i am convinced that the best way to create an anime (or any story really) is to drop a poo poo ton of nouns written down on paper in a hat, pick two from it, and create a premise based on the bizarre combination

I think the best way to create a story is to think of an interesting theme, or world, or character, or conflict, and build the other aspects around that concept as a base.

i don't have a good imagination, so i need all the help i can get

Oh there's nothing wrong with doing the hat trick for inspiration or an idea, but there's a famous quote that goes as follows:

"Good artists borrow, great artists steal."

What this means is that a great arist will build off of what came before them, take ideas and inspiration from other works, and retool and rework them for their own purposes. And it makes sense—in order to become a great artist, you copy techniques developed over the centuries by prior artists. To become a great writer, you read literature and learn about various writing styles, themes, story ideas, and archetypes. Musicians and singers will look towards other's works for inspiration in how to craft a cool sound or how to evoke certain emotions in response to the way the lyrics are sung.

Basically what I'm saying is that a story doesn't have to be whole cloth original-it can wear its influences on its sleeves, and you can synthesize multiple ideas together to come up with more unique ideas that look at things either from a different angle, or that are played entirely straight. It is often the minute differences that will set your story apart from its contemporaries in meaningful ways. Studying various media and practicing writing gives you a better grasp of which ideas are compelling, unique, meaningful, or otherwise evocative.

Is the anime adaption of golden kamuy pretty good? The manga sucked me in and I'm curious to see it animated.

It's decent, and most people who only watch the anime like it, but I definitely prefer the manga just because the art is so good.

A lot of Japanese anime is dubbed too. :pram:

But to be serious, usually the Japanese performances are better than the English ones in my experience, but there are plenty of english performances that rival or surpass the Japanese performer. Chris Patton's performance as Satou in the dub of Welcome to the NHK sells the character way more than his Japanese VA, Yutaka Soizumi, does. Sometimes the Dub will add to the experience by adding to a much more dry script and dialogue, which allows for better characterization of the cast-a good example of this is Yu Yu Hakusho, where I think the dub is just straight up better than the sub for both the performances and how the dialogue helps characterize the cast. Similarly, although I prefer the subs to Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, a lot of people prefer the dub because of the increased vulgarity of the characters dialogue, which matches the aesthetic of the show.

For me, DR2's main flaw is the most interesting writing bits are back loaded in the last 3 chapters. Chapter 1 has some interesting twists, but 2 and 3 didn't do too much for me.

Pokemon gen 4 remakes confirmed. It has a chibi artstyle and seems to stick to the grid layout of the original gen 4. Also some sort of open world action rpg called Pokemon Legends Arceus, which has the gen 4 PCs rocking ninja costumes.

Personally I'd definitely recommend Omega Ruby over the original if you can get it.

I agree with over the original ruby/sapphire. But it might be worth considering replaying emerald at least once if you never gave it a chance.

Emerald's story combined both the team magma and aqua plotlines, and it added a ton of new features, especially postgame with the battle frontier, many of which were removed from the ORAS games.

Are there reliable ways to find out of print titles without going to :files: or is it generally a crapshoot? I'm feeling nostalgic for 90s schlock titles while I'm trying to figure out what drew me to them in the first place. I've got it in my mind that my interest stems from the fact that a lot of these stories are the same as you can find elsewhere but only in written form. Giving a voice and an image to a story that otherwise might not have one goes a long way to enhancing what might just be routine.

http://because.moe/ will help you figure out if any particular shows are available on a streaming service. Hidive has a lot of classic OVAs, so it might be worth browsing their catalog. But often times torrents will be your best bet for out of print shows.
