Last month's recap:
  • The WWE now has a free tier for their Network and no longer offers free months of the paid version.
  • The Street Profits/Viking Raiders games of one-up-manship continued through the month and culminated in... a short match that the Street Profits won clean.
  • WWE Champion Drew McIntyre ended a feud with Bobby Lashley and sidegraded to one with Dolph Ziggler. Raw Women's Champion Asuka ended feuds with Charlotte Flair and Nia Jax (kinda) and upgraded to one with Sasha Banks.
  • The legitimately fired Drake Maverick got a new contract personally handed to him by HHH and wept with joy, in what would have been one of the most disgusting promotional tactics WWE has ever done if they hadn't loving plunged to new depths as the month continued.
  • Best friends Sasha Banks and Bayley won back the Women's Tag Team Titles, and successfully defended them multiple times throughout the month. The two have been an utter highlight of current WWE, one of very few, and one of their segments beat a Chris Jericho segment on AEW which had never lost against a WWE segment before.
  • Adam Cole defeated Velveteen Dream in a bad cinematic match to retain his NXT Championship. Io Shirai defeated Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley to become new NXT Women's Champion. Charlotte then left for surgery and Rhea never got her win back or any kind of revenge for Wrestlemania.
  • Bobby Lashley and Lana appear to have broken up as an onscreen couple maybe? Raw Executive Producer Paul Heyman was shunted out of his position by Bruce Prichard, whose first couple of weeks in charge featured a lot of younger wrestlers getting beaten by much older established talent (there was also a minor ratings increase which has since dropped back down to record lows).
  • WWE engaged in petty Search Engine Optimization marketing to ensure any Google search for "Greatest Wrestling Match Ever" will send back hits for Edge vs. Randy Orton. Ric Flair appears to be back managing Orton.
  • El Hijo del Fantasma became the Interim NXT Cruiserweight Champion and unmasked, renamed himself Santos Escobar, and revealed he was behind the Parking Lot Ninjas who had been kidnapping people (who turned out to be the Parking Lot Ninjas themselves?)
  • Akira Tozawa also had some Parking Lot Ninjas of his own, and a mega-nina, all of whom have apparently disappeared and Tozawa quickly lost back the 24/7 Title he won from R-Truth.
  • NXT had a rare win over AEW in the ratings in the last week of June, with AEW seeing a surprisingly large drop in viewers. NXT's show was main evented by a threeway for the NXT North American Championship and a title shot against Adam Cole.
  • Without fanfare or any build at all, NXT happened to announce they were doing a two week Great American Bash special over the same two weeks that AEW is doing Fyter Fest, which they have been building up for weeks.
  • The Undertaker claims to have finally retired for good, but even then was still saying he would come back if Vince McMahon needed him to.
  • WWE is marketing Extreme Rules as "The Horror Show" which is incredibly tone deaf given world events. They also insist that everybody on-air refers to it in full each time as "Extreme Rules: The Horror Show".
  • The #SpeakingOut movement exposed a depressingly large number of wrestlers from multiple promotions all over the world as creeps and sexpests, but also outright rapists and serial abusers. WWE was not immune, but their reaction has been equally depressing in how weak and pathetic it has been. Velveteen Dream, accused of attempting to groom multiple minors, appears to be on his way out but only due to other long-standing issues that WWE had been hoping to just ignore. Matt Riddle was accused of straight up rape and not only was nothing done, he continues to be actively pushed as a newcomer to the main event on Smackdown. Multiple members of NXT UK were accused of various things, and the result was a couple of suspensions and a declaration that WWE takes this seriously... if there is irrefutable evidence, at which point they will consider what to do. NXT Cruiserweight Champion Jordan Devlin was accused of abuse and is still displayed on WWE's own site as the Cruiserweight Champion, despite WWE having already earlier quietly dropped saying,"Interim" about the Interim Cruiserweight Championship Tournament that Santos Escobar won. The response has been pathetic at best.
  • Somehow, arguably even worse than that, was WWE's continued mishandling of the COVID-19 epidemic. To the surprise of nobody, multiple wrestlers have tested positive for COVID-19. The company initially refused to let any of the wrestlers forced to stand for 10 hours a day wear masks (even WWE merchandise ones!) and then lied and pretended they never said that. They haven't contacted people who have reported testing positive (including Renee Young, who had to get her own home test when her WWE test was negative, or a terrified independent wrestler who has a pregnant wife at home and learned the news of the positive tests via the media). They have only just started to do tests beyond the forehead temperature checks that everybody always knew were a poor method of testing for COVID, and if anybody fails those tests they... just do the tests again hoping they'll pass. Wrestlers have been instructed not to speak to anybody in the media, but also haven't been getting any information from WWE itself. A travel ban put in place by various States to try and prevent the spread of COVID was reacted to by WWE openly announcing they were just gonna fly wrestlers to a different State and have them drive home from there. There isn't enough room to go into the frankly horrifying level of malice and incompetence on display by "The Worldwide Leader in Sports Entertainment" in a simple recap, but to quote Bryan Alvarez (whom the thread title comes from),"Whatever you've heard, it's worse.".

