Vermintide 2 Update!

See new OP for Vermintide 2 here https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3851244

Vermintide 2 is almost out! There is a beta running now for people who preorder! It's stupid cheap for a great game! Go get it now and join the Steam Group & Discord server and kill rats with goons now! I'm too busy killing rat people to write a bunch about it, but basically, Vermintide 2 improves on almost every aspect of the game and keeps all the good stuff from Vermintide 1. Don't think! Start killing rats now!

Full release date/time; 10AM PST/1PM EST March 8th 2018.

What is it?

The next best thing since shooting zombies in the face: hitting rat-men in the face with a giant hammer! Vermintide is the next step in evolution of the zombie survival co-op game. It takes place in the Warhammer Fantasy universe, right around when the world is ending and the Skaven (along with everyone else) try to conquer the world. It won best game of PAX and there are a ton of videos already out there from some of the closed betas showing off the gameplay.

How does it play?

It is very much like Left 4 Dead, in that it is 4 player co-op, where you work to accomplish objectives and not die while an endless horde of disgusting rat people try to kill you. There are special enemies that can one shot you (jumpy assassin, rat-catcher, minigun-rat) if you are stupid and get caught alone. Teamwork & staying together is vital. Like L4D, knowledge of the map significantly helps, but the encounters are random, so there is a lot of replayability.

There are 5 classes, each with a choice of a melee and ranged weapon. Some classes are more melee focused (dwarf, soldier) and some more ranged focused (mage, elf). Melee combat is a big component, not an afterthought like in L4D, and there is blocking, dodging, and location based damage.

How does the loot system work?

At the end of every mission, everyone gets a certain number of dice. You roll the dice, and based on how many show face up, your loot drop upgrades. Everyone gets the same number of dice, regardless of performance. There are also loot items that you can find in the map, which if carried successfully through to the end of the map, gives everyone additional and better dice (higher percent chance of a face). This (should) give everyone even more incentive to work together and not be a dick. Unwanted items can be broken down or combined to make better items.

How do I talk to people?

The game DOES now have built in voice chat, or you can meet up with other chill goons hanging out on our own Mumble server, Camping the Stairs. See link for access. Link

How do I find other people to play with?

We have our own channel on CTS (see above), as well as a Steam group. If you want to play with goons, log into the CTS Mumble server, or join the Steam Group chat and see if anyone is around. Playing with pubbies can be a real pain, so play with Goons who are 100% guaranteed to be better at the game due to Goons superior qualities (paid $10 to access comedy website forums).

I'm still unsure, these guys have made some bad games and most GW games suck!

Here are some gameplay videos, if they don't convince you nothing will

When is the Release date?

The game is officially released on Steam Oct 23 2015, but if you pre-order the game (at a 10% discount), you get access to the open beta test one week early. Beta progression during the pre-order beta DOES carry over when the full game is released (baring some catastrophe).

Progress will be saved past beta barring some exploitastrophe.

They're also doing a free beta this coming Monday to Wednesday that you had to sign up for. I just got a key today, but I have no idea if they're still giving them out.

If you go to the Alienware site, they will say they have keys available, until you sign up, then they will tell you they are actually out. I was too lazy to make an OP before then.

I've got a key for the beta tomorrow, and had a chance to play a bit on Friday when they forgot to shut something down. It feels right, the melee is good, and the characters are all decently fun to play. If the remaining 10 missions are as good as the 3 available in the beta, it's going to be great. Just waiting for the Ork character DLC.

I got a chance to play a few rounds when it was open on Friday. The melee combat felt really, really good. I particularly liked the 2-handed hammer, as both its overhead swings and horizontal swipes felt like they had real weight behind them. I can see myself playing this for a while, but I worry about how long the community will stick around if they don't put in verses mode, much stronger loot, or just continously release new content patches.

They have said that there are some special skaven that they haven't shown off yet. I hope that we get some kind of Skaven caster, as that would have a lot of possibilities and could distinguish the game from L4D a bit.

