I love the idea that people liking A24 for their consistently good output of niche films is somehow the result of a trick or a cargo cult. Even when a studio eschews everything CD complains about—sequel/reboot fever, studio meddling/movies-by-committee, overly ridiculous click bait marketing—CD whining, uh, finds a way. I'm loling continuously about this

Lol, yes that's exactly what I'm saying. My statement of "A24 makes good films and has good business practices (afaik)" is perfectly equivalent to "I warp my entire personality around consumption and identifying with corporations to make myself feel superior to people online." Instead of engaging with my statement on its merits or disagreeing, you're warping what I said to fit a twisted as hominem attack. You've cracked the code man, you're a freaking genius

Despite having way more exposition, the sci-fi narrative of Blade Runner 20XX is really dumb. And it doesn't build on the plot or themes of the original at all.

The most concrete praise the sequel gets is something about "subverting the chosen one narrative", which is the same thing people say about the dire Disney Star Wars movies. And, in that respect, it's still way inferior to rival sci-fi film The Life Of Brian.

The cinematography is good, but it plays out like one of those fanedits where they reinsert all the deleted scenes.

Top 5 sci-fi movies, go.

That and people outright miss the whole point of the first half of the movie is the monsters are seen framed through TVs, windows and apertures, as a recurring motif. It's not very subtle about it.

The TV bit is particularly egregious because it's immediately preceded by the first clear shot of the big guy in the movie. You don't show the monster and then take it away.

The problem isn't that we can't see him, it's that we do see him briefly after being constantly teased... then we go back to being teased.

Alan Smithee posted:

Do tell

Tyler perry has got to be hurting since he just built a multi million dollar studio in Atlanta

Then again they are probably shooting anyway

First act is a pretty bog standard setup - unproven Virginia defense attorney gets her first big case (wife killed her husband) from her ball-busting boss (Tyler Perry), it's open and shut, but the defendant has a heart of gold.

Second act we learn that the husband, a young stud introduced to the defendant by her best friend, was perfect in every way until he transformed into a mustache-twirling cartoon villain seemingly overnight: stole wife's identity and money, flagrantly cheated on her in front of her, verbally abused her. then the first twist: she admits to the protagonist that she whacked him in the head with a baseball bat and admitted the crime to her best friend. Trial goes horribly, protagonist is shown to be basically completely incompetent, and finally the best friend spills the beans to the prosecutor on the stand. After this stunning admission, the protagonist rests her defense, then refuses to make a closing statement and impotently demands a retrial until she gets thrown in jail for contempt of court. Tyler Perry fires her because she's a massive idiot.

At this point, you'd think that this is the classic point of the hero's journey where our protagonist, at her lowest point, turns everything around and saves the day? Well, she goes to the best friend's house to discuss a possible appeal and discovers a dungeon full of old ladies in the basement. Best friend captures and subdues the protagonist with the help of her son, a.k.a. wife's supposedly-murdered husband. Turns out they've been luring little old ladies, kidnapping them, and cashing their social security checks for decades. Luckily, Protagonist's husband, a cop, comes to the house to save her. He busts down the door, cuffs the best friend after she attempts to knock him out with a frying pan, and... just tells her to stay put (whereupon she immediately escapes). Cop gets jumped by Evil Husband, protagonist undoes her bindings and shoots him. Cue denouement: all charges are dropped, wife goes free, protagonist looks over get shoulder and Tyler Perry gives her a nod and a thumbs up. But... Evil Best Friend is shown walking into an old folks home. The End...?

For the sake of time I had to leave out some of the finer details, but this movie really is a piece of work.

It's not even completely insane, as far as insane movies go. It's just that you can imagine the most rote by-the-books guilty saint plot from the premise, and then you see the wall of chained-up old biddies that look and move like literal zombies and you realize that Tyler Perry tore up the last 20 pages of this AI-generated script and decided to have some fun