  • Rhea Ripley defeated Robert Stone and Aliyah in a handicap match, submitting both simultaneously.

  • Drake Maverick tried to jump Escobar and got his rear end beat by Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde. Breezango came to Maverick's aid and a six man tag was announced for next week.
  • Mia Yim and Candice LeRae will be in a street fight next week.
  • Cameron Grimes ignored Damian Priest's challenge and instead challenged whoever wins the double-championship match next week between Adam Cole and Keith Lee.
  • NXT Women's Champion Io Shirai defeated Sasha Banks in a non-title match. Bayley interfered on Sasha's behalf, but then Asuka appeared from nowhere and spat green mist in Banks' face. Shirai took out Bayley, moonsaulted onto Banks and got the pinfall victory.

Sasha/Io sounds really good, which should come as no surprise.

Smackdown Results 7/3:
  • Detailed Results here.
  • Accused literal rapist Matt Riddle was interviewed by Michael Cole about why he wrestles barefoot. Baron Corbin confronted Riddle and promised to make his life a living hell, starting with making him wrestle John Morrison.
  • Matt Riddle defeated John Morrison in a singles match. Postmatch, AJ Styles jumped Riddle from behind and was in turn jumped by Drew Gulak.
  • Raw Women's Champion Asuka and Smackdown Women's Champion Bayley will be having a match on Raw.

  • Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross came out to interrupt, resulting in Sasha accepting a match on Bayley's behalf against Alexa Bliss.
  • Bayley defeated Alexa Bliss by DQ after an unprepared Bayley in street clothes dominated Alexa entirely in the match, then got punched by Nikki when Bayley took exception to Nikki attacking Sasha at ringside. Bayley is the heel.
  • A preview of the Swamp Fight between Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman included a look at their history in WWE together..
  • Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Kofi Kingston in a singles match. BIG E and Cesaro were ejected from ringside during the match, but returned postmatch where BIG E saved Kofi from being put through a table.

I think Miz is that rarest of wrestlers who seems like he thrives in the WWE environment. He's not a great wrestler by any means, but he's perfectly serviceable in-ring and has a solid character, and he seems to have done well in parlaying ongoing WWE employment with crafting out a small space for himself in the C-List television host/reality-tv/occasional straight to streaming video release film world.

Showing up sick for the Mania tapings was some dumb rear end protestant work ethic bullshit though.

I started watching Monday Night Raw, starting with 1997 and I plan to watch all of the "attitude era".

1997 is arguably the greatest year in Western Hemisphere wrestling history, just in terms of the quality of the matches and storylines and how hot stuff was even if the ratings didn't quite reflect that. WWF and WCW were doing some really interesting things.

The Attitude Era got super exciting but there was a LOT of godawful stuff in the mix and a bunch of stuff that aged horribly. If you think the women's wrestling in 97 was bad in terms of presentation/sexualization then you've got some pretty bad times coming.

In terms of the stuff you haven't seen cropping up in videos, WWF was in tough times with WCW overtaking them as the dominant American promotion, and they did a ton of international tours (from memory, Bret Hart was a super draw internationally but was outdone domestically by Shawn Michaels?) which may be where some of these video clips you're seeing are coming from. Come 99 onwards you'll have Smackdown happening too and for a long time it was just assumed any viewer was watching both shows and so storylines got resolved/continued in both shows frequently.

  • Bayley was surprised but quickly back onboard when Sasha Banks agreed to the Kabuki Warriors' challenge.
  • Raw Women's Champion Asuka defeated Smackdown Women's Champion Bayley in a non-title Champion vs. Champion match. This was the main event of the evening, and ran over 20 minutes.

I recall a time when Braun was a hot property in WWE and a fan favourite here in the SA wrestling forum, with people going all caps BRAUN when writing about him. When and why did that change into Braun being a figure of contempt?

There were a lot of reasons, one was that they kept booking him in title matches they didn't want him to win, so the big unstoppable monster character started to look a little silly when he kept getting beaten relatively easily and cleanly by actual top guys. Another was that the writing did him no favors by making him a huge jerk for often no reason (or wildly overreacting even when he had a reason) despite being a face - the booking of him vs. Kevin Owens in particular was REALLY bad for this. Another element is that he appears to be one of the guys who drank the flavor-aid when it comes to the WWE cult.

It's kind of like a more sped-up version of Dolph Ziggler, where at first most people liked him and were keen to see what they did next, but as time progressed and the act never changed it got stale real fast.