I've got 200+ hours into L4D, and that is without loot/xp and almost entirely PUG games. I think Vermintide will be at least as good, and has the potential to be much more. I'm hoping they go the route Payday 2 did, with plenty of DLC at a steady rate.

Test ran Witch Hunter and Bright Wizard in the first mission, found both awesome in different ways. WH's ability to fire off a pistol with his sword out or to never stop shooting all of the guns was rad, but so was throwing out big pillars of fire. My only gripe with BW was that the venting mechanic wasn't explained at all and I took a lot of unnecessary ticks of damage venting too little charge before I realized what was happening, but that was me not paying attention.

Game is rad, basically. :black101:

Venting mechanic just changed for this patch. Before, it would only vent your heat in excess of your normal range, you'd have to wait for it to go down the rest of the way.

Yea, that would be what I expected. My point was actually that, it does change how a character plays somewhat.

The different traits can. Better blocking might make a 2h sword as good a blocker as a shield, so you could go from just a damage dealer to damage + tank. There are a lot of combos and will take awhile before their interaction becomes worked out, but I would say that yes, it does.

How much control do you have over melee swings? Are there controls to select swing direction, or is it basically just clicking through a set attack cycle?

Set sequence. Different weapons have different kinds of attack angles, and your main attack and charge attack have their own. You wouldn't really want more than that, it gets way too chaotic when the Skaven start swarming.

i dumped a bunch of thoughts about the game into the beta feedback form they provide in the launch menu. the fools!

i rather like what ive seen but theres not much of a feeling of OH GOSH I GOTTA HAVE THIS, and I wonder if its going to last more than a month or two. I hope it picks up a playerbase and the devs go the payday/l4d route of keeping up a series of dlc/updates. I also wonder how many things they can really get sorted out in two weeks; the AI gets stuck on stuff a lot and the packmaster/gutter both feel like I'm fighting a janky bundle of polygons with a quantum hitbox a lot of times. the levels also don't have a real sense of "arc" to them or feeling of attrition; even on higher difficulties, it feels like its more a game of "everything is great until it suddenly isnt and we all die".

i'd be leery if it cost $60 but for 30 bucks it seems like an above-adequate deal.

I think the same could have been said of Payday 2 when it first came out, there were only a few heists and 4 characters, no perk decks, etc. If they keep at it, I think it will be good.

Yes, this beta currently in progress ends tomorrow at 6PM EST. I believe there is another beta event scheduled next week, before the public beta for pre-orders. The beta key for this weekend SHOULD work for all of them, though I can't promise that. I am basing this statement on the fact that my beta key for this beta also allowed me to access a previous beta on Friday, when I got my key. All the key does is unlock the Public Test version of the game on Steam, so I think everyone that has the Public Test version can run it, and take part in any beta when the servers are up.

Also, he can carry up to 64 pistols if he is using his rapier/offhand pistol combo melee weapon. He's basically a skeleton under that coat and the rest of the bulk is taken up with pistols.

Are they in this and I just missed them?

I think I saw in one of the Tips it mention the name of the specific clan that is attacking Ubersriek. Don't remember the name, but it wasn't the big 4. They may have created a "Skaven Undivided" type clan to allow for having both rat ogres, globe throwers, and gutter runners all at once.

I like Lady Legolas, her daggers or sword/dagger combo can easily butcher dozens of slave/clan rats in seconds. The swipes do extra headshot damage, and are fast and go side to side, so hitting the heads is easy. With some of the different bows available, she becomes much more interesting. The longbow will bodyshot most rats, so you don't have to only go for head, and can 1-2 shot most specials, which can be really important with things like gattling rats or stormvermin. Her poison one seems to do a lot of damage to rat ogres, though I haven't tried it yet.

The story goes, the Witch Hunter has arrested Bright Wizard and is escorting her somewhere, and has hired Soldierman to help. They are in their way through Ubersriek when poo poo hit the fan. Also, there is an elf and dwarf.

