Welcome to the hellish month known as August, also known as the month STR was born (which is why STR sniped the August thread). Much of this OP is shamelessly stolen from CAT INTERCEPTOR's OP for the July thread.

Ready? Here we go.

This is a chat thread for anyone who reads AI. We talk about computers, life, how much alcohol we drink, how much we spend on alcohol, how much we hate our lives, how little we get laid, take bets on how long it will take Ricco to relapse and fail a pee test at his not-so-new-anymore job, where it's finally getting hotter than the asscrack of Satan in the USA and colder than Elsa's lady parts in Australia, STR amuses us with delivery driver stories, Mad Max fan fiction and shipping Furiosa and one of the Wives, LITERALLY A FISH occasionally slam truth bombs while CAT INTERCEPTOR infects our minds and sends us all to the cycle asylum - leading an army of AI cyclists to slaughter hipsters on fixies, some of us try to avoid gun chat, wonder how the gently caress Chris Evans hasnt been reprogrammed with a baseball bat, we post cat pics, dog pics, whatever, just no penis pics (PM those to STR or CSB instead). Just imagine this as one large garage with a keg of lovely flat beer, and we're all pretending to work on some broken rear end 80s Dodge while talking poo poo about anything that comes up. Anyone who is just wandering by, stop and say hello! Most of us don't bite, and we're a pretty chilled out bunch of normal people. Except apparently when [list of topics you already know to avoid] comes up. anyway.

aw yeah check out that sweet-rear end setting - pull up a barrel and lets talk some poo poo!

ASMITH ACTUALLY HAS A FALCON, LETS GO TO HIS PALCE AND SINK HIS PISS - http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3767188

I stole half of that paragraph from CAT INTERCEPTOR and LITERALLY A FISH..... and the January chat thread and I am not ashamed IN THE SLIGHTEST

Is Literally a Fish literally a fish? NEAI will be able to answer that for us shortly, and will even have a van for him! Said van may or may not ever move under its own power again, but we'll Ford that river when we come to it

Is kastein a human, or just a computer full of every possible combination of Jeep parts?

Will Pham Nuwen's 280ZX ever shift into reverse? Let's find out!

Follow the thrilling saga of (attempting to) Megasquirting a turbo VAG 5 cylinder, by CommieGIR! And other associated earlier Audi shenanigans, of course.

CSB has not one, but TWO projects for us! Shithouse vs Larger Shithouse

Is 13 inch slowly becoming more insane? Are we driving vehicles that haven't moved under their own power in decades halfway across the country with little more than basic tools and an old Camaro as a chase vehicle? Or will the chase vehicle wind up being an engine donor? Only time (and this here link) will tell!

If you don't like chatting, how about reading? Someone suggest a book, I don't read much, but I'll edit it into the post.

----

Did I mention we all have way too many cats?

Meet STR's Cat, The Dude Lebowski:

----

Rosie has found a 13 inch:

----

Below cattes belong to CAT INTERCEPTOR:

Maddie

Maddie, being a young mum bringing up a family of kittens is conservative and wants safety first for her runs for food. She is careful and wants to arrive so she understeers – she lacks front grip but thats okay that keeps her speed down. Her front paws wash out on tight corners so she reacts naturally and backs off, weight shifting to the front paws and hence more grip and tightening the line. Misses the apex but hey, she still took the corner. Rear paws dont do a lot of work

Rally Ed

Ed is light, fast, highly maneuverable and clearly has about as much oversteer as a Mk II Rothmans Escort

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_iBsFxn08Y

A lack of rear grip is his problem, not having big enough paws for the amount of power he wants to put down. The front has good initial bite and he handbrakes like a champion. Much like Ari Vatenen, the speeds he tries to carry does get him unstuck and frequent crashes occur. However he is very throttle sensitive and reacts well to sudden changes of direction.

