This whole thing has really damaged my excitement for NFL football. To the point where I'm not even excited about the Cardinals game today.

I think this is the beginning of the end of me being a 'fan' of the NFL. I don't mean to sound sanctimonious, I'm not going to tell other people they're bad for watching the NFL or anything like that. I'm sure I'll still watch NFL games here and there, but I don't have the drive for it to be appointment viewing like it was before all this.

I know domestic violence isn't a problem endemic to the league and it's more a problem with society as a whole but in order to...'change things', even internally in regards to better empathizing and understanding the problem, there has to be a starting point. I think this is mine.

Rice has good standing to win his appeal

Of course the NFL has a precedent, Josh Gordon, of taking over 3 months to even hear an appeal, so he could be out til December anyway but that's my bitterness over the union not speaking up about that massive delay

Besides, even if Rice wins this, no team would be willing to take the publicity damage of having him, so it's surprising he's bothering.

Until I see owners coming out demanding Goodell step down, they're just as complicit. Society is too full of no comment ninnies even when it's as black and white as this. If it's going to be a sport of men, I want to see some of them act like men for once. I mean, Dan Snyder supporting Goodell, that's expected; he's a horrible human being with the redeeming qualities of a festering cancer, but I really hope this week we get a strong consistent voice and less of this namby pamby wagon circling.

There's a less than zero chance that a team is going to have an injury at RB, and see the available free agents and think "gently caress it" and sign him. The Seahawks signed TO in one of his last NFL years despite his baggage (admittedly less than Rice's) to give him a chance and Vick found a job too.

This of course hinges on Rice winning his appeal.

This is kind of a different beast though, all the owners are realizing what a threat this story is to their extremely profitable brand and their opinion will overrule some GM with a need at RB. The Vick story barely got traction in the mainstream media compared to this shitshow.

The NFL suspended him for the infraction already, and increased the suspension after seeing a video of the thing he was already suspended for.

Lying to the NFL, which it sounds like he didn't even do, is not really grounds for extending the suspension.

This x1000.

The idea that the commissioner of the NFL should break out the moral abacus, compare the relative immorality of killing X dogs vs. punching your fiancee vs. screaming racist poo poo vs. getting in a drunken brawl outside a strip club vs. cheating on your taxes vs. almost certainly raping somebody vs. driving a car while high/drunk/texting vs. shooting a gun in a night club but not actually hitting anybody vs. all the other immoral poo poo people can do, and then mete out the appropriate penalty is pants-on-head retarded. Most of the outrage is about Goodell getting the math wrong in this case (and he did, and then lied about it). But even if the commissioner tried to do their best, it's an impossible task -- we spend trillions of dollars (and tons of political effort) on a justice system to do these things, and that barely works. But the commissioner won't. At the very least, they'll be extremely biased because the commissioner of the NFL is by definition a person who was hand-picked by a bunch of ancient, ultra-wealthy white guys to represent their interests. Moral opprobrium should be handed out by the courts (and the people Rice interacts with for the rest of his life). It would be glorious to see Goodell, who desperately wanted to become America's Moral Compass (apparently to protect all that is right and good against marihuana and black men who speak loudly or dance in public), brought down by his hubris. But I'm getting less and less hopeful that we'll see this.

Now, there are legitimate "damage to the brand" concerns aside from the "punish the wicked" stuff. But those should be handled by the individual teams rather than the league (which has monopoly power over every reasonably comparable employment opportunity, unlike most other private employers).

I was on the "OFF WITH GODELL'S HEAD" train till I read your post. I see your point about the fact that if the justice system worked right the 1st time and didn't let him buy his way into probation/community service, the decision wouldn't have been left at Goodell's feet like that. Why isn't the media going after this no name piece of poo poo DA/prosecutor/judge who didn't do his job in the 1st place?

At the same time though, that old footage of him dragging her out of the elevator so damning, and for Goodell to think she slipped in a scuffle and hit her head herself is retarded. It's a casino, there's cameras everywhere, how did they not think a tape would surface? Or how the gently caress did the DA not see the tape the 1st time and charge him appropriately?

All in all, as much as I want to blame Goodell for not doing anything, how the gently caress did the DA not step up and do his job and prosecute him? It would have taken the decision out of Goodell's hands. It seems like he was just following suit from a legal stand point.

It isn't the state's job to pay a man millions of dollars and burnish his public image via the organs of a multi-billion dollar industry and its public relations programs. The state is only asked to prosecute a first-time offender in a case that involved a spouse uninterested in pressing charges.

Goodell is in the position to pay and publicize such a man, and did when he chose to defend him and even ensure he was paid the most possible dollars under his initial punishment, because he doesn't really care that a man beat a woman unconscious.

I'm not sure about the league office but Ozzie Newsome is on record saying that Ray Rice never lied to the Ravens. Hard to imagine he would be honest with the team and then go fibbing to Goodell. Rice is dumb but even he would have to figure that Rodger and Ravens occasionally talk.
