I just got his new video in my recommendations, which made me look for this thread. I've never watched his content or any of the poo poo from the people in his circles, so this is just yet another case of YT trying to force "popular/trending" content into people's feeds because The Algorithm demands it.

Moon Atari posted:Second is that I think (but can't prove with what is available) that it is more context specific than other factors in any of the popular personality models, and that better questions need to be designed and tested to account for this. Both my first problem and second are somewhat overcome and accounted for–but only in the far more advanced proprietary personality assessments rather than the weak-rear end academic ones. I favour Saville's Wave Personality and Professional Styles, which I believe still outperforms all other personality assessments on basically every validity measure. Hogan's Personality Inventory is also good in terms of having an insane amount of data to back it, but it is kind of outdated compared to Saville's. I looked at some of those Saville sample docs, and it gives me pause. I manage a bunch of really smart people, and I wonder if my management decisions would not be caged in by having the "knowledge" of one of these reports. However, what if, in fact, the reports would present me with novel information that might help me find better applications for talent? One idea that I was thinking about was doing demographic analysis and strategy with regard to ideas: Like, let's talk about our boy JP here. The ideas he espouses: Who is thinking them, what are the demographics, are more people coming into the fold, why to people leave, what gains converts, what are the weak points? What kind of counter programming can you send out against it? Having a major fascist scare in your mid-thirties makes you think about ways that bad ideas travel, and how you can beat them. Side note: I watched a few JP vids years ago. I liked the parts about cleaning your drat room, I can imagine a bunch of shut ins needing to hear that. Guess he turned into a chud or something. Anybody have any idea how many pills he was popping?

Hosting Bshap twice (more?) alone should tell you that he is infinitely worse.

However, what if, in fact, the reports would present me with novel information that might help me find better applications for talent? No personality, integrity or attitudinal test should be used as the primary selection criteria (in that context they are best used to provide predictive validity gains to other selection methods). If you were to be presented with any of these instruments by a registered organisational psychologist they will likely be pretty strict in how they present the information to you and what it can be used for vs what could get you (and them) sued. If you receive it from a management consultant (including those who have the education of but have not registered as org psychs) they will be decidedly less ethically rigid. Uses when you aren't recruiting (when you have already determined all test candidates are valuable to you): a whole bunch of possible uses in leadership development and self-directed personal development. Literally just reading my own test results helped me. Beyond identifying weak areas and strengths it also lists "talent/motivation splits" for each. Just the basic concept of that kind of helps to think about how you have been applying yourself and what you want out of life/your career. Can help with team composition, as in grouping people that compensate for each others weaknesses. Probably the best application is in self-managing teams, or in horizontal project teams where job roles are untitled, unclear or self imposed. Everyone shares their results and collectively decides what roles they would be best off occupying, and should give each other insight into each other for less conflict. Ethically requires everyone is willing and not coerced to share and that the purpose and uses of the info are disclosed before the testing even takes place. Other than that you can actually use it without even doing any testing. If you have recruitment decisions to make you can use the framework just to help decide what sort of traits you want from the person who will fit the role, since people usually go into that process without even a vague idea. Have yourself and relevant managers sit and brainstorm/vote a set number of "most important" traits, "secondary/reinforcing" traits, and weaknesses. Then use that info to help design questions for your structured interview. Having said all that and anticipating the grifter comments: I trained in this but barely ever practiced as an org psych (and only in safety culture and communication training, where this stuff is not applicable). I work in not-for-profit intellectual disability support so have no career or financial incentive to advocate for this beyond answering a question about personality tests and follow up questions after it. Zeinin posted:One idea that I was thinking about was doing demographic analysis and strategy with regard to ideas: Like, let's talk about our boy JP here. What kind of counter programming can you send out against it? Outside my specialisation so I'm pretty vague, but during my honours placement there was a lab attached to mine focusing on basically exactly what you are talking about. Research on various attitudinal underpinnings that predict ideology and the political split on any particular issue. Stuff about political affiliation corresponding to which essentially universal value is more important to you than another when the two conflict. Personality does also contribute (assessed using the academic models rather than the proprietary ones that build on them). Focus at the time was on coming up with better ways to counter vaccine and climate change denial, but now there is probably a bunch of other bullshit to deal with. As for counter-programming: again, outside of my area except for the specific topic of trying to correct misinformation. If you have journal access the 2020 version of Lewandowsky and Ecker's 'Debunking Handbook' is going to be released soon, and it has some good advise in there that could be applied to broader counter-programming efforts. If you follow the reference trail from that paper you might eventually find my own undergrad research, which somehow has accidentally gained some amount of societal relevance since 2016 despite being boring and not at all what I wanted to be involved in at the time.

