--------------------INTRODUCTION--------------------

MGSV GROUND ZEROES / MGSV THE PHANTOM PAIN is a two-part stealth-based action/adventure game for PS3, XBOX 360, PS4, and XBOX ONE. It is directed by game designer Hideo Kojima, developed by Kojima Productions (KojiPro) and produced by Konami. It is the first game by KojiPro to utilize their original "FOX Engine".

The game's lead character is Snake, perhaps best known as Big Boss. MGSV takes place between the events of the games Peace Walker (1974) and Metal Gear (1995). This game (along with Snake Eater, Portable Ops, and Peace Walker) tells the story of Big Boss, who was presented as the villain of the original Metal Gear game, and his rise to power as the leader of the independent nation of warriors called "Outer Heaven" before his defeat at the hands of his clone, Solid Snake.

It is still unclear exactly why the two advertised portions of the game are separated. The prologue (Ground Zeroes) is set in 1975, shortly after Peace Walker. The rest of the game (The Phantom Pain) takes place after Big Boss (now called "Punished Snake") wakes from a nine-year coma with a missing left arm and a "horn" of debris and bone in his forehead. Although they are to be released separately, it is now clear that Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain are "both MGSV".

--------------------FIRST IMPRESSIONS--------------------

From "FOX", two phantoms were born. Early looks at the game came from the teaser trailers. "Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes" was publicly announced at PAX Prime 2012 (Penny Arcade Expo) in September of 2012, and a trailer for "The Phantom Pain" was shown during the Spike TV Video Game Awards in December of 2012. The Ground Zeroes trailer sparked debates over Snake's age and hair colour, and speculation about strange light patterns that move across the screen when the gameplay moves from one area to another. When asked at PAX if Ground Zeroes was our first look at MGS5, Kojima and assistant producer Sean Eyestone responded "We're not going to say it's five just yet but we are going to say it's a prologue."

"The Phantom Pain" was allegedly an unrelated game produced by unknown Swedish company Moby Dick Studio and directed by Joakim Mogren. 'Joakim' being an anagram of 'Kojima' and 'Mogren' containing the word 'ogre', a word previously used in reference to a future Kojima project, led fans to examine the trailer in great detail. Very quickly, enough similarities were noticed to conclude that "The Phantom Pain" was related to the Metal Gear Solid series. The Phantom Pain's title screen also had the words "Metal Gear Solid V" hidden in the negative space created by the apparent glitches in the text. The trailer for "The Phantom Pain" showed what looked like Snake with a prosthetic left arm, a person standing amidst flames, a small floating person, and a giant flying whale on fire. There was a flurry of wild speculation during the month of December and then months of practical media silence.

In late March, after some amusing rusing in collaboration with GameTrailers' Geoff Keighley, the official announcement was made at the Game Developers Conference that the two games were one and that the official title was "METAL GEAR SOLID V THE PHANTOM PAIN". On April 1, 2013, David Hayter made an announcement online that he would not be returning as the voice of Snake. (While there is a strong indication that this is legitimate, there still remains the possibility that it is a trick.) At the Konami pre-E3 show in June, the official announcement was made that Hayter would be replaced by Hollywood actor Kiefer Sutherland, and that the game would carry the themes of RACE and REVENGE.

At E3, the new trailer was launched, revealing the game's theme song "Sins of the Father" sung by Donna Burke, who also provided vocals for Peace Walker's theme "Heavens Divide". The new trailer also showcased many controversial elements, featuring shock torture, waterboarding, explicit gore, and children being used as soldiers. It wasn't until September when Kojima acknowledged that the characters were designed to be more sexy, that many began to voice their concern about the content of the trailer. The choice of wardrobe for the female sniper, Quiet, faced harsh criticism which may very well have been the reason for the closure of the previous MGSV thread.

At the Tokyo Game Show, the gameplay demo of Ground Zeroes (originally created for the opening of KojiPro's L.A. Studio) was unveiled. Spectators of the L.A. Studio demonstration shared their thoughts with games news sites and described the game as being a notable departure from the gameplay of other installments of the series. It included a tagging system, a visual overlay on the screen to represent damage, regenerating health, and a somewhat subdued heads-up-display.

