Also, I wonder if the investigation is going to have much of a public mindshare if it lasts for 2 1/2 more years.

In the old cops in the beat thread there a dedicated crew of supposedly liberal people coming in to tell us how Unfortunate it was another unarmed person was gunned down by a cop who then got off totally clean and that's bad but there really isn't a better way because of such and such legal rule. The only solution left might just be to put a party hardliner dummy in SotH, then impeach trump and pence because, if they don't, they risk even the safest of safe seats being in danger as the wave grows and more people are emboldened and embiggened. Of course this is all long term thinking, at this point in time you're right, and no one has really shown a knack for long term thinking. republicans especially.

However you can't look at the modern Republican party and see people that are willing to stand up to their insane base to do what's right for the country, especially when the right wing media has been selling this entire investigation as a witch hunt led by a secret cabal of traitors. If the investigation results cause Trump's numbers to crater THEN the party might stand up to him but as long as he is popular with Republican voters they will not act.
