Not to bring up old garbage but I don't post about the off-season challenges because (besides Chrono Trigger) it's "take this specific class and run it as fast as you can" and I don't play the game either of those ways lol.

I think personally this'll be a great year or a bummer of a one. It's an interesting time for me and throwing myself into a game might just be what the doctor ordered!

Interesting!

Side note, shoot, I totally forgot I wanted to play Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light or Octopath Traveller this year before the run starts (as I'd completed all the Bravely Defaults in the same way for years past). Oh well, at least there was the BD2 demo earlier this year.

Welp, I started the FFV4JF with a dead power supply (and I'm still down my desktop) and wow what a time to miss out on the going-ons, but thankfully I did get to play a bit so I got a few posts to make here! First of all, last year's Randomizer :toxx: was donated just in time for The Run! Congrats to Osci, 1234567890num, MagusDraco, blakelmenakle, apophenium, Darwinism, Doom Goon, and Can Of Worms.

In case you thought I forgot something, I'm doing the Randomizer :toxx: again BUT with one addition this time: Mild runs only. I guarantee you'll get something broken, but imo Spicy made it so practically everyone could just run through the game by holding down the 'A' button. To compensate I'll add an extra dime per run. The rest is the same: $1.10 per goon up to 20 for every goon that completes a run from now on to the end (must complete a normal run first) using Can Of Worms's Final Fantasy V Advance Randomizer. Make sure to emptyquote this post on a win so I can see it! Oh, and please don't use the FFV4JF site (probably not cool crowning on impossible runs). It's up to you if you want to spoil the Jobs you get or not but I'd recommend it to reduce grinding and magic level confusion. Also, I'll probably wait until next year to actually donate so I can kill two birds with one stone and water that tree.
:siren:Also, make sure you use the clean unpatched Final Fantasy V Advance US ROM (CRC32 7A24AB0C)! You'll get game-breaking errors with the EU version or patched ROMs that change job stuff.

So I guess a single Blue Mage is technically a "guaranteed" triple crown lol. If you're the right level and say you use Vampire on the GBA versions. You could probably make it easier in a variety of ways (death procs, that equipment glitch that only works on the US GBA version) but I wanted to keep it simple and show you could do it with 3 of anything else as well (Monks w/ crits would probably be the hardest? I guess you could just Time Slip them even if they were a high level). And, boy, was that an awful Omega win, no fancy script reading or anything and there were at least 2 non-Reflected punches, a bad Vampire, and a blocked Maelstrom.

Honestly I'm a little surprised it didn't take longer, I got 2 successes in a something like a little over one 7 to 10 hours marathon Wonder Rod grind (the first being an embarrassing wipe on an early Flame Shield replace). I didn't even know the RNG was that varied enough to work to be quite honest.

Cattail Prophet posted:

Wait, zombied party members don't count as undead for drain attacks?
Nope, Zombie != Undead and it checks the target only. And White Wind works because White Wind is great. Vampire is great too because of the GBA bug but it still has a chance to whiff.

Oh, I tried out Assassin's Dagger for random healing (hey, helpful for MP at least) but at a Red Mage w/ comparable level it still had minor damage which is bad mostly because of Maelstrom (if you're lucky with the last digit and fast enough you can catch the Sap). And iirc Mini has crits even though it's not exactly the Brawl/Fists weapon type so that's out for the same reason. Also, you can't really get Zombie out of Sleep so not the best, you'd just want to keep level in mind if you had Assassin's Dagger/wanted to risk the Death Sickle (Death Bow has a special death iirc). I guess you could reflect Ancient Sword on a free turn since Bone Mail is immune to Old?

Actually, now that I think about it there was no reason for me to Time Slip that Zombie because Old doesn't work that way on characters (it does stats instead of levels which I'm guessing doesn't include armor's Evasion which is Magic Evade%?). Actually, I didn't check if any of that armor had Magic Evade% lol, I checked weight and agility.

Run 1: Samurai, Berserker, Beastmaster, Berserker

Anything interesting?: Believe it or not this might've been my easiest/fastest ever 100% non-fleeing (or close, I think I accidentally did it for useless Lightning Dragons) runs ever. Iainuki just eats random encounters and things it didn't insta-death were often paralyzed by whips (which is becoming one of my favorite weapon types) or crits. The inherited Agility of Whips was nice as well. Oh, and the different damage formula means Dragon Whisker misses less (so does Beast Killer). One of those runs where Byblos (or was it Liquid Flame?) is the hardest boss in the game.