For the launch of Sony's PS4 console Kojima revealed Sony-Exclusive content in Ground Zeroes, available on both PS3 and PS4. The "Deja Vu" Mission shows a re-skin of Snake and other characters, made to look like the low-polygon models of the first Solid game. Snow is falling, and both the DARPA Chief and Psycho Mantis are shown near the end of the trailer.

Also at this time, their updated website was launched and a release date of Spring 2014 was confirmed for Ground Zeroes. No date has been announced for the release of The Phantom Pain.

--------------------CHARACTERS--------------------

Big Boss / Punished Snake (Kiefer Sutherland)
The player character in the prequel games, but first portrayed as the villain in the original Metal Gear. Since being forced to fight his friend and mentor, The Boss, he has struggled to find meaning and purpose in his life as a warrior. He has thrown away any attachment to nations or ideologies, convinced that war itself is his reason to fight. He is passionate, naive, has an unorthodox love for cardboard, and still believes in Santa Claus.

Kazuhira Miller (Robin Atkin Downes)
Snake's partner in crime and subcommander of MSF. Wears very stylish aviator sunglasses. He met Snake two short years before the events of Peace Walker, but they have become close comrades. Together they build MSF from a small mercenary group with a beach-house into a force to be reckoned with on the world's stage. He enjoys curry, music, and long walks on the beach. By the end of the promotional material, he is missing his right arm and left foot.

Skull Face (James Horan)
The commander of the soldiers wearing XOF patches in the GZ trailer and raiding the hospital in TPP. His entire head is covered in what seems to be scarred flesh. He carries a Winchester 1887 (with an antler stock) on his right hip and gives a walkman to Chico in his cell. Could this man without a face be the character in the series famous for having no face?

Huey Emmerich (Christopher Randolph)
Driven by his paraplegia, he is a designer of bipedal robots. He worked with Hot Coldman in Peace Walker under the impression that the project would be a peaceful means of deterrence. He joined Big Boss' MSF after being pushed down the stairs by Coldman. He is romantically infatuated with the AI designer Strangelove and is the father of Otacon. In MGSV, he is shown with a robotic exoskeleton on his legs that allow him to walk. (But not swim.)

Chico Libre (Antony Del Rio)
Child soldier of the Nicaraguan Sandinistas. Joined MSF with his sister, Amanda, after being abducted by the Peace Sentinels and rescued by Snake. He is fascinated by cryptids (UMA's) and admires Snake, who reminds him of Che Guevara. In the Ground Zeroes trailer, he has yet again been abducted and awaits rescue from his cell. We don't know why he plugs headphones into his chest.

Pacifica Ocean (Tara Strong)
A young woman who worked with the entity known as Cipher. Paz was recovered by a Belizean fisherman who found her drifting in the Caribbean after falling from Mother Base in Peace Walker. She is held prisoner with Chico at Camp Omega, an American Black Site in Cuba. Due to her persona in Peace Walker being an act as part of her mission for Cipher, not much is known about her true nature. During her time with MSF, she had a pet cat named "Nuke". She spilled her guts.

Ishmael (Kiefer Sutherland)
A fellow patient shown in the Phantom Pain trailer helping Snake escape the raid of the hospital. His fate is unknown, as he was in the vehicle with Snake during the crash shown in the trailer. His face is almost completely concealed by bandages. The character's voice sounds like Kiefer Sutherland, despite the announcement that he voices Snake. Please take note of his buttocks, visible through the loose hospital gown.

Quiet (Stefanie Joosten)
A sniper who cannot speak. She is shown being subjected to shock torture by Ocelot and a soldier in the E3 trailer. Some skin on her face was shown changing pigment, but no explanation has been provided.

Code Talker (Jay Tavare)
A Navajo code talker, the character said to be over 100 years old.

Eli (...)
A surly looking kid with an outfit somewhat reminiscent of Ocelot's GRU uniform. He is shown with a conch shell on his lap (a reference to Lord of the Flies) The general consensus is that we think he is a young Liquid Snake.

Ocelot (Troy Baker)
Shown helping Snake escape the hospital on horseback, then later escorting him to the beginning of his mission in Afghanistan. He tells a man with one eye to use binoculars.

