kid is handling it pretty good. I was taught to walk away slowly but surely, backwards if possible; maybe that's what the dad (?) is trying to encourage. The bear, unless hungry as hell, will bluff a charge or two before committing to anything serious (your death). In which case, keep calm and keep backing away to leave its territory.

In reality, most people including myself would poo poo their pants and/or run. That kid is brave.

It's because he's dressed like Spiderman.

also regarding bearchat, I was one of those people who believed Bears Can't Run Downhill until I looked it up due to that gif. Turns out bears run downhill just fuckin fine. I guess it's a good thing that despite growing up/spending a bunch of time in Bear Country, I've never been on the trail with an actual bear

Maybe it's just that I live in drop bear country so bears moving rapidly in a downward trajectory isn't strange but what is the logic behind they can't run downhill?

I'm not sure if it was ever explained to me, though one thing I read when I was looking it up suggested the myth was because their front legs were shorter than their back legs, which somehow translated to "can't run downhill". I just thought it was that they were big and awkward and if they tried to run down a hill they'd stumble and end up as a bearvalanche.