On top of that I Goblin Punched (mostly level manipulation crit-ing) most of the bosses after I remembered that :toxx: existed. Mystic Knight and Red Mage helped that because they have status effects they can do that Blue Mage alone cannot plus a Libra and more accurate sword Osmoses. It's also hilarious when some of these bosses have their MP drained away. My favorite run... ever!

Absolute powerhouses that way at mid/high level, although boy was my defense lacking. I was hoping for the ol' Monk/Dancer combo but this was neat to see. Oh, Geomancer's wind and related attacks work pretty well getting through World 3 dungeons most of the time but boy do I still hate that class because it sure lets you down when you need... anything.

Yeah, Gravity can be good although I kinda wish there was a multi-target version (same with Stop, it's rare to find a good single target where you want to risk it). Speaking of, I got !Time enough this Fiesta I noticed that Slow has a higher hit percentage so it's better than Slowaga on single targets.

Anything interesting?: Summoner is nigh-broken, another really fast World 3. Because I had Chemist I could boost Leviathan at the end (it's not super worth it or anything but at least it's there) and not just knife-boosted Syldras. It's just kinda weird that exists and to remember it. Omega stuff: I got tired of !Spellblade whiffing so I just ended up using !Mixes. Also, I know the Algorithm Guide kinda says otherwise but I swear Resist Fire wears out eventually (ouch!). I'm also about 60% positive I saw a weird glitch involving a (failed) Rocket Punch on a self !Mix out of nowhere but I unfortunately wasn't recording it.

I seem to remember that happening before another year vaguely. I don't remember switching equipment there because it would remove !Spellbladed knives anyway (until I switched to just !Mix). This Fiesta I didn't really do any fancy shield swapping even though I probably should've a few times.

Random screen color (wow, a legit nice one this time!):

Final run! Oh, I did this going through all areas without fleeing (Attack 0 Chicken Knife).

The Good: I've never gotten to use !Zeninage early as I don't run that romhack and boy does it destroy early bosses lol. I struggled a bit on Liquid Flame early but instead of having to do anything funky I found this out one-shoting it for 3-4k damage. !Dance is great of course and on top of the equippable one Thief got it as their default skill (especially nice with Equip Sword). I didn't notice it until Meatcastle but I did have !Steal (yay Genji Helmet?). I had all but the strongest !Spellblades, !Time enough for Hastaga/Slowaga, Float, and stuff, and all of !Summon (hello more Syldra boosts). !Drink was there but not being a default skill means it wasn't really used. Oh, Wonder Rod!

The Bad: Innate !Blue is there on Knight! But it doesn't come with innate Learning, so it's a dead slot. I had !Recover and !Chakra, !Flee even though I never fleed, a bunch of MP/HP bumps, Berserk (no explanation necessary, what am I gonna do put it on a Thief instead of the eventual Equip Sword?)... and Dualcast can be useful but it was Red Mage-quality (Cure was nice after Fire at least).

The Omega:
!Time was just under enough so no Quickleak, also no Thundaga or real healing. So I couldn't really cheese Omega. I really hate !Spellbladeing Omega (it misses soooo much even with knives) and nobody had an innate attack good enough that I could do any !Drink shenanigans without Reflect heals. Knight had good survivability but really that was it, so many wipes to reflected Atomic Fires and the Flamethrower.

What I ended up doing was Reflect Ringing most everyone, Slowing Omega (it's a thing) and Hasteing everyone I could through reflects (especially the Knight), and slowly working on it with Coral Sword !Dances and a little bit of Odin !Summons (until they wiped). I had a Shell on Wonder Rod but unfortunately relying on it reflecting means it missed with a 50% chance. Omega was slow enough that I could save all but the worst Maelstrom results (and I did, many times!) and usually attempt a !Dance twice before Search wore off. Thankfully after 96 out of 99 Elixirs (thank goodness for !Time, Wonder Rod, and !Stealing those White Flames in the Zone Forest) at LVL50 it was a done deal! 2nd hardest Omega this Fiesta.

Notice that my screenshot has a full AP bar? That means Omega actually was finished off from the HP Leak residuals from a reflected Rainbow Wind lol.

Also, if you can stall a boss to buff don't forget that !Drink is a really cheap (in terms of money/grinding time) that'll basically make you OP to anything not a superboss. For a couple grand or so you can be Protected (1/2 damage physical attacks), 2x Max HP, Hasted (if you don't want to grind for shoes), and a higher level (which effects most things including most status effect hit percentages) than what's possible normally. Just ignore Power Drink as it only effects Goblin Punch.