The Metal Gear series focuses on various characters with the codename 'Snake' who undertake incredible solo sneaking missions, usually to prevent some sort of nuclear catastrophe. The title Metal Gear comes from the name of the giant robots with nuclear launch capabilities who are portrayed in the series as the ultimate threat to the world as we know it. The series carries itself with a strange blend of seriousness and humour. I think the best description I've heard of Metal Gear is that Snake is the ultimate action figure with the best accessories and the game world is the whole playset. (This is slightly rephrased from a post by Wikipedia Brown, whose eye-bulging avatar always makes me very uncomforable.) The games are designed to give the player a variety of options as to how they deal with an obstacle. Furthermore, lethal action is usually entirely optional - 2, 3, POOPS, 4, and PW can be played with no kills.

The series takes place in a world caught in a war between two mysterious groups: The Patriots and Outer Heaven. The player almost always assumes the role of a character who is somehow being manipulated by the prevailing system of control . This was made explicit in MGS2 when, ironically, Raiden was unsure if he was experiencing the real world or a virtual reality. The whole series seems to share the view of Private Joker in Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket". A peace sign button on his body armour and the words "Born To Kill" on his helmet. "I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man, sir."

On that note, Hideo Kojima's Twitter profile says that 70% of his body is made of movies. The same is true of Metal Gear. Not only has the series been criticized for being very cutscene-heavy, but it is also a Lucas/Tarantino-esque montage of many sci-fi and action films. Snake himself is James Bond, John Rambo, Kyle Reese, and Snake Plissken combined into one. The series also emphasizes the idea that history repeats itself. Some characters actually exploit repeating themes within the timeline to shape the outcome of certain events.

There are two main generations in the series: old and new. The new follows the same general path of the old, with the notable change from a supernatural basis to a technological basis. The new generation has many characters who consistently fulfill the roles of their predecessors as the torch is passed from one generation to the next. Each game has a theme that represents both the elements that are inherited from one generation to the next, and also the method the system uses to manipulate the player and the world.

MGS1=GENE, MGS2=MEME, MGS3=SCENE, MGS4=SENSE, MGSPW=PEACE, MGSV=RACE

It is implied that certain concepts are repeated beyond just those two generations as well: Philosophers -> Patriots -> Philanthropy. Each generation has it's major players who hold the world's fate in their hands. The hope of the series is that the newest generation can makes things right.

An example of directly repeating themes:

OLD: Big Boss is memetic son of The Boss.
OLD: Ocelot is genetic son of the Boss but may be unaware of this.
OLD: Gene is designed as perfect successor of the Boss. Frames Big Boss for a hostile takeover.

NEW: Solid is inferior clone of Big Boss.
NEW: Liquid is superior clone of Big Boss but is unaware of this.
NEW: Solidus is designed as perfect clone of Big Boss. Frames Solid for a hostile takeover.

Metal Gear Solid V is in the interesting position of having to bridge the generation gap. We need to say goodbye to the idea of Big Boss as the protagonist and begin seeing him as the villain of Solid Snake's story. We will be doing this with the controller in our hands.

actually, is there anywhere I can get a well-written summary of the MGS timeline, complete with filling in details like "no one was actually saying "LA LE LI LU LO," but instead people just processed "Patriots" as a bunch of nonsense syllables to prevent them from catching on that some shadowy cabal was, uh...I dunno...being shadowy"

I've never seen anything like that. Even the MGS4 Database was confusing and lacking in many ways, and that was an official source. Plus, any summary would carry some of the author's own interpretation and bias, so you'd have to filter opinion from fact. The best thing to do (and I'm not trying to be rude) is to play the series again.

I'm very interested to see how the child soldier angle is handled.

Agreed. Kojima announced that the next game would have controversial themes when "Kony 2012" was at the forefront of online discussion. I wonder how complicit the player will be in creating more orphans and facing the repercussions. The B&B expositions in MGS4 were horrific, but they were only told via codec. Considering the views Big Boss held in the original game, creating B&B soldiers could be mission objectives this time around. I imagine we'll see some atrocious things in this game.

Also, I will be completely surprised if we don't meet young Drebin.

