I believe it was quite literally assumed at the time that any women working in gaming in the 1990s were just girlfriends or wives of the game designers, so that was the "input so utterly marginalized due to their sex that they were ignored" phase. Though I also have no doubt the hatred was brewing as more women actually became visible

There were a couple exceptions like Roberta Williams and Jane Jensen, who were hated for different, far more valid reasons.

I mean the ad didn't say "Stevie Case is about to make you her bitch" so that might have been part of why it was more directed towards Romero.

From what I remember Stevie Case was pretty much the least of things people complained about regarding Daikatana.

I definitely remember bile directed at Stevie Case. Mostly people saying how she only had a job because just Romero's girlfriend. But yeah, Romero was so front and center 90% of the attention and mockery went to him.

Reading that troglodyte website linked by Scratch Monkey it seems to be mostly tied to the fact that she had a successful career with multiple homes? There's whining that she's learning Spanish for living in Texas, slams on her creativity for reusing the "Heir" pun on multiple King's Quest game titles, deliberately invoking Charles Bukowski's style (which was trendy af in the late 90s/early 00s) to try and justify the invective... it all would read as satire if not for the fact that it all seems way too laser-focused and ends with a rattling of vintage porn magazines which is clearly a reference to something I'm not getting.

While this is a very nice fantasy you've concocted, the actual story is this: Roberta Williams was a head writer/producer at Sierra and worked on their point and click adventure games, which are still remembered for being full of absolute bullshit puzzles that required you to phone their paid help line to solve. Watch the Retsupurae video about King's Quest 5 to see exactly the sort of bullshit I'm talking about it.

Jane Jensen also worked for Sierra and created perhaps the most bullshit adventure game puzzle ever, where you had to steal some dude's ID card and make yourself a fake mustache using stolen maple syrup packets and hair torn from the back of a cat, despite the person you're impersonating NOT HAVING A MUSTACHE.

Writing something like that is a justified reason to hate someone.

Yes but every adventure game made before about 2010 was an absolute piece of poo poo designed to make you hate playing adventure games, with the exception of our Lord and Savior Ron Gilbert's Holy Monkey Island. Focusing on the women being bad is, well, you can guess.

You know a cool adventure game would be where you go to a website and push reload a lot and it shows you pictures from another decade and you post them in a thread so a bunch of goons can go off on a tangent when you share something questionable

The Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned cat mustache puzzle is absolutely amazing and I won't tolerate a word against it. It is a true piece of art, the influence of which stays with us all even now, years after we left the game behind and forgotten the game's actual Jesus-was-intentionally-bred-by-a-secret-society-that-was-trying-to-make-a-living-god-but-then-got-usurped-by-vampires-who-want-to-drink-Jesus plot.

The lucasarts adventure games are all great but 100% on the writing and art. The gameplay is still complete bullshit try every item in you inventory on every clickable object until progress and repeat. I don't think any of them besides Fate of Atlantis have a single puzzle that you can "solve" by applying a logical progress.

if you want to gaze further into the abomination, many gamers at the time felt the comic's content was justified, claiming that the marketing campaign for assassin's creed shamelessly, continuously took advantage of jade raymond's 'marginal sex appeal' as a PR stunt to drive up sales

while i don't doubt that the gaming industry would've been hell on women working in it a decade or so ago, and it's perfectly conceivable that ubisoft did in fact do her a disservice by capitalizing on her appearance for advertisements under terms that we would probably consider exploitative today, i don't think a comic that furthers that exploitation is the best vehicle for this criticism ...and that's a generous assumption, it's definitely more likely gamers felt affronted by being baldly patronized and blamed jade raymond directly

I remember that whole shitshow well and the only extent to which they 'continuously took advantage' of her femininity was that she did a couple of talking head interviews because she was one of the key people involved in making the game, and was clearly good at talking to camera/press, which a lot of people in game development are not bc they're too awkward. it was literally just because she's a photogenic woman in games development who had the media training required to do public facing interviews that idiot gamers decided this was some kind of sexual gambit on the part of ubisoft.

edit: but obviously the reason the video game community behaved and continues to behave like this is the product of decades upon decades of big publishers marketing games as being exclusively for horny dudes, so yeah