Collapsing Farts posted:I didn't read this thread, as per the Goon tradition, His popularity came about because he whined about trans people being added to an already existing workplace harrasment bill that covered a host of other minorities. According to him this meant all the trans people are coming to destroy your jobs because you misgendered them once, instead of the reality where if you're a bullying piece of poo poo who deliberately and consistently misgender a trans coworker you deserve to lose your job like any other workplace bully. He sells generic self-help garbage in an alt-right wrapper. Typical Tony Robbins poo poo but with a heaping of "This means you additionally shouldn't care about or do anything progressive." He purports to care about "rationality" and "logic" but like most people who push that inane self-aggrandizing bullshit it just means he ignores the medical and scientific consensus on trans people and thinks people should instead force the government and society to be beholden to their middleschool health class comprehension of human reproductive bio while ignoring every single shred of evidence that proves them wrong. He complains about "PC culture" and other such dogwhistles like "cultural Marxism" because like most bigots he believes freedom of speech that degrades minorities is more important than the rights of those minorities to speak out or be protected in society. Essentially he provided the alt-right with a clear blueprint on how to make intellectual laziness and stagnant mental development seem "smart." He is typical anti-academia despite being a professor, he whines about universities being breeding grounds for "radical leftist thought" despite the fact that they're bland liberalism at most, while his disciples regularly ignore the irony that this foppish, intellectually round-about knob with questionable ability to articulate his superficial beliefs is the epitome of the vacuous meandering academic preening they hate so much. He's pulled the "minorities are plagued by an attitude of victimhood" card which as we all know is just thinly veiled bigotry essentially labeling oppressed people whiners and crybabies for daring to speak out, even though speaking out, performing activism, and attempting to politically alter oppressive systems is the opposite of laziness. Basically just believing that if he whines about how oppressed white people are it's a just cause, but when anyone else does it, it's a "victimhood complex." In the meantime he sells his generic self-help drivel that contradicts virtually everything he says or how he lives his life because it asserts typical right-wing self-sustainability and conformist self-responsibility, despite being written by a drug addicted moron who eats like a loving eight year old who hates vegetables and lives in filth. He claims women have not been oppressed throughout history, believes that Islamophobia is a "fascist" phrase (who the gently caress even knows where he got that from), consistently denies the reality of arbitrary gender roles and the gender/sex dichotomy (which again, is him disagreeing with experts in fields he has zero experience or education in), and last but not least all of this is motivated by his milksop, weak-rear end Christian bent which is the true source of his beliefs. His intellectual posturing and nonstop incompetent "debates" are essentially nothing but a man who used his academic experience and knowledge of rhetoric to purport that his mediocre right wing ideals are actually born of an understanding of "reality," birthed from practicality and science, rather than the fact that he's just a boring rear end typical religious bigot who learned how to exploit complete and total gullible idiots like Mnoba into thinking their utterly facile moral cowardice and total social uselessness is somehow a strength. He's nothing but a figurehead who exists to provide the illusion to alt-right simpletons that their brainless beliefs they've likely held the majority of their lives were gained from careful consideration of the world, versus the reality where right-wing people are basically infants with extremely lacking theory of mind and a total, blithering incomprehension of the complexity of human nature and social structures.

I can easily see it boosting the profile of a popular youtuber who took a break and came back, in an attempt to both reengage the fans and get the content creator to think it's worth going back to the content mines to make 6 videos per week. Youtube is awful and sadly even the gov't anti-trust won't help fix this, because the problem is people handing over decisions with moral consequences to a bit of computer code and then absolving themselves of responsibility.
