i'll actually stan for saw because it was a good idea, executed well, and it's actually not that gory/bad but then everything it inspired/spawned was really, really bad and ruined horror movies for me

i like that the guy from dave's killer bread was open and honest about killing people but then sort of went vehicular homicide mode with a giant truck after a meth bender and he'd totally redeemed himself, the bread is pretty good

i thought wolf creek and haute tension were both pretty good though. wolf creek specifically had Victim A in a position where they were hiding or trying to rescue Victim B or something, and the bad guy was being evil to Victim B. They made the whole sequence actually _scary_ - there was no undercurrent of voyeurism or enjoyment that made so many of those movies absolutely disgusting. you were very much there _with_ Victim A like, i'm still not gonna go back and watch it 10 years later or whatever 'cause i dont like that kind of violence at all these days. but at least wolf creek showed that there was something TO the subgenre qua horror rather than a mondo-style thing that's just for people who enjoy watching others get hurt (which is exactly how hostel et al felt to me)
