it was many decades later that i learned the truth of it, that ike was her lover and not related at all.
the best verse that they never taught me in school is this:

out on the prairie one starry night
ike broke out the whiskey and betsy got tight
she laughed and she sang
and she danced o'er the plain
and showed her bare arse to the whole wagon train

You don't know they're not related. Unless you met the chap who wrote it I guess.

Last time I was back home I think they were $1.33 now. They still use the original mechanical registers that spit out half dollar coins as change.

I bet there are a bunch of old dudes who have their $X.49 order ready multiple times a week hoping to luck into a valuable coin.

Its either boiled or fried in the midwest which gives it a sweaty appearance. The Great Depression killed cooking skills for several generations.

i figure this counts as Americana because it's the Dutch interpretation of tex mex food, which is distinctly American.

Now, everything in that photo except the tomatoes can easily come from a jar or a can. The tomato is also served with minimal preparation, which is also a very American thing to do. The customer may have specifically asked for NO CILANTRO, in which case the cilantro makes sense.

Depending on what chain you went to, your mileage may vary.

There's a massive squeeze right now for grocery stores between high end retailers (whole foods, etc), subscription stores (costco/sam's club), and all the dollar stores. Some of the grocery chains end up buying only what's left after the first two take their pick, which sometimes leaves them with really sad produce when the growing season is not in its prime.