Gelignite Jack

A most curious puzzle I thought observing. He had a very different set of handling characteristics reminisent of Maddie, is a younger but quite a deal bit larger kitten than Ed, but suffers none of the understeer issues, as well as holding a far higher cornering speed and ability to accelerate. So as I was studying his handling while he was pulling max g in the kitchen that he reminded me of…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7qp3srbsps

Even sounds like one too.

And in all sadness that’s how I worked out a handling issue on the WRX and came to the conclusion I had a blown strut. Since then I’ve also worked out that cat handling is indeed completely relevant to cars – and set up a mini skid pan in the kitchen to see how each cat reacts to a slippery surface. 1/3rd of a cup of water over the entraceway, a note pad and a few neat treats for cats to come running to. And indeed, Ed screams in at 10,000 rpm and slides out like a mad drifter, Maddie is relaxed and has a mild slide, while GJ keeps it flat and does a long AWD drift with the weight shift noticeable as he adjusts traction front to rear.

I’ve also been able to work out how to make the turn tighter so I can experiment with different setups, like if GJ has more castor.

Sadly no pictures as I really didnt expect this to work.

But then again this is Cat Handling by Stig

I thought I didn't like the new Corolla that much, but when we turned it in at ICT for the local rental, I got a Cruze, and liked that even less. Horrible ergonomics.

I haven't lived in Denton in a few years. :sigh: Currently in south Garland, basically off of I-30 and the eastern end of the Bush turnpike (if you look at a map of I-30, I'm a mile west of Lake Ray Hubbard). I miss Denton a lot, but it's too far from work. There's not really much in Denton unless you like live music and arts though, it's very much a college town (2 public universities there).

The PSU and RAM are the only things I think need any attention in this PC.

It's a 5 year old i5-2500k system. Still runs everything I use perfectly fine. The only reason I think the PSU needs attention: it's a Corsair builder series (CX500), which is supposedly low quality, and I may be pushing it pretty hard with 4 internal drives. Dropping in a SSD made this thing feel like a new system.

RAM... I downgraded it to 8GB in order to bump my mom's PC up a bit. I'd like to bring it back to 16GB.

The CX series is a budget line. I would definitely replace your PSU when you get a chance. 5 years is usually around when my PSUs start to poo poo the bed. Unfortunately, the better ones around $100 but you can always use them in your next computer.

RAM, however, is cheap these days. 8 GB of DDR3 should be about $30.

I have 4 x 2GB sticks, with 4 slots on my mobo, so I have to buy 16 GB. :v: I had 2 x 4GB sticks, but mom was bitching about her PC always being sluggish (and her PC only has 2 slots). Had this laying around, so threw it into mine. But yeah, RAM is crazy cheap again.

Haven't had any issues with the PSU, but I know it's a low end model. I only intended to use it for like 3 months, which turned into 6 months, which turned into a year, and uh.. here we are 5 years later. :haw: It's outlasted my last 3 Antecs combined though (TruePower, EcoPower, etc).

I'm still trying to find a way to justify upgrading my system to something newer, but even the current generation i5 stuff doesn't seem like it offers a whole lot in performance over this (for desktop usage anyway). Definitely better in power efficiency though.

Goddamn, this whole insurance and body shop thing has been frustrating as hell.

Other person's insurance has refused to talk to me beyond "we just got your claim from the answering service, don't call us, we'll call you".

My insurance finally got a "we've decided your client is at fault" out of them on Friday. Except they never talked to me to ask what happened. My insurance has already told me that this won't be a chargeable claim and they feel I wasn't at fault, but it may take a long time to get my deductible back (if ever).

The body shop I had originally selected doesn't respond to voicemails, and emails are either responded to at least a few days later (if I ever get a reply), or with a terse "That person doesn't work here anymore, what did you want?". So now I'm trying to find an in-network body shop that isn't booked solid for the next couple of months.

Every Asus board I've owned has died way sooner than they should have. The most amusing was a brand new, fresh out of the box Asus that smoked the power supply (which worked fine an hour before, it was out of my old build) and itself as soon as I hit the power button. I've had pretty bad luck with MSI boards too, except for the one in my mother's PC.

