China are the baddies for being pissbabies over what was a pretty innocuous thing ScoMo did. "Hey, lets have an international investigation into this Virus that seemed to come out of China." No question.

But ScoMo only did that to suck up to Trump, and make it look like he was one of the big boys in international relations and Australia is important, really we are.

China's tantrum response and over-reaction etc. is indeed sad, pathetic, and awful. But don't paint ScoMo as a shining knight fighting the good fight against Chinese oppression.

I don't care about the virtue or lack thereof of ScoMo and I think that trying to turn the discussion into a question of his moral character or fitness to lead is an attempt to distract from the substance of what he actually did and China's reaction to it.

The investigation could have been called for by anyone, regardless of their integrity, and the PRC would have cried about it just as hard. They're offended by the fact that another country would call their official word into question, not the unspoken motivations of the Australian PM. Your concern about him is legitimate, but it's not what the PRC is complaining about and thus is a derail from the conversation.

There shouldn't have been a need to call for an investigation. An investigation should have happened as a matter of protocol and science no different from investigating an air crash. Even if it came out of Xi's butthole nobody would have cared as finding the source, information to fight the virus is the goal, not to assign blame. By engaging in a cover up and loving over WHO they made it a problem. The truth would have set them free. China only have themselves to blame. Trump being Trump is immaterial.

We should still have an investigation to find the natural reservoir, figure out what happened, so we can prevent future outbreaks.

Imagine the Soviet Union acting like China with Chernobyl. Madness.

Yes China is pissed off at being called out.
But they are picking on Australia, because ScoMo was the first/loudest, (I think. I may be very wrong), to put their heads up and formally/officially call them out.
And ScoMo was so loud/quick to call for the inquiry, because he wanted brownie points with the US and Trump.

None of this excuses the tantrum, the fact that China actively withheld information from the world, and their own populace, also whilst actively threatening and bullying individuals and organizations trying to help.

We have friendly relations with Germany and I have never ever seen a Brit seem genuinely mad at Germany over the war, including grandparents who fought in it???

Even the utter dregs of the Daily Mail will gently mock them for being too organised, or as rivals for the sunbeds on a Spanish beach.

Where in our media are people going 'remember the Blitz never forget, 2000 years of history, Suez belongs to the Empire' etc?

Gonna second this - mother's background is so British she craps crumpets and pisses Pimms, but I've never heard anyone on her side badmouth the Deustch. The war's mostly talked about in a 'The latest and hopefully last of our neighbours that we fought against' fashion.

I guess it's pretty different than China's hurt feelings racism claims in that it was true, whereas racism isn't usually behind whatever China is complaining about.

The Soviets would have leveraged that angle more if it held nearly as much power as it does today. Contemporary ideas of racism and how they intersect with a social media-addicted society serve as a great interface of soft power. This opportunity simply didn't exist prior to the 1990s, the Soviets were never given the chance to use it.

If they're slighted by an extremely reasonable call for an international investigation into the origins of the virus then China is still the problem, and I'm also not sure why we're calling the aforementioned extremely reasonable call some sort of unprecedented insult on the sole basis that it aligned with what the US wanted.

This should clear up what happened. Australia going to bat for Trump is incorrect, if anything it was to get away from WH rear end hats. The EU was also making similar calls at the same time. China picked on Australia for being first, louder and big yet small enough to push around unlike the EU. Some argue Australia should have built up more international support beforehand which is debatable. OZ would have still being that same size target. Chinese pettiness would have played out the same, the disproportionate reaction is more than enough proof along with it's MO.

https://www.smh.com.au/world/asia/no-longer-a-joke-how-australia-s-covid-19-inquiry-campaign-won-the-day-20200520-p54uoa.html

An investigation has been agreed to, but the timetable for that is .

Just about any other country other than China would have welcomed a medical team to help out right from the start no different from any other humanitarian mission. China is the aberration.
