I own a 32" tv. It's connected to my computer. Checkmate nerds. Also, gently caress Ray Rice, I watch NFL because I think it's fun, and I haven't been to a game in 15ish years, so I'm not contributing to the problem at any rate. But I am a Lions fan, and we're not known for being big on showing up every game when we are bad, which is usually.

Ya'll support a lot worse poo poo by buying sweatshop/child labor clothing and eletronics then you do by watching football. Every time you put gas in your car you are supporting some of the worst human rights abusing regimes on the planet. Get over yourselves.

I like how in the game the CBS announcer said this was the biggest scandal in the NFL he could remember. I guess Hernandez killing two guys for spilling a drink on him then covering it up by executing his wives sister boyfriend is less worse then punching a woman.

That doesn't necessarily mean that. Yes the Hernandez thing is the worst crime a NFL player committed but as far as a scandal within the organization this is greater when you have executives lying to the public / police. Hernandez's stuff happened outside if the league. Though I would argue the NFL's history with concussions is a worse scandal.

I guess Hernandez killing two guys for spilling a drink on him then covering it up by executing his wives sister boyfriend is less worse then punching a woman. But that didn't involve the NFL. The reason this is an NFL scandal is because apparently Goodell either saw the full video, or at least knew Rice had hit his fiancée and cared so little about her that he gave Rice a two game suspension. Now he's trying to backtrack and he's getting caught in lies. Cover ups are never a good idea because with the NFL as big as they are, someone is going to rat them out.

This has reached critical mass, it's not to the point where it'll just blow over.

You know, if it's true that Ray Rice told the Commish the whole truth and the Commish lied about it just to cover his rear end, I think the NFLPA has a real good case for fighting on Rice's behalf over double jeapordy (even they'd be loathe to do it).

http://deadspin.com/the-nfl-finally-explains-why-it-suspended-ray-rice-inde-1634008557 Jane McManus ✔ @janesports NFL has informed Ray Rice that it increased suspension because video showed "starkly different" sequence of events than Rice's version. PS Ravens executives said that Rice's description of the assault exactly matched the video.

Considering how things are going, I expect that will happen at some point. I also expect the NFLPA to sit on it for long enough (the league still hasn't informed them, so they won't take action until that occurs) to actually prevent Rice from playing, so the fight just becomes about his salary, which at least keeps him off the field.

Here's what I think the worst possible outcome for Goodell to be: Goodell saw the recording in Private, gave Rice a chance to own up to it, Rice lied about what happened, but he gave him a 2 game suspension anyway and we can all prove this.

armoredgorilla posted:http://deadspin.com/the-nfl-finally-explains-why-it-suspended-ray-rice-inde-1634008557 Haha. How do they not expect this to blow up in their face? When the NFLPA challenges this, and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they have an obligation to, then the league is going to have to provide evidence that Rice lied. I can't imagine that a meeting like that wasn't recorded somehow. There just doesn't seem to be any possible way for this to not backfire.

I'm trying to imagine how all this would have played out if after the leak NFL would have just said "Yeah, saw it - gave two games. Afterwards we understood that we were too lenient, and that's why we have the new policy". I'm guessing this would have died down already. There's only so many ways talking heads can say how disgusted they are, and how Goodell really screwed up. Now there are new stories every day for god knows how long.
