They should keep Moreno cause he's actually a catcher. Kirk isn't very good at the catching part.

On the other hand Kirk has actually shown he can hit at an elite level for an MLB catcher.

Gerblederp posted:

You would think they’d move one of them. I dunno if they’d do anything with Jansen.

I figure it's more value efficient or whatever to keep Jansen as a backup and move one of Moreno or Kirk rather than consign Moreno to being a rookie backup to Kirk.

I truly don't understand Berrios' season. Like I mentioned before, you never know what to expect. Sure, his season numbers are awful, but seems to either have a great or terrible game. No in-between. I wish I knew more about how to pitch to understand why this has been a trend.

I saw some slo-mo video and apparently he changed his delivery again. Hopefully it stays working this time.

Darude - Adam Sandstorm posted:

His fastball isn't a great pitch but sets up everything else with sequencing. When he can't locate it where he needs to he gets shelled and when he can he's fine.

From what I've read he can locate his fastball just fine it just sucks rear end for mysterious reasons (release point too low so it's too flat?) so he never throws it over the plate.

Angels fans: is there any reason to think the Angels might do anything to push back any Ohtani starts? The Angels are coming through Toronto and I am trying to time up if Ohtani is pitching (looks like it'd be Friday, I think).

This is a neat video, thanks for sharing. It sounds like there's a twofold problem, one a baseline with the Jays overshifting (and this seeming to skew the babip of everyone) and one specific to Gausman. For the Gausman specific stuff, I wonder if there's something specific where he's tipping his breaking stuff and so batters are getting their bats on them for flares, or if it really is just pure bad luck. A 372 BABIP is wild.

It doesn't seem wild to me to say that the Yankees' play is particularly frustrating in light of the expectation that they should be better. After all, the Dodgers have given us an example of just how good an equivalently-resourced team can be.

Still might hold off on the "lovely franchises that never win anything" bit.

So I apologize for bringing up the Astros' sign stealing again but:

As you may have heard, there's a major cheating scandal going on in chess right now. Part of this is that a young player, Hans Moke Niemann, has been repeatedly banned from one of the major online chess sites chess.com. In an interview, Danny Rensch for chess.com talked a bit about how they algorithmically look for cheating, and revealed that they actually consulted with MLB on the Astros case:

Great for the Jays to get a split with the Rays, especially after how feel-bad the first two games were. Now they just have to survive a three game series with the Yankees, after which they have the BoSox and hopefully-by-the-eliminated Orioles to set their rotation.

May need more than 3, but at least Berrios can spin the wheel and he may get one of his good starts.

I guess there's also the added variable of playing for home field in the first round, since that could mean the Jays are pitching e.g. Gausman against the Orioles at the end instead of setting up 1-2-3 for the Wild Card series. And, thinking about it, a serious playoff run probably involves at least one game of Mitch White, Yusei Kikuchi, and a lot of prayer.
