Setsuka is dressed as an oiran (essentially the cream of the crop among courtesans in Japan a few centuries back) The kimono, the half-exposed cleavage, the bandage wrappings are very common fixtures of that style. The only thing she's missing is a tatoo.

I am not remotely surprised. The youtube algorithm is basically set up where it WANTS to send you down a rabbit hole so you spend as much time as possible watching youtube videos, and previously basically the most effective rabbit hole was right wing conspiracy theories. Having a different rabbit hole to send you down instead is genuinely going to lead to a decrease in the amount of people becoming alt-right nutjobs.

Vtubers produce long-form content, which results in more watch time, which feeds the algorithm better.

Do longer videos result in more watch time overall, though? Why would an hour-long stream necessarily perform better than 12 different 5-minute clips? If anything, you'd expect the optimal length to vary dramatically depending on the type of video. FractalSandwich fucked around with this message at 06:21 on Jan 14, 2021 |

Watch time goes per video, so a single long video does do better than a bunch of smaller videos.

the algorithm is more complicated than just watch time, (but a lot of this is based off of things youtube has said in the past about how the algorithm works rather than like, having secret knowledge) and includes everything from "how many people click on it after seeing it" to "is it getting a lot of engagement/likes dislikes, comments etc, comments in a live stream may count for this? Along with how frequent a channel uploads (youtube usually wants like, a video or two a day, everyday, but not like 10 videos a day because that's too much). Then, the algorithm tries to give you something similar to what you watched, but usually from another creator. So combined generally daily or better uploads, with relatively good engagement (especially if stream comments actually count), a sizable amount of clicks/viewers and the fact that the algorithm can then send you off to a clip or another vtuber afterwards vtubers are kinda accidently the perfect storm for how we're pretty sure the algorithm works atm. Knowing youtube though, they'll change it in like 2 weeks to something new and dumb

The danger is more the vtuber hole linking to the anime hole which then provides another potential link to the alt-right hole. It’s holes all the way down really.

FractalSandwich posted:I dunno about that. There's enough stuff on Youtube to make a rabbit hole out of anything someone might be interested in, not just conspiracy theories and anime girls playing video games. What makes vtubers different from cooking, or sport, or retro electronics, or British panel shows, or anything else? Different types of content can push you into different types of watching habits, and as watching habits go vtubers are actually pretty similar to the watching habits a lot of people in the alt right rabbit hole develop, where people basically have something playing on youtube in the background All The Time. The leading theory I've seen for the youtube algorithm's tendency to basically push people into the alt right is that the algorithm is trying to proactively push people into becoming People Who Have Something Playing In The Background At All Times and the alt right stuff is great for that. But Vtubers are also great for that, so the algorithm is now pushing as many people as possible towards Vtubers now, if we're lucky including people that it would have been pushing towards alt right stuff instead.
