Bethesda games are the kind of games I respect because of the scale and scope of the whole thing, but actually playing through them is like trying to eat bland flavorless mush. I'm trying to play Skyrim right now and the characters and story are drab and boring, the combat/"exploration" is repetitive and unsatisfying, and every minute I try to slog through it, the more I want to just go try the Witcher 2 instead.

The best description I ever heard of Skyrim is that it is an ocean wide, but only a foot deep. I enjoyed it still, but most of that was from wandering around the world looking at the sights and listening to the soundtrack, which really isn't what most people would play it for. The plot and characters are okay I guess, but in the end it just feels like a wasted opportunity to tell an epic and unique story.

Mod it to hell and back.

I dont think its that chrome extension, because I havent used it and i keep getting these same kind of friend requests, 1-2 a day or the past few, all accounts with just 1 game, East India Trading or whatever.

I cant figure out why either. My profile is public but my inventory is friends only. The only things I can think of is that I use enhanced steam and recently used idle master, but I doubt its either of them.

I did get Risk of Rain in a bundle though and it's insanely fun. I had a question about single player versus multiplayer though. In local co op when we restart we keep a lot of things like power ups and money. But in single player I actually have to start from scratch each time. It seems impossible to progress on single player. What am I missing?

What do you mean by restart? Because if you mean you both die in local co-op, then when you start a new game from the first level you should be restarting with no money/items, just like single player. Its a roguelike-lite-like (or whatever) in that way. I'm actually confused as to how you would even retain money/items, unless one of you is some kind of wizard.

Single player is totally possible, it just seems really hard as balls at first because you have to learn to use your characters abilities, such as their dodge, as well as how to balance the time spent per level versus item collection. Actually I think local co-op is harder because unlike internet co-op you cant split up to find the teleporter fatser.

Dawn of Discovery Gold/Anno 1404 is 40% off, http://store.steampowered.com/sub/3047/ at $9. I doubt it'll be a daily, given Anno 2070 is on sale today and it's really old.

That said, 1404 is amazing, one of my favorite builders ever. It's charming, relaxing, and there's a great fan patch out there that fixes a ton of quests, little quirks, spelling/grammar translation issues, and adds very useful in-game build order references.

If you like builders, give it a try. If you've never tried one, this is one of the best.

Endless Legend IS a daily today, and it's a great fantasy empire builder. If you like civ style games, it's quite worth it. Their last game Endless Space was a bit of a mess, but their two recent games (all set in the same universe) are fun - this and Dungeon of the Endless.

I'll agree with this, buy the Gold edition for Venice too, its worth it. You're probably safe from a higher discount too because since it was added back to the store it hasnt sold for more than 40% off, even if 2070 is 75% off. Also if you have Enhanced Steam and are wary of the big red banner that warns of the 3rd party infamously bad Tages DRM, dont worry that is dated and no longer applies.

Although I'd hesitate to call it a building game exactly. I mean, there is a lot of that starting out, but the focus for most of the game seems more to be trading and resource management. Make sure to get the big community mod patch of course too, and you only need to install and play the Venice version I believe.

It also gets you to digitally dust off your copies of stuff you forgot even had multiplayer.

Well there's my interest check done for me. I'd been kicking around the idea of doing a co-op thread for a while, since my library is getting bloated with games that are apparently fun to play online/co-op but I dont have cool pc gamer irl friends and/or their online communities are dead. I was considering posting it after the sale was over and everybody had finished loading up with the steam meta-game, but I guess I should maybe do it earlier?

I got a long list of co-op and multiplayer games that'd be likely candidates, and like half an OP written up, but I'm still unsure if it should just be for finding co-op buddies or have like a game of week/month where everybody tries to play one game together for maximum playerbase/goon dickery. Or both? And I was uncertain whether Games or Private Game Servers would be a better place for it.

That's fine, I figure it'll be real loosey-goosey anyway, loads of people have sporadic game times, and time zones for that matter. It really depends on the game too, for some it'll only be goons looking to co-op 1 on 1 with each other (:pervert:), but for others we'll probably be trying to get bunches of people together to :goon: some poor old multiplayer game's servers so we'll need more concrete times and such.

So "Rogue-like" games on steam are a horribly mixed bunch. I loving love FTL and Binding of Isaac. Even when I lose in those games it rarely feels flat out unfair, in the case of FTL usually it was just a bad choice or in isaac I just got hit too much. When I win, it feels fun because I beat a hard game. Liking these I tend to consider suggestions for rogue-likes when people compare them to those two which has led to me buying a lot of games that are not good. Maybe I'm wrong for assuming otherwise, but apparently "rogue-like" to most people just means flat out unfair because most of the ones on steam that I've played just sort of flip you off and can be unwinnable from the get-go. Maybe I'm just bad at those games in particular, but it never felt like I could have done anything different in the situations I was in and when I'm dying in the first stage because the game gave me nothing but healing items and I couldn't even fight back against enemies. It just feels hosed up.

Risk of Rain, Spelunky, Ziggurat, Tower of Guns, Dungeons of Dredmor, Dungeon of the Endless, Crypt of the NecroDancer, Nuclear Throne, Teleglitch. Don't Starve maybe. If one of those doesn't scratch your itch I don't know what to tell you.