I really like the Tome/Grimoire system, as it lets you do some fine grained difficulty management. Once the game is out for a few weeks, everyone will know where they are, so it will be a choice to get them or not. If you are running with a crappy group, or your luck has just been terrible, you can skip getting the grimoires.

One of the nice things is they have ample options for free DLC, like adding new traits or weapon types. They can also add new characters for cheaper DLC, and full blown maps for more expensive DLC. Later on they could do something like add skill trees to do a whole 2.0 overhaul, etc.

I don't know how it was for you, but of the crashes I experienced, they managed to fix those within the first day the beta was running. So I am impressed with their speed on that, and the beta served it's purpose! I don't think you really understand what a public beta is for. It's not a demo, it's not about YOU at all. It is so they can collect data at a large scale that they were not able to in their labs. They will then work through that data and fix bugs. If they are able to push out changes as fast as they were during the beta, I am fully confident they will fix the majority of issues.

The beam staff in particular felt really weak to me (though fun to use). To kill one special skaven, even in normal, I would have to point it at their head and hold it there for several seconds, long enough that it would put me about 70% of the way to exploding. Given this staff seems pretty much designed to kill specials, this seems pretty pathetic especially compared to the crossbows or handguns which can drop anything other than a Rogre in a single headshot. Though the flip side is the beam-staff also had the shotgun like blast as it''s primary attack. It seems hard to balance the bright wizards ranged since each staff is effectively two different abilities.

I don't think the beam is to be used on it's own, I think it's like a charging beam. You can fire your primary while lasing someone, and it will hit them from much further off, and I THINK it does more damage the longer they are 'charged' with the beam, but I only took it out for one mission.

That's pretty disappointing. Nightmare already has friendly fire and no respawns. Though it's usually not an issue since ranged is really only useful to pick off skaven or kill specials and they usually swarm you in hard or above difficulty. I had a blast, but I think the game could use something special on the hardest difficulties to actually make it challenging. I mean, hard is still so easy that you can run it consistently with 2 bots and 100% loot drops.

Oh, maybe FF is Nightmare, no idea what Cataclysm is. Probably spawns Gutter Runners in place of clan rats...

That may be the case, but as of right now, we have no way of knowing if that is what's going to happen. I am sure that some maps will be played more than others, because that's just how things like that work out, but I think it may be a little premature to say that people are just going to hammer one level over and over again for loot.

Some of us actually enjoyed the game and aren't really interested in min/maxing. Whether or not you believe this represents a minority or majority opinion is your call. What it's going to come down to is if they have enough of a player base.

I think we saw a lot of one map running in the closed beta because there were only 3 maps. One of them had no tomes/grimoires, and one of them was so open it tricked most people into spreading out and getting killed. So most people settled on the Horn of Magnus because it had better loot options without pubbies getting themselves killed in dumb ways. Once the game opens up and has a better selection, I think we'll see less of that.

One thing that I wanted in Payday 2 and would like here, is if you got rewards for doing missions in an unbroken streak, so if you do Ramparts->Horn->War Machines->etc without failing, you get an extra dice (up to a maximum) for each one. Gives a better sense of continuity and an incentive to get a group and stick together, instead of constantly dropping and joining.

I think one of the biggest problems with payday 2 was specifically because there was far too much grindy bullshit between having to farm cash, experience, and the weapon parts. The players singling out one or two missions to farm was them becoming a victim of the skinner box design. The fact that your potential weapon parts cards in payday shared a loot pool with mask parts and cash (at least initially, I'm not sure how it is now). The fact that you could just as really get a bunch of parts for one of the 30 weapons you didn't have due to experience or money constraints, or it just flat out suckling really exacerbated that.

So far, just based on how it's being reported, it doesn't seem like the weapon grind is nearly as soul sucking, but I guess we have to have the whole game out before I can say definitively.

I kinda like that you don't just get gear for the one you are playing, it discourages you having a 'favourite' and then throwing a fit when someone else is playing them.
