Fig makes it way easier to manage tiers and add-ons. Much better than Kickstarter on this point.

rope kid posted:People who give a poo poo about A/D&D edition wars probably don't care much about classless games like Ars, Burning Wheel, etc. I have zero experience with classless systems, but does that mean there are no "roles" in those systems? I've always hated the power discrepancy in D&D classes, but I honestly enjoy filling a role as part of a group dynamic. I mean, that's just me and obviously nobody needs to give a poo poo about that, but I like the teamwork aspect of it, and working around inherit weaknesses that a class system brings. "Everybody can do everything" doesn't sound fun to me, versus "I can do this one thing really well, and together with my friends, we can be Big drat Heroes." Mind you, I have no idea if "Everybody can do everything" is true, and likely isn't. My point is just that class systems (ideally) enforce weaknesses as well as strengths, which makes group player interesting imo.

Technical objection to today's video: I'm not sure the Defiant qualifies as a sloop. A sloop doesn't have a poop deck. I think it looks more like a caravel.

Gonna name my ship the Delphinus. Then I just need to go back to the White March to get a hunk of Ionni Brathr to make a cannon with. Some sort of...moonstone cannon if you will. *stares pointedly at Ropekid*

Though I wouldn't say this about most of the systems in Ars Magica, the triangular Arts progression and spontaneous casting systems make generalist magi feel great, IME.

yeah, while there were some sloops with quarterdecks I'm not entirely sure how common they were. One of Cook's ships had one put on but then it was too topheavy so it got taken off. Sloop is definitely the most fun type of boat to say but looking at the pic I'm wondering if corvette might not be more apt? I'd have to look into it more on a computer instead of my phone.

Also, there might just be different ship categorisations in Eora. A brig sloop would have two masts. This seems like either a sloop with an unusually high poop deck or a caravel with only one mast. Overall a caravel seems more time-period appropriate since most of the rest of the game seems to be around 1600 and going full age-of-sail sloop would push the game a couple centuries later.

rope kid posted:I'm sure any number of people, including moderately ambitious DMs reading this right now, could make a 3.5/Pathfinder/5E game set in Eora that would be totally fitting and appropriate. Ditch sorcerers and warlocks, use psionic warriors as a core class. Replace gnomes and halflings with orlans, orcs with aumaua, genasi with godlike. You're more than halfway there. No one needs me or anyone else at Obsidian to design what are effectively house rules. I'm a little surprised you're doing a new rule set instead of just a setting splatbook for Pathfinder or D20 rules or whatever.

They've got boats, cannons and krakens, sure, but there's still a definite medieval theme and they've talked quite a bit about importing elements from other historical pirate regions and cultures. It might not be as easy to toss out an article like "Yo Ho Ho And A Bottle Of Healing Poition! Obsidian Takes To The High Seas For Their Next Arrr-PG!"

They've stated many times now that PoE is solidly Age of Exploration/Early Modern era, not medieval. That's reflected in PoE1 I don't know why you'd think it'd change in a game Ropekid has said will be more overtly dealing with themes of colonialism. Dyrwood is a colonial nation.

AriadneThread posted:jesus it jumped from like, 3.2 mil to 3.4 in minutes. i just absolutely do not understand how the fig fund thing works If they've hit max investment (2.25 million) and they're trickling it out (which is what it looks like they're doing), that's another 500,000 in investments, which makes 4 million pretty certain, which means PoE II is likely to surpass the PoE kickstarter. Skeptical we'll hit 5 million... but less skeptical then I was when the update went up. EDIT: As to how it 'works', it sounds like people say they want to Invest and then the investment is put 'on hold' and added into the total amount raised at the pleasure of fig.co. So it looks like they're trickling out 'approving' the investments at a rate that roughly matches the fig pledges. Which makes sense, because if they dropped 2,000,000 in investments on day one, and double funded just from that, it would probably make a lot less people pledge. It would also change the narrative from being 'fan funded' to being 'investor funded'. Fintilgin fucked around with this message at 01:10 on Feb 23, 2017 |