I've had really bad luck with Antec power supplies too, even their high end ones. But for a long time they were the go-to brand.

Meanwhile the Gigabyte board I have now has been trucking along fine for 5.5 years with a pretty hefty overclock and a low end (but still name brand) power supply. :iiam: It's starting to have an occasional cold boot issue - blank screen, no POST - but that only hits if it's been off for a day or two. I'll use almost nothing this week compared to last week, since we haven't even gotten out of the 80s this week. Thank gently caress the hottest part of the year is almost behind us here.

The AC works decent, except when it's above ~102 or so outside. Once it breaks that, the inside starts getting warmer - the day we hit 107, it was about 80 inside for most of the day.

Guys, I hosed up good.

I delivered a package to the right apartment, but in the wrong apartment complex. And Amazon's customer service gave the customer my cellphone #. :sigh: At least I use a separate phone for work, so I can just turn it off outside of work. I brought it in with me to dinner so I could do my shift bid, I was a bit surprised when it rang.

Got a hell of an rear end chewing from the customer while I was in a restaurant eating dinner. I would have preferred to be contacted over it tonight for sure; I was able to go collect the packages and take them to the right location (in my defense, both Amazon's navigation and Google Maps show the wrong location, and there's no visible street address on either property). But picking up my phone and being cussed out and yelled at kinda sucked.

Not posting in the craigslist thread because it's not a craigslist ad & it's from a dealer... but does this seem too out of line?

Weird. There's a Reliable Chevrolet here too; they replaced the fuel pump on my car and got GM to cover it. They also did the ignition switch recall on my car.

Wonder if they're related? I was really happy with their service department. Sales wasn't pushy either.

Can't say anything one way or the other about the price.

Ranger's great except for a loud high pitched whine that seems to originate from the fuel pump. Might go for it any way if I can get a deal, sitting at dealer now

Someone put a cheap fuel pump in it. Ignore it until it dies unless it gets annoying, at that point drop in an OEM fuel pump.

it's a 96 hyundai elantra stickshift, the guy has taken METICULOUS care of it - replacing parts ahead of expected life, all oil changes with synthetic, OEM parts only (he experimented with equivalent brand wheel bearings, but replaced them with OEM a few days later because he 'didn't like the sound'), the whole nine yards. The only problems it has are that the exhaust needs a weld and a tire's flat, whoopty poo poo. It is five hundred dollars, because the guy thought 'actually i take the bus to work anymore, so paying for car insurance is for suckers' and just doesn't really need a lot of money out of it. Plus, nobody around here drives stick (DC) so that's the ONLY REASON it wasn't snapped up four seconds after the ad was posted.

This will be me selling my car at some point. It's had nothing but synthetic oil since I've owned it, and the few parts I've had to throw at it have all been OEM (except for the serpentine belt and thermostat).

I know I won't get poo poo for it, it's a 10 year old Saturn (11 if you go by build date), but I figure if the OEM parts took it this far, when I replace them, they'll probably outlast the car. I don't like having to do the same job twice.

Yeah.

I fully expect to catch some heat over it, but seeing as their own navigation sent me to the wrong place I don't think I should catch 100% of the blame. :smith: Hopefully I keep my job, they let people go over the smallest poo poo.

In other poo poo. My phone pissed me off again. It's gotten to where people always say I'm breaking up. It also locks up a lot, and drops calls, drops data,, and barely shows a signal when other people around me on the same carrier have a strong signal. I finally threw my hands in the air and bought a new one. Since I bought that phone used, I don't have a warranty on it.

Goodbye Moto X. Hello Nexus 6P (and hello using my Amazon credit card.. ugh... hopefully I'll get it paid off in a month or two). My 2014 Moto X was and is a great phone - but it's on a $30/mo 100 minute/5GB plan for work only. My 2015 Moto X that I've been trying to limp along is a pile of poo poo that I'm going to enjoy curbstomping.