Would I be missing out on much if I passed on Peace Walker? I pretty much enjoyed every single MGS game from the 1st one.

Yeah, especially considering that Kaz, Paz, Chico, and Huey are confirmed to be in TPP. I'm guessing they'll also address the fates of the other main characters. (Amanda, Strangelove, Cecile)

It's also worth mentioning that there appears to be a huge shift in tone between PW and GZ. Peace Walker's theme is PEACE so everything in the game is made to seem light-hearted, when there's actually a lot of betrayal, kidnapping, coercion, NUCLEAR WEAPONS and controversial sexual behaviour. MGSV may have more of its intended effect on you if you've seen the MSF propaganda piece that is Peace Walker.

If you're playing PW HD, I'm sure you can find some comrades in the thread to co-op with. (It makes vehicle battles much more fun.) However, if you're playing on PSP or VITA, it's a really great handheld game because of the mission structure.

Seriously, if you're on the fence about Peace Walker, don't be. It's way different from the other main entries in the series, but it's so so good.

Co-ops is great, but after (finally) growing bored with postgame grinding of monsters and mechs, I tried VS OPS. Great fun, especially when the weapons are limited. I recently took part in a 3-on-3 Team Deathmatch that allowed nothing but CQC, Stun Knife, and Placed Weapons. Gray Fox would be proud - a fistfight in a minefield.

It was the coma BEFORE Peace Walker that marked the beginning of the Les Enfants Terrible project. "Cipher" is mentioned in the post-game phone call of PW as being an alias of Zero, so you can count on him being in the game in one way or another.

So many comas...

I thought the singing anime robots more than made up for their lack of personality by being the only bosses in the entire series that were fun to fight. Which was good because you had to fight them a lot.

Once you get accustomed to the patterns, it feels good to thrash giant machines. It's repetitive, but that's also a key concept of the story of the series. There were times that I would remember that the bosses were both the AI and the AI.

It's interesting to consider that each fight feels a lot like REX. It would not bother me at all if mech battles were a big part of the game. The series is called Metal Gear Solid. If Solid's not in it, it had better deliver the Metal Gear. Cocoon would be incredible if it were unleashed on the Afghanistan map.

IIRC, Kojima showed a picture of the Peace Walker and Chrysalis PW models rendered in the FOX engine along with the horse. Now that Snake can jump, hang, and climb better we could have a robotic Shadow of the Colossus.

I found this version of Sins of the Father without the trailer sound effects and voiceover. It's an excellent addition to the songs of the series.

Sins of the Father

Composer: Akihiro Honda
Lyrics: Ludvig Forssell
Vocals: Donna Burke

quote:

Pride feeds their blackened hearts
And the thirst must be quenched through hypocrisy.
Cleansing flame is the only way to repent.
Renounce what made you.

Words that kill, would you speak them to me?
With your breath so still it makes me believe.

The sins never die, can't wash this blood off our hands.
Let the world fear us all. It's just means to an end.
Our salvation lies in the father's sins.
Beyond the truth, let me suffer now.

In my heart I just know that there's no way to light up the dark in his eyes.

That's a good thing.

After reading this in the HD Collection thread, I stopped using the tranq gun in PW (except for fighting dragons):

The tranq gun didn't introduce non-lethal(technically less-lethal; non-lethal force is a myth) gameplay to the series, it was always there. In MGS1, you could neutralize a guard without killing him by sneaking up on him and choking him unconscious, or punch-punch-kicking him a couple of times.

You cannot complete MGS1 non-lethally. When you "choke" the guards, you're breaking their necks. You can hear a pretty gross crunching sound as you complete the action. You also have the boss fights (including the two elevator battles with guards) wherein you must kill to complete them.

That said, I agree with the sentiment of your post. The more things Snake can do in the game, the more fun the player can have. If an ice cream stand has 10 flavours and you always get chocolate, it doesn't ruin your experience if they add 5 new flavours. It means there's more to choose from if for some reason you don't feel like your favourite.

Hell, last time I played MGS4 I re-imagined Snake as a wizard. I wore the Altair outfit and used the Mantis/Sorrow dolls, Petrol Bomb, WP Grenade, and Railgun. (Switching to other items only temporarily if needed.) It was something silly and fun, but didn't take away from my usual experience. I will still go back to Octocamo, M4, Operator, Stun Knife and Smoke Grenades because it feels right.

