Believe me, the typical things served at Americanized chinese restaurant are totally distasteful, bordering on offensive, to my very Chinese wife, even the one run by my very Chinese next door neighbors, who we're friends with. There's an American model for what to serve at a chinese restaurant, and it's not very representative.

That's not universal, there's restaurants she likes, especially where they focus on a regional cuisine. A few years ago, we even lived next to another neighbor who ran an amazing restaurant, but she moved away and the new owner made her restaurant into an interchangeable "pan-asian" hipster restaurant. It was sad.

And we have MSG in the house, but pretty much only because my wife wanted me to replicate a KFC sandwich they make in China.

Sino-american cuisine is a land of contrasts

AITA for asking an overweight woman if she needed help at the gym?

quote:

My gym is pretty small so I usually recognize the people there but this morning, I saw an overweight woman that I've never seen before. I've seen a lot of posts on Reddit about fat people feeling bad at the gyms and that people are there making fun of them so I wanted to be friendly and encouraging.

I walked up to her while she's setting up the treadmill and asked if she needed help with anything and that I'm around. I was really friendly but she was immediately annoyed at me and was all "do I look like I need help". I was surprised because I really just had good intentions and she was acting like I was being a dick. I told her that I just hadn't seen her there before and that I didn't mean anything by it. She very nastily said sarcastically that she thinks she can figure out the treadmill. I joked, "Could have fooled me" and walked away before she could respond.

I know it wasn't a very nice thing to say but she definitely started being nasty to me first when I was clearly just trying to be a good guy. I told my girlfriend when I got home and she said she was proud that I tried to help her and that she did sound rude but that I shouldn't have said what I said. I personally think she kind of deserved it but I don't want to be an rear end in a top hat.

I’m wondering what “help” could he have possibly provided with a treadmill. It’s a treadmill, they’re straightforward! They have clearly labeled buttons for speed and incline, a screen with text, and even a quick start button if you want to keep it super simple.

My brother has unfortunately succumbed to conspiracy of the internet. He used to do some kind of criminal activity, but then used that money to start trading stocks and options. He's successful with this.

Last year, I got an apartment in my name for him. He paid every but stopped in January. I was away in Kansas. I told him I needed my rent once I returned and when I came back he started to accuse me of being a bot. He said I was stuck in the matrix and until I stopped my current path (student, working for the baby eater Jeff bezos as a software engineer, doing clinical trials for money) he would with hold my money. He claims I'm in my "root chakra" and until I let go of the need for money, I will continue lacking respect for myself...

While I was in kansas, he was also arrested and put in jail.(his first time) I got him a lawyer for 7k. I never directly spoke to him but my mother said that he said he'd pay me back. Of course now he's saying he won't pay me back until I "wake up".

He's also stolen my property that was at my mom's house (a safe that had a no money in it, just a personal item).

I'm just wondering is there anything legal I can do to get the over 12k+ he owes me.

My brother (20M) smokes weed. Yeah, not bad, but yesterday he called my mom at 2am to pick him up about a half mile away (in a gated community). He was pacing and disoriented. Usually he has no issue with walking but obviously the weed he took was laced with poo poo (weed should calm you down and he wasn't calm).

Also, over the past few years he's been getting deep into conspiracy. He's a vegan (I'm veg too so not inherently bad) but believes in an alkaline diet. He believes in astral projection, different realms, black ppl being extraterrestrial, numerology, etc. He believes he goes to the astral plains to get true knowledge. He calls ppl who go to work bots and he trades stocks to make money. He's successful with that. However because I don't believe what he's saying (according to him "I don't want to believe ") he stopped paying rent for an apartment I got in my name for him. Also he was in jail (for speeding "evading police" bullshit honestly) and I got him a lawyer for 7k. He wont pay me back until I believe the bullshit he believes. He has the ability to pay me back but won't until I "wake up".

Any suggestions on how I can help my brother before he's too far gone- especially with the drug?

Not that this in any way excuses the lady, I'm just not surprised that an office drone didn't act cognizant of the fact that they were illegally sharing confidential information.
I work for two colleges (both part-time jobs) and every year each one makes me do the same employee training about student privacy. I don't know if every college does this but it's quite possible. Men, meanwhile, can bumble their way through Pornhub and watch videos of girls deep throating until tears run down their faces, or girls getting railed by six black guys, and never take a moment to think about why that appeals to them. The lack of self-reflection (except to think, in an abstract way, that the women in those videos are dumb whores who should be ashamed of themselves) leads to doublethink like you describe.
The amount of "choke on my dick, bitch" straight porn is just depressing. It should be a small niche thing for people with that kink. Meanwhile nice wholesome videos of ladies mashing birthday cakes with their bottoms are thin on the ground indeed.

Yeah I had a vague idea about storing some information in a database that (in some walled off sections that I would never ever see) contained student data, and before I could ask if said database could even do the thing I wanted, I got a strong talking-to about FERPA and how not to gently caress with it. I mean, there is a term for re-imported food (and it may just be "re-imported"): dishes that were copied from another country's cuisine and then liked enough by the original country to bring back over in their new form. It's not even just commercialized versions of the dishes. Sometimes it's just another country's take on them or adapted to different regions of the world. Like I expect Portugal to have Japanese restaurants serving tempura.

On a visit to NYC we went to where there are two well-known dim sum restaurants across from each other. One was the "more traditional" one where you got served from trolleys. The other made your meal to order. Both had lines to get in. However in line for the trolley restaurant there were white tourists whereas in line for the other were actual Chinese people. So we chose the latter and I had some of the best shredded turnip I will probably ever have.

That said I am usually very much into authenticity because it's an experience and you get exposed to new ingredients. If given the choice between a delicious burrito bar run by white hipsters and an authentic Mexican restaurant I'd probably chose the latter.

e: Exception is pho soup where I'm at. The local Vietnamese population came mostly from the north of Vietnam and their version of pho is bland. Hipsters making the southern version are preferable.

The hipster place will give you a taco sized burrito for $10, while the stand behind a gas station run by a lady from Guatemala who understands just enough english to sell a burrito will give you one three times the size for like five bucks.

And FWIW, there is no real evidence it causes any harm to anyone, with a lot of research trying to find an effect.

I was doing everything in my power to get him the best lawyer and the shortest sentence. I did everything to make sure he was as comfortable as possible in there.

I had to get into his phone so his bank would release funds to pay his lawyer. When I told him this, he told me he “forgot” his passcode. I knew something was up immediately. I said “are you sure?” And he said yes.

I was able to get into his phone and found over 100 messages to over 20 different women. He had sent all of them while he was drunk (he’s a bartender). Things like “want your mouth on my d*ck”, “miss you babe”, lots of 🔥 emojis. Plus a super cute little video of some random girl touching herself.

I thought that was it, except I found a text of him telling a girl he would buy her plan b. This was last year, about 3 weeks after we had decided to be exclusive.

Also found out his POS friend tried to encourage him to hook up with his ex in February. I have some messages this friend wouldn’t want his own girlfriend to see and wow, am I tempted to share them.

He is very remorseful. Crying, begging, telling me he’s willing to do whatever he needs to make it right. He wants to cut off all his friends that encourage him to drink heavily and especially this one who encouraged him to cheat. Told me he will go to rehab and therapy. Told me he will move to a different city with me if I want since I’ve been wanting to move for a while.

I just don’t know what to do. I’m torn because they were only messages and the sex was when we were very new, but he lied. Again and again.

His original charge a few years ago was DUI intoxication assault. His friend was injured in a car wreck they had.
