Just not in the "we saved the day" sense, but in the "we avoided most of the war came out in a stronger position in the end" sense

Hot Karl Marx posted:this was "trending" on canadian twitter There's about one of these among the Canadian news media giants every couple of months. They are always super long and boring and obviously written for an audience in the dozens to be brought up in Parliament. It's the sort of stuff that belongs in some niche magazine for neolibs, but print media for that sort of stuff is dead in Canada so you end up finding it stuffed in between celeb news. Trends on Twitter even though the engagement on them is really poor. I WONDER WHY.

Canadian Twitter had that article about mennonites living in Xinjiang trending all day the other week even though the only tweets I could find at all commenting on it was someone pointing out that the mennonites in question had a history of loony poo poo and the articles byline also wrote for epoch times

I'm not sure what having 4 million teens removed from the economy and wider society is going to do for anyone. Thankfully the NYT opinion board hasn't made that point either, just that going Clockwork Orange with words like Civics and Social Norms flashed before these youths seems very critical.

You can tell that they have no loving clue what they're talking about when they start banging on about how vets look back on their years of involuntary service in Vietnam with fondness. Yeah dude, my dad tried to unionize his workplace, lost the vote, and then got shitcanned by his boss for being an organizer and was immediately drafted into the Army and sent off to Vietnam. Nothing but fond loving memories there.

i checked out that essay they cite as their case for national service it's a pre-WWI screed about how war is necessary for humans to reach their full potential, and that strife and conflict are necessary to provide the motivation for humans to engage in unpleasant labor without silly and unrealistic things like "high wages" or "decent working conditions" it's a very late-Victorian piece claiming that although war is horrible and awful, only harsh military discipline or a deeply patriotic fervor are capable of motivating people to contribute to society, so pacifists need to push for an entity that emulates the virtues of militarist culture in order to prevent the inferior classes from degenerating and stimulate the spiritual energies of the nation lol that the NYT is citing that with only a brief note about how the essay's focus on "manly virtues" and its constant railing against "cosmopolitan industrialism" is outdated