When you do get the call for the last search mission, remember to select a good cutscene camo.

Playing the Zadornov missions (all at night) with the Sneaking suit, the FAL, NVGs, binos, and yellow smoke grenades replicates the GZ trailer experience fairly well. You can also encounter soldiers in equipment suspiciously similar to the XOF if you trigger an alert in Aldea de los Despiertos. (where Chico was first held captive)

I suspect that Skull Face is Zadornov. It feels as though the Peace Walker mission was reconnaissance before the raid with his troops. Kojima mentioned that he brought back a character that died, and we know fake death pills work. I wonder just how short a time passes between Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes.

I thought I'd also mention this: While I personally don't see any problem with PW discussion here, (because it's the closest drat thing we have to a MGSV prologue in the meantime) Novolin's thread for the HD Collection is still open. There are some gameplay experts in that thread.

This was re-tweeted by Kojima. It also seems that the Japanese VO version of the E3 trailer will be released (in Red Band and Green Band) and it will reveal the Japanese VA for Ocelot.

I would like to mention a few small pieces of information for use as speculation-fuel. When we first saw Snake's new red hand, some people thought it might be Zadornov's prosthetic hand that Snake had obtained at the end of PW. This was disregarded by those who pointed out that Zadornov's was a right hand and Snake's is a left. When watching the Red Band E3 trailer (during the part where Snake helps Miller across the deck of what looks like Mother Base) I noticed that all the fingers are the same length. The 'pinky' finger is most noticeable. It could very well be Zadornov's hand, re-purposed by Huey and/or the R&D team.

Another interesting thing is in regards to Ocelot's lines in the Afghanistan portion of the trailer. His face is either coverered, or away from the audience, for almost all of the spoken lines in the trailer. Everything before the line "I expect you'll become quite familiar with those binoculars as you plan your next move" could very well be from a different segment of the game. I think that those lines would best fit into their meeting during the hospital escape. Ocelot wouldn't say "he's in Afghanistan" if they were also in Afghanistan.

The final thing I'd like to point out is that during Ocelot's character clip "A Rival living a Lie", he can be clearly seen mouthing his line from earlier in the trailer "and let the legend come back to life!" He is even making the same hand gesture. The shot was just the same moment from a different angle, right? No. They not only changed the camera angle, but relocated Ocelot's model. The shadows that cross his face and body after dismounting the horse to send Snake off are not present in the character clip.

The reason I feel these things are worth mentioning is that we can now confirm that not everything in the trailers can be taken at absolute face value. The GDC presentation showed how easily assets can be modified if necessary.

Which trailer is everyone dumping on? Anybody got a link? The last one in the OP is from E3.
Thanks to "John Luebke" for posting the link. I've updated the Media section of the OP with the English dialogue trailer and with the Japanese gameplay demo.

My thoughts on these recent media releases:

I'm happy to see that Snake is actually shown carrying the weapons in his inventory. When he picks up the enemy sniper rifle, it's slung on his back while the assault rife hangs to the side. Bottomless pockets bother me a bit.

I like the concept of full-base alert. It really jives with the idea that "the whole world wants you dead." The other games have been a bit strange with the idea of the Alert phase. "A legendary stealth soldier was spotted in our base and has already killed ten men, but we've been looking for him for a whole minute now and we've found nothing, so maybe he's gone."

I'm glad Snake can finally jump a little, and grab people from behind cover. The punches and kicks look smooth and satisfying, and will give me a reason to do something hands-on other than holdups and CQC-slams.

I really enjoy everything I've seen about the helicopter, from the jukebox to the method of POW extraction. Choosing the rendezvous point is a great touch, and I hope it allows you to change weapon/item loadouts mid-mission. Maybe even do supply drops and airstrikes.

I have no problem with the expanded tagging mechanic. It was cumbersome and inefficient in PW, and will mean great things for online play this time around. I particularly appreciate the fact that Snake sees an 'x-ray' representation of the targets. The poster now makes a lot of sense. I wonder if, with all the limbs that have gone missing, it will allow for the discovery of some interesting hidden information. (Maybe something like what the Mantis Mask was going to be in MGS2.) If you could see what's inside someone, that would explain the in-universe mechanic. Chico has an audio jack inside him. Paz has what appears to be a bomb or tracking device. Snake has a horn. It's not a stretch to assume there might be more going on there.

Something that I've noticed that I haven't seen discussed is that there appears to be destructible environments to some degree. It may just be a pre-scripted event because it was due to enemy fire, but during the Jeep escape at the end of the daytime demo, a guard tower explodes and collapses.

It's the basis for the entire concept of Outer Heaven. Soldiers can make their living fighting without being bound by political ideologies.

Zero/Cipher/Patriots want to control the world using this new system, while Big Boss and Miller hope to find freedom with it. Big Boss' final monologue in MGS4 explains it pretty well. I would say that the prologue (Ground Zeroes, set in Cuba at night in the rain) is almost certainly going to be Snake, as we've been told. However, there is a period of nine years where he is in a coma. I'm sure Zero and Miller didn't just put the war on pause while Big Boss was out cold. We may see some side (or even main) missions where we play as other characters before the TPP segment begins.

In one of the earliest FOX engine screenshots, you can see a character crouch-walking in front of a tank in what we can now assume is Afghanistan. The character has hair tied back into a short bunch, and looks like they could be Snake. Upon closer inspection, you can see that the fatigues match Miller's PW uniform and not Snake's. The rolled-up sleeves, the leg pockets, the lack of knee-pad, and the stitching across the back all match Miller's PW uniform and are dissimilar to Snake's PW uniform. Additionally, the hair seems to be a slightly lighter shade than BB's. It wouldn't surprise me if Miller throws on an eyepatch and plays pinch hitter during some portion of MGSV.

I'm still suspicious because of the remark Kojima made on twitter about "not just one epicenter". It feels like this 9-year period is a great place to cover multiple origin stories. It could get overly convoluted (even by Kojima standards) if they crammed all the next-gen characters' origins into the same main missions. Considering the Patriots would have kept most of their assets compartmentalized for information control purposes, it makes sense that Raiden, Solidus, Gray Fox, Naomi, Liquid, and Solid are not all going to be in the same place at the same time.

Snake Eater did make the Biblical correlations rather clear. I would say that the series draws inspiration from other religious and mythological sources as well. (Egyptian and Norse, most evidently.)

Depending on which text is used, it may be interpreted that King David was the youngest of eight brothers, and Eliab the oldest. If Eli from the MGSV trailer is Liquid, as many suspect, this would be a strong parallel to the "super baby" cloning method described in Metal Gear Solid. Eliab was judged unworthy to rule, while King David famously faced the armored giant Goliath with a slingshot.

Last year I compiled a decent list of some of the religious symbolism in the series. It's not with me right now, but I'll post it when I get ahold of it.

Although, am I alone in the feeling that he's implying that the FOX engine might be able to scale MGSV to the Vita? That is one of the features announced for the PS4, right? And "Transfarring" worked great for switching Peace Walker between PSP/PS3.

Kojima has said, regarding the choice of the title "Ground Zeroes", that there is "more than one epicenter". I think we'll be seeing the origin stories of more than one character. The above tweet seems suspicious if you consider the circumstances of Ocelot's birth.

Could the missions in GZ/TPP be scattered throughout the timeline? I'm not suggesting canon implementation of time travel, but I am reminded of one of Kojima's visions that he'd had as far back as the creation of MGS2. He wanted to add a system where actions have repercussions over time. Say, if you plant a seed in the ground, and return at a later time, you would be able to note it's growth. I wonder if some unexplained areas in the timeline might be left ambiguous so that actions taken by the player in earlier points in the timeline may actually manifest in the later missions.

Please don't remind me of that. It's the main reason I hate PO. MGSV could have been the game to introduce Gray Fox to us but now it's not gonna happen.

I've been replaying Portable Ops and my resentment for it is steadily melting away. Even the controls aren't as bad as I remember them. (Perhaps because I realized I could effectively map the Action and Inventory commands to the same button.)

The story and setting are a good blend of MGS1 and MGS2. Playing it again reminded me that Roy and Snake are running their whole operation out of the back of a truck - nowhere near the caliber of MSF. Even the funds and plans that Gene hands off to Snake wouldn't be massive, just enough to set up a small sustainable operation in the PW cabin. Gene didn't have funds comparable to the Legacy. He hijacked an existing base and recruited Red Army defectors. His real assets were the Metal Gears and the FOX unit.

The troublesome thing about playing POOPS and accepting it as canon is realizing that Gene was codenamed "Viper". Perhaps "V has come to" refers to him. I mentioned in the previous thread that I was convinced that Skull Face was Zadornov. I'm now considering the possibility that Gene/Zadornov/SkullFace are the same person. That could explain the origin of Decoy Octopus.

Gene is the analog to Solidus just as BB and Ocelot are to Solid and Liquid. (The perfect successor of the previous legendary soldier hijacks a base and frames Snake.) It's notable that Solidus had "Octopus" arms, and that Laughing Octopus ALSO framed Snake for an attack by using the FaceCamo.

The last thing I'll mention is that first casualty of Shadow Moses was Decoy Octopus and that Solidus was behind the whole operation. It would fit the series' theme of the new succeeding the old. There are other connections, but I don't have the time right now to go into further detail. Just something to think about while we wait for more V.

Finally went out and bought Portable Ops, and I am having fun with it other than two things.

1) the amount of time it takes to drag people back to the truck. Its either that or switching to another character to bring their hiding spot closer then switching back.

2) The aiming. The nub sucks for aiming, even the D-pad is better for aiming.

I do have to say that it most certainly is an ambitious game when you think about it since it sets up the blueprints for Peace Walker.

You can actually just drop the enemy soldier next to the nearest potential hiding spot, (marked by a blue X in the Member Change menu) hide your current character in that spot, switch to a different team member, and call the retrieval codec frequency. This comes in handy later in the game as you find soldiers with shorter K.O. durations.

Don't drop them TOO close, or it will make that hiding spot invalid, but do take advantage of the fact that by using the box and/or codec retrieval methods, you can send back multiple enemies with one box. That aside - if you count as you drag, you'll find most enemies aren't more than 20-30 seconds from the truck. If you've played Peace Walker vehicle missions, that kind of wait should be no sweat.

The real pain is when there is a tiny ledge between you and the nearest retrieval location. If Snake can lift them into the truck, he should be able to carry them up/down one step. It seems like GZ/TPP found a balance between the POOPS and PW levels of retrieval ease. The "fireman's carry" method will reduce (not eliminate) the amount of male humping in the game.

In regards to your other point, Portable Ops was the first game where I could play comfortably without first-person aiming a weapon. The Lock-On works well for the scale of the maps. First-person view in POOPS is most helpful for turning while crawling without accidentally starting a game of whack-a-mole with the enemies.

It's not a bad game. Most certainly not as bad as Goons were making it out to be. How are your controls set up? Right now I am rolling with the default, but I am considering switching to the D-pad for move, because it seems less finicky when it comes to first person aiming.

Pretty much PW's "Shooter" control scheme because I consider it important to be able to easily look around while moving.

Config B (Nub for movement, symbol buttons for camera)
Equip = UP
Fire/Attack = R
Lock-On = L
Action = UP
Crawl = DOWN
First Person View = RIGHT
Stalk/Behind = LEFT

Left index finger can do everything, since I haven't found the need to do any of the functions simultaneously. Also, when you are running ahead and want to dive/roll, and you can just slip the thumb from the nub to the the DOWN button. Action and Equip are good on the same button because Action is tapped but Equip needs to be held. It's only the slightest annoyance to have to sometimes tap it again after climbing a ladder/ledge, since tapping will toggle the last equipped piece of gear. (Except for during Boss Battles, I rarely use any equipment in POOPS.) Also, I never accidentally drop anything because it requires repositioning the hand for the thumb to use the UP button and index finger to use L.

I've moved on to the Infinity Mission of POOPS+. It's a lot of fun because of the randomization. I've gotten as far as Stage 12 of EXTREME. (I often retreat using Fulton when I have the chance, instead of risking losing whatever Unique characters were rescued by getting stuck in an indoor mission with special conditions.)
